When has that ever worked out. I'm serious when has a team traded their pick and prospect for a pro player and looked back and thought. God damn that was a good trade.
It must happen once in awhile.. but I don't recall.
I do know every time we've traded our 1st... we've gotten taken to the cleaners.

Fair point.

Honestly don't think the Oilers are stuck with Lucic much longer anyway. Maybe a season more, but after that the amount of actual dollars left in his deal isn't much, you could retain 50% of it on July 1, 2020 and the actual average dollars left is $1.67 million/season.

*braces the moment for when HF Oil lynches me and TB12 un-adopts me*

Whoever the GM is, needs to be considerate of the situation. Let's focus on what we know

1. The Oilers are picking 8th
2. There's somewhat of an onus to succeed NOW. The whole world knows Connor said he'd stick around. That doesn't mean "don't support him" by taking baby steps. No. You push forward.
3. Can they trade up? -That is highly unlikely. They have little of value they can part with right now.
4. Will who they pick be ready to go right way? -Also highly unlikely. We're talking a few years as long as they don't decide to make a JP redux.
5. The 8th pick is indeed valuable. It's possible the Oilers can get a haul for it.

I am of the belief that unless they do big something on draft day or have a solid play on July 1st, the Oil are gonna be right back to 8th overall and another year gone by of the organization riding in neutral. So it all boils down to what you're gonna wager on. A failing Lucic and post-hip surgery JP; whose agent has expressed a desire for him to leave and the probably 10 combined goals (if you're lucky) they'll combine for.

Or you do some crazy **** and dangle the #8 overall and you get someone who is gonna help NOW. Preferably a top 6 forward.

I know it's crazy. Because it is.

And it's also because anyone who says the Oilers are going to have enough scoring to run Hitchcock's dinosaur dead puck system is either silly or lying to themselves. Let's pretend the 8th pick just got traded for said top 6 winger

Draisaitl-McDavid-Chiasson
(new wing)-RNH-Gagner

That's still not enough offense boys.

But let's do something else crazy. Let's add another 20 goals in there. You call someone like Anders Lee (maybe not Lee himself but you get it) and suddenly a guy like Kassian and his 15 goals/26 points are on the 3rd line where it belongs and is not being relied on for a primary source of offense.

Trade for a top 6 wing and sign another via UFA and sell them on playing with McDavid and Draisaitl and suddenly it's

Draisaitl-McDavid-UFA (20 goals)
Traded wing (20 goals) -RNH-Chiasson
Kassian-Brodziak-Gagner

Now suddenly your 4th line got better because Kharia is on it and you have multiple 10 goal scorers on your 3rd.

Get JP to Finland, find Precious and his $6 million salary a 1st class ticket to the sun

I know it's risky. But they can either wait til last year of RNH's contract and try to sell him on hope that his team's gonna finally get its **** together after 10 years or God forbid they lose Chiasson this year and it'll be another 2 steps backward on the way.

Don't be the person who starves because they're hopeful to outwait the famine

Consider trading out if you can get another scoring winger. If not..... yeah take your pick at 8th
When's the last time a top 10 pick was moved and the team moving the pick improved?

Would Calgary call the Hamonic trade a win? It cost them one of Dobson or Wahlstrom.

What are his other strengths? He’s one guy I’m not as familiar with but it’s the American version of Dach/Cozens in terms that neck and neck ranking preferences.

I’m going to try and watch some film this weekend on him.

Center. Good speed. Fantastic Hockey IQ. Unreal playmaker

Not the best shot. Not big. Not a great forechecker

So doesn’t have the relentlessness of Turcotte?

I watched some tape and focused on Turcotte and I came away extremely impressed at his game. Elite hockey iq, skating, hands, it goes on and on.

We already had " crazy " with chia at the helm. I'm done with crazy.

I'll take the pick and screw everyone else's premonitions of what will happen.

Great effort from Dach just there. What a player put it off the post.

No, not that hungry. But watching his playmaking is Draisaitl or better yet, Pettersen esque

Wahlstrom looks like ass, and Dobson is still balancing on meh or Peitrangelo level

Hard to tell what they’ll become 1 year after they were drafted.

Also Wahlstrom was on a shit college team. Was never high on Dobson to be honest.

The NJD got better for a hot second with Schneider before his health failed on him and it would've happened especially if the rumors are true the Flames would've given up Backlund and (I think?) Wideman for the #4 and meanwhile the Oilers could've just taken Sergachev anyway. Your point stands as valid because believe me, I know it's a crazy thought. You don't HAVE TO trade the pick. But if they got a top 6 winger why would they not consider it at least?

It seemed like everyone grew a boner and ran out of skin for Dobson based off of an end of season, week long tourny.

I think he'll still be a decent d-man in the NHL, but right now it's still too early to tell who outright won that trade.

Can someone sell me on Krebs and Zegras? They seem like okay consolation prizes but dont really get me excited.

Maybe I'm pessimistic but I see very little chance that one Hughes, Kakko, Byram, Turcotte, Dach or Cozens falling to us.

Podkolzin scares the crap out of me for the oilers and their history with Russian players.

Boldy seems kinda meh.

Caufield is tiny.

I have some time for Soderstrom but hes a reach at 8.

The pending expansion draft.
We trade the pick for a winger we may end up having to lose the winger or giving up more to keep them. We use the pick, and then maybe sign a guy in free agency. Unless we can also move Lucics NMC, it's a dangerous idea sadly.

I like 8.

It guarantees we have a shot at a guy I like and it's far enough back that the guys I don't really want will hopefully have been taken.

Give me Turcotte/Dach/Zegras/Krebs.

I like it because it almost guarantees the kid goes back to where he belongs rather than be rushed into the line-up. Hopefully they solve their issues and add this kid to a good line-up later instead of shoehorning him in at 18.

Why would Edmonton move this pick? If what we want to happen i.e them pushing for a cup soon this could be the last top tier pick they get. By the time Edmonton is really contending which I hope is next 2 years this puck should be ready to step up in AHL/NHL. Also being expansion exempt is another bonus.

The Athletic writers got together and this was their mock

1. Hughes
2. Kakko
3. Podkolzin
4. Cozens
5. Byram
6. Turcotte
7. Dach
8. Zegras
9. Krebs
10. Boldy

That said apparently Buffalos gm hasn't picked a CHL guy yet so Zach and Zegras could easily switch.
Buffalo in the last 2 seasons only Euros and USA guys. Odd.

Zegras is the single most exciting offensive player in the entire draft after Jack Hughes. Elite hockey sense/IQ, fantastic passer, great skater, and amazing hands, just overall a dynamic and explosive offensive player. Probably has one of the highest offensive ceilings in the entire draft, comparable to guys like Marner and Pettersson. I don't see him as a consolation prize at all, in fact, if Turcotte is gone, he would be my preference.

1.New Jersey-Jack Hughes
2.New York-Kappo Kakko
3.Chicago-Bowen Byram
4.Colorado-Kirby Dach
5.LA-Dylan Cozens
6.Detroit-Alex Turcotte
7.Buffalo-Trevor Zegras

How I see the draft playing out to this point what the Oilers would do and what would do probably differ, id take the falling Podkolzin but I see the WHL factor playing a role which means they pick Krebs.
