I didn't say Caufield was a 'safe' player, he just more 'safe' than Kaliyev...it's like a heard of folks running away from a bear and the last 2 guys are a 12yr old and a fat guy, the 12yr old is just slightly faster than the fat guy, which makes him the 'safer' pick not to get eatin'

Doesn't mean Caufield is safe, because if you replace the bear with a pack of wolves, the 12yr old and fat guy are both goners.

I didn’t mean you were crazy. I appreciate your input. I was just saying it’s crazy how much the league has changed.

Don't believe this team has the players or the system that Kaliyev will require to be successful so id pick Caufield of the 2, that said i wouldnt pick either in the area we are drafting, better options available like trading down unless we get a chance at a player like Turcotte, Krebs or Dach. If Zona is sitting around 13-16 id rather trade down to 20-24 get some extra picks in the first 3 rounds and see who's fallen and is available. This team also better stop wasting second round picks on defensive D too.
Also the Coach has more to do with lack of scoring than it does the players, the offensive systems and line combinations Toccett uses are brutal to say the least, He is not a good coach in my opinion.

Caufield.

DeBrincat scored his 40th last night.
Just double-checked DeBrincat’s combine measurements; 5’7 164lbs.

For some reason, I remembered him being beefier. Caufield is going Wisco. Wisco has an elite strength and conditioning program. Caufield will definitely come out of that school with the ideal physical make-up for his frame. I’ve got no doubt about that.

If we draft Caufield I will be the happiest kid at the dance. Given our likely draft position, I think he would be a steal.

All in on Caufield. Could be our catcher in the rye.

Krebs continues to drop in lists but I'm not convinced he will drop that far on draft day. If he is around 12-14 and we are 15-17 I would look to swap picks to nab him too.

My concern with Kaliyev is I’m not sure he’s coachable in the sense he doesn’t currently know how to play his position and roams all over the place in the offensive zone. He’s got talent but his bust percentage is high. He’s the home run awing though.

Agreed, which is why for this organization if we were to select between the 2, the pick would have to be Caufield.

Out of the 3 I go:
1. Caufield
2. Krebs
3. Kaliyev

With that, Krebs is not going to be available to us in that 12-20 range. He will be drafted by someone before he gets too close to our pick. Dude is a rock star in the making and I only have Caufield ahead of him because I want a prolific goal scorer and we stand a better chance of getting that with Caufield.

Sitting 13 OA now. That slot carries a 6.6% probability of winning one of the three lotteries.

There's at least 13 players that I really like so if we don't pull off a miracle and make the playoffs then at least there's a good chance I'm happy on draft day.

Hughes
Kakko
Turcotte
Krebs
Newhook
Byram
Podkolzin
Brink
Cozens
Zegras
Tomasino
Dach
Soderstrom

Don’t think we have the budget for that. Not if we want to keep Schmaltz and Galchenyuk. Can we afford their raises and whichever player we could get for the 13-15 overall?

Not so sure about this, even without new ownership I think we can re-sign Schmaltz this year and add another 5-6 million to the roster. Galchenyuk's contract is due after Hjarlmasson's expires, so we potentially only add two million to re-sign him. Stepan and Goligoski come off the book the following year. I can see us having the room to increase the budget by at least 2 million each season, so it's a matter of moving chair around.

If we can move Goligoski this summer we absolutely have the space to add some forward depth.

Edit: much rather keep the 13OA unless it is moved to bring someone on like Huberdeau.

@Grimes - unfortunately Galchenyuk has only next season left. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent after this next season. We have to sign him or trade him by the next deadline.

I would definitely be okay with moving Goligoski to make budget space for someone who can score goals. Phil Kessel or Jason Zucker would be nice. Conveniently Pittsburgh and Minnesota are the two teams I could see Goligoski waiving his no-trade for.

That pun had me Holden my sides.

I rewatched some U18 last week. That Podkolzin is such a beast. He’s just everything you want in a player. Hits to hurt, plays with passion, never stops working, hounds the puck relentlessly, tremendous physical gifts of size, strength, and speed. Plus he’s got great puck skills, a ton of talent, and plays an entertaining, high-flying game.

It’s no wonder he was able to convince Valeri Bragin (the Russian equivalent of a Dave Tippett and Mike Keenan hybrid) to accept him on the U20 roster (which he barely did with Svechnikov the year before). It’s also no wonder he worked his way up into better minutes as that tournament went on (which Svechnikov was unable to do the year before) via hard work, defensive play, and PK contributions.

I wouldn't move Chucky for either of those two. Now, if you are talking about a player like Huberdeau, well, that's a different story. If we move Chucky it better be for a young better player, not over the hill player like Kessel.

Merkely had a hat trick last night. This kid deserves a shot, and makes Fischer or Garland much more expendable but even removing one of them and adding Merkely doesn't give us space to add another forward. We really have too many 2nd and 3rd line players.

Keller-Schmaltz-Zucker
Galchenyuk-Dvo-Merkely
Crouse-Stepan-Hino
Grabner-Hayton-Garland

Archibald-Cousins-Kempe can all be added for injuries

Just play all lines pretty somewhat evenly. If Hayton doesn't make the cut slot in Cousins there. Who am I missing besides Fischer, who would be used to acquire Zucker?
