Yeah...I like him usually but he is out to lunch there. Soderstrom isn't even the best D still left. That's Broberg.

And even then, he has us taking another right shot offensive D...when that's our prospect strength right now
I watched that video recently. The part where he says "Oilers fans I think we can agree this is your greatest need." Yikes..

Clearly a forward is our biggest need and forwards are the BPA anyways.

That wasn't his Mock Draft though, it was hockeyprospects

Yeah. Hockey prospects.com has some...fun rankings

2014
1. Sam Bennett
2. Sam Reinhart
3. Aaron Ekblad
4. Nikolaj Ehlers
5. Nicholas Ritchie
6. Leon Draisaitl

Their top 10 this year is

Hughes
Kakko
Podkolzin
Turcotte
Byram
Krebs
Dach
Cozens
Boldy
Zegras
Seider
Soderstrom

They don't even think we would take the defender they have highest ranked ..so odd.

If that's the case then I think the Oilers should be targetting Leason with the 2nd round pick. He seems like the most NHL ready. Could step right into the bottom 6 role

I agree but I wouldn't bet on him being there at our 2nd. I see him as a guy who maybe doesn't have all star ceiling but he could jump in next year or one after and be a decent depth scorer like you mentioned. Needs a little work on his skating and edge work but his size/skill package is definitely a plus.

The Hockey guy (youtube) along with the help of a pro scout did a mock draft
and they came up with Soderstrom for the Oilers. Meh ...

They let Dach slip to 11, I doubt that's happening (as he admits too)

You have to admire him for the amount of content he puts up. The guy is devoted to his following, no doubt about it. He puts in a ton of work. Its impossible for one person whos watching every team to be knowledgeable about every team. But saying that, I dont think he actually watches the Oilers much.

I did watch the video though. I do agree that the Oilers need more transition from the Defense to the Forwards, but I dont think Soderstrom is the guy. He mentioned drafting Soderstorm to run the PP, isnt that why we drafted Bouchard? I feel like so many media people dont know our team very well.

I like Broberg. I agree he lacks flash/iq....but i think he may be a better defender than nurse was at the same age....and room to grow his game a bit.

Plus swedish defender...

I’ll be intrigued to see how both Krebs and Newhook do at the U18’s. I currently don’t want Krebs at 8 but a big tourney could change my mind. Likewise, Newhook is ranked a little lower but given he’s in the BCHL, his league numbers mean very little.

What do you like about Broberg over soderstrom? From all the scouting reports out there it sounds like Broberg has questionable hockey IQ.

What do you like about Broberg over soderstrom? From all the scouting reports out there it sounds like Broberg has questionable hockey IQ.

Philip Broberg is a smart two-way defenceman with undeniable skill. His fluid skating ability allows him to punish over-extension immediately with how quickly he can start plays from his own end. What his impressive mobility tends to overshadow, though, is his positional play. While he doesn't always make the high percentage play, he is very perceptive and thinks his decisions through. On the fly, he pays close attention to where the puck's going and where it's been. This allows him to read the play early and make the most of any time and space found. All-in-all, Broberg could be the most complete defenceman in his draft class. He's got elite mobility and hockey sense, and he doesn't give up his own end. (Curtis Joe, EP 2018)

He has exceptional skating ability and exceptional command of the game in every single regard, Craig Button - TSN 2018
Smooth defenseman, likes to take advantage of his remarkable skating ability and good reach to carry the puck up the ice, Draftin Europe 2018

Bob McKenzie - TSNJan. 24 th: "Philip Broberg, the 6-foot-2-3/4, 199-pound offensive defenceman from Sweden who plays for AIK in Sweden’s second-level professional league. Broberg appears to be the only legitimate threat to Bowen Byram as the top defenceman in the draft. Broberg is considered an excellent skater who, as one scout put it, is a “one-man breakout” who exhibits strong offensive tendencies."

Skating

Broberg is an outstanding skater and this defines his game. He has excellent speed, moving effectively in both directions. His first step quickness and acceleration are also top-notch as he reaches that top-end speed in just a few strides. His agility and pivots are also very good but could still use some work to reach the same level as his speed and acceleration. The strong-skating allows Broberg to play an effective two-way game. Broberg’s long stride generates a lot of power and he is able to fight through checks. His excellent balance and solid base allow him to win battles against his opponents, especially when he has been playing against those his age. There is room to get stronger and more powerful when facing men.
Offensive Game

Broberg handles the puck well. Combined with his skating, he can take the puck out of danger and move it up the ice. He also has the ability to carry the puck through the neutral zone and create offence on the rush. Broberg also has good vision and passing skills. He starts the transition game by head-manning the puck and can play the point on the power play. Broberg moves well laterally and uses his ability to walk the line and change angles to create passing lanes. He is a creative player who can thread the needle with a tape-to-tape pass to set up a teammate.
Broberg’s slap shot is hard but could use some improvement on accuracy and on his ability to get it through shooting lanes. Broberg also has a good wrist shot and snapshot as well as a quick release which he takes advantage of by sliding down from the blue line to get closer to the net. However, he can again work on his accuracy with these shots.
Defensive Game

Broberg uses his skating to play an effective defensive game. However, he combines that skating with high hockey IQ and it makes him even better. He reads and anticipates the play extremely well, cutting off passes before they happen and transitioning to offense. While not a huge hitter, he uses his size to battle along the boards and help clear the front of the net. He is not afraid to block shots or take a hit to make a play and clear the zone. An active stick helps Broberg to pokecheck opponents and get the puck off of them.
- Ben Kerr, 2019

December 2018 – As a 17-year-old, Broberg has been a full-time pro player at the second-tier pro league in Sweden, the Allsvenskan. So far this season, Broberg has put up seven points in 27 games which is impressive production for someone so young in that league. Broberg has great speed which is pretty rare for a six-foot-three defenseman. He can also handle the puck at high speed. His lateral movement isn’t great, though, and his puck-skills and vision don’t seem to be high-end. Broberg still needs to improve his defensive game but with his size and hockey sense, it’s expected that part of his game will continue to grow. With his late June birthday, Broberg is pretty young for the 2019 NHL Draft. He’s a lock for the first round, and some teams may even consider him in the top ten. Broberg will represent Team Sweden at the World Juniors as the only first-time draft-eligible player on that roster but his role is expected to be small. Jokke Nevalainen

He's a big body, skates well, and every scouting report notes on his high hockey IQ. He looks to have a great transition game, playing a North-South brand of hockey. Looks to be comfortable on a rush and looks for the easy play if he's passing it out of the zone. I've only see this "low IQ" on this board.

I'm very high on Newhook. He'll do decent at U18's I believe.

Living in Saskatoon, I've been lucky enough to catch the Blades/Raiders series live, and watched the two away games on Sportsnet, and Kirby Dach is absolutely playing at another level. I thought he looked bored at times in the regular season, and wanted to see more from him.

This playoff series he controls the play, and does whatever he wants out there, best player on the ice and it's not even close, he's a treat to watch. I'm scared if the Blades take this series, he moves up and out of our range.

I guess I'm not the only one who thinks this kid is the real deal :thumbu:

Would be unfortunate if both Zegras and Turcotte missed the U18's.

I was super choked when Oilers passed on Debrincat, especially with his history of scoring and playing with McDavid. Seemed absolutely stupid to me. Now looklat him. Reading and watching about Caufield seems like they could get a similar and even potentially better player. While size has been Important, it's getting less and less impactful each year and I honestly don't really care about how big a player is and I think Debrincat and Gaudreau have proven that. Scoring that much with how small they are is pure IQ and skill and that's what Oilers lack.
I was shocked when we threw away the opportunity to get McDavid's triggerman in Erie.

Turcotte is out too? Seems like he’s missed a lot of time this year.

I think so yeah. There was some talk in his thread on the prospects board that he was out with illness but speculation that the "illness" is actually some sort of injury that USA hockey are trying to cover up or something. I have no idea, but sounds like he might miss the tourney as well.

To be fair Burakovsky was also McDavid's triggerman in Erie the season prior and he hasn't really panned out. It looks bad in hindsight, but I understand the reasons why he was passed over. He was one of the players I was ok with Edmonton taking at that pick, but so was Benson.

Hopefully Turcotte drops to 8 because of "Injury Proneness".
