Maybe time to start thinking about a deal with Edm for their 8 OA with significant $ retained on Lucic from the Oil. That might be a better way to get at these spots if we can't find somebody to take our scarps and the TO pick and move up?

If we dont land Byram then we can take a Cozens and see what's there for the Edm choice. I would consider it and would be willing to buy down the retention with other assets if that gets its done.

Lucic isn't totally useless hes just way overpaid for what he can do these days.

From what i have been reading on other boards and with his statement of not wanting to go to the ahl I could see Pod dropping out of the top 3 there maybe a team drafting 6 -10 that wants him. I doubt that will get us another first but a 2nd or a young player to move up for a player we aren't interested in draft is something they should consider if offered. Any free swing at a extra asset or two should be considered

Doesn't Podkolzin have a 2 yr deal in the KHL?

Why would the Kings be looking to dump Carter? That’s an insanely bad idea. Beyond insane. The Kings don’t need cap space and they don’t need to get rid of Carter. If we want to trade down five spots to pick up an extra second or a prospect or something, that’s fine. But you’re out of your mind if you think 1. the Kings would do that, or 2. the Kings should do that.

Vancouver wouldn't do this in a million years, anyway. The only reason to keep Carter, Phaneuf, Tofolli and Lewis, is if the Kings want a top 5 pick on 2020. I think these 4 are gone. If Blake truly has 8-10 players coming on, then these 4 are probably gone. He has to cull at least 5 to bring 8-10 on. He did mention Kuapri being one of the 8-10....so assume that means ones like Luff..and maybe Clague...so maybe the 8-10 are ones in the system and could mean a permanent spot for Walker, Roy...etc, but at least 5 will have to go to make room. None of this carrying 3 extra and scratching 3 every game.

Didn't you hear Blake on the exit day? He clearly said "we have to be better at #2 center" Carter can't be better. He's done. So, expect Kempe, Prokhorkin or Kupari to vie for that spot. Nikolai can play center.

Lucic would have to be protected in the expansion draft. After the season the Kings had, why would you want to add that sloth with a crippling contract. Even at 50% retention, the length and the NMC and his deterioration make him a negative asset. And you want to add that on top of Phaneuf, Carter, Quick, Kovalchuk?

I’m not sure if being the oldest, slowest, and most expensive team in the league is the way to go.

well if u look a the hf boards like i have It seem a lock that Turcotte is going to the black hawks He played jr there and would help the pr there Next the avs seem to want Byram at 4 if u believe there fan poll. I think one of Cozen Duch Zegras will be there at say 8 and we can pick up a decent asset or two on top u have to consider it.

Fans will be all over the place till June. I trust the scouts and their reviews of the actual player. Podz is #3 and if Hawks want Turcotte that's fine. But honestly Pods should not drop past us.

Of course alot can change from now to draft day but:
A move to drop from 5 to pick 8 is risking potentially losing out on Turcotte\Byram\Cozens\Dach and Podz.(picked at 5)

Podz #1 Russian Prospect
Cozens and Dach #1/#2 Canadian prospect
Byram: #1 D
Turcotte: I would rate him at #2-#3 US prospect (Zegras\Boldy \Turcotte(most complete but very close)

The offer to potentially pass up on these guys would need quality assets to justify this move even if we end up getting Zegras(which I like as well)

Let's not make this draft worse than it is.

From a Kings Fan perspective,
We need to come out of this draft with one of Turcotte\Byram\Cozen\Dach\Podz Same expectations as if we were picking 3rd.
If Podz is at 5 we should consider picking him, i'll be fine with that pick and trust our scouts.

Then: (The hard part)
Try to move that TOR pick in top 15.

He said 8-10 players are turning pro. Means that most will probably be on the farm with call ups. To make space on the team, Leipsic, Brodzinski are probably gone. On the farm, Sherbak is already signed to play in Russia next year and a few others will not be re-signed. Of course we will try to trade the 4 but most probably at the TDL and possibly buyout one contract.

The mayor is saying Kings might look to move down but stay in top 10 . I think this is a good move especially if it goes hughes kakko byram Turrcotte Someone may want to move up to get the russian kid

One thing that I have noticed about the Mayor is that he says a lot of nothing but manages to get it into a big segment or article. He really didn't say anything at all. What does "May be looking to trade down," really mean? Not much. Anyone here can say the same thing and not have to prove anything. I think that he just made that up to get clicks or attention. He could have just as easily said "The Kings may be looking to trade up." I am sure that they are looking to do everything under the sun.

He is creative in that regard.

In all honesty 90% of the people who are posting on the boards are jobless mutts or kids posting from their parent's basement before hitting up the Playstation. It is absolutely comical that someone will say that they know anything for sure since nobody really has connections and if they do they aren't as deep as the braintrust of the Draft Room. The real insiders are not running to post on Hockey's Future.

The only thing that is pretty much etched in stone is that Hughes and Kakko will go 1/2 and frankly, after seeing some weird things over the decades, Kakko could jump Hughes even though it's doubtful. I have read "There is no way Byram will be there at #5," and I just laugh because that couldn't be further from the truth because things will change over and over in two months. I have seen a team pivot minutes before walking up to make the pick and then discuss it afterwards. It's exciting but also shows the instability of the draft.

Regardless of who is there when we pick, the Kings will 100% get a guy who has the ability to play in the Top 3 or the Top 2 if it's Byram. That can't be argued unless the argument is coming from an idiot who hasn't done any research past reading a couple of mock drafts. I am not trying to be a jerk about it but it's just logic.

Unless something really weird happens, one of these guys is going to be there when we pick and frankly, I don't understand how anyone can be disappointed if they acquire any of them because they are all good players:

Cozens
Byram
Dach
Turcotte
Zegras
Krebs

Maybe it's just after years of sitting there waiting for the pick that's sitting somewhere in the "Not good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough for the Top 5," and having it be Matt Zultek, Jens Karlsson and Denis Grebeshkov, I am happy to be in the position we are in.

I highly doubt that the Kings will move down. The chances of getting a first line impact player start to degrade once you get further down.
Many here want Cozens at #5 who isn't a first line impact type more likely a great 2nd liner. You don't select top 5 a player with IQ issues. How has Zacha/Virtanen/etc looked outside of the juniors? Honestly unless going Dach/Byram/Podkolzin no reason to stay at 5. Much smarter to move down then, but personally I'd say straight dumb to pass one of those 3 if available at #5. As much as I love Turcotte after the season we had I prefer taking a guy with true first line potential.

Krebs Captain, Lethbridge Hurricanes centre Dylan Cozens and Baie Comeau winger Nathan Legare were named alternate captains. All three players are eligible for the NHL Draft in June

I’m not sure if being the oldest, slowest, and most expensive team in the league is the way to go.

On top of that, I just think it’s a bad move culturally. This is a guy that Lombardi coveted, traded a lot for, gave all the opportunities in the world, became best friends with many players on the team, and then bailed for a little more term and money.

Not interested.

Sure. And Carter isn’t a second line center anymore. Or maybe he bounces back. But packaging him with a good pick isn’t the answer. Guys like Toffoli, Lewis, and Martinez can be moved. Phaneuf bought out. Quick, who knows. Leipsic and Brodz are gone. The only roster spots that are 100% secure are Kopitar, Brown, Doughty, and Clifford.

Our bottom six could look something like this:

Grundstrom - Kempe - Wagner
Clifford - Amadio - Iafallo

But we have a lot of guys that could push for a forward spot next season: this year’s #5 pick, Vilardi, Kupari, JAD, Thomas, Luff, Rempal.

Hopefully on the defensive side, a guy like Broberg will fall to Toronto’s pick. We also have Anderson, Phillips, Clague, Durzi, and Brickley in the pipeline.

apparently his dad is Alfie Turcotte

From what I've read is the D after Byram are pretty equal. I'd imagine and hope they take BPA with their top 3 picks.

I'm not too concerned with Yanettis comments about size considering their past couple drafts have seen them go after more skill.

who says that ?

Obviously he could turn into nothing because nothing is certain but i read that nowhere.

If you watch this guy skate and move to open spots (that is IQ) to shoot the puck with that deadly wrister, than I wonder what turd thinks he isnt a potential 1st liner.

Can you show the link/s where Cozens has a poor hockey IQ? Also, where is says that Cozens doesn’t have first line potential.

Depends, you look at several mock drafts, and after the top 2, a guy can be rated anywhere from 3 to 10.

If the Kings like 3 or 4 guys equally well and moving down to 8 still allowing you to get one of the 4 and pick up an asset along the way, not sure why you would not do it.

Are you not watching the videos? :sarcasm:

No way you can truly judge these kids by just sitting and watching YouTube compilations of a player. I can understand going to the rink and watching a few games to see what the kid does when he doesn’t have the puck, defensive game, compete level, ability/smarts to get to spaces to create scoring opportunities, etc, and then formulating an opinion but, just going off video clips doesn’t tell the whole story.

ProspectShifts.com

This guy does what I used to do, but on a much larger scale. He gets full length games, isolates the player, and provides video of how the player performs and is utilized in games.

It's not the same as watching them live, but it does give you a chance to see a player in a complete game without watching the entire game. The videos are about 12-25 minutes long.

They're unbiased; they aren't highlights. The web site creator used to compile videos for Hockey Prospect (I think?), which is my favorite independent scouting service.

Here I'll do something easier for all purely youtube watchers... Find me the several reports that praise Cozen's IQ because for each you provide I can provide 2-3x for a Dach, Turcotte, Zegras, etc. Maybe IQ "issues" is over-blowing it yet can anyone argue that or find the numerous pundits who praise yet alone say he has one of the best IQs in this draft like a Dach who he regularly gets compared to? Have watched at minimum a handful of most of the top prospects games, most tournament games, yet admitting only a handful combined live games (and none of someone like Podkolzin who I'm not flying to Russia to go watch lol). Not sure how many can claim even one of those here though.

To what Frolov 6'3 wrote I guess Virtanen has an amazing IQ as exactly what you wrote is exactly what he did in the juniors (except better than Cozens while being faster and MUCH more physical) as with Zacha for two recent examples. How is that working out now? Think NJ doesn't wish they went with the higher IQ guy like Rantanen/Provorov who went right after him? How about VAN with Nylander/Ehlers? Both Virtanen/Zacha have better shots than Cozens too. Also I clearly wrote he is likely going to be a great 2nd liner and that means could play 1st line. Puts him above those two comparable players I brought up yet illustrates a point. Never said end of the world either if we draft him just disappointing given the options and season we just endured. I simply prefer going with a similar floor yet higher ceiling and significantly higher IQ guy over the player one sees goes early often in drafts because, "OMG!!! Dude is huge, skates fast, and has a crazy shot. Let me ignore all else!" Obviously Cozens is actually good at defense yet so is/was Virtanen/Zacha just check the former's advanced stats in the NHL if you disagree.

Honestly I've made my points throughout the past few weeks. Do not need anyone to agree with me and frankly indifferent if anyone does(n't). I just can't stand and not saying you Frolov 6'3, AzKing, or whoever necessarily here is that, but posters who just spout baseless claims and opinions as facts with zero research or knowledge. Fact I still regularly have to read comments like Dach can't skate or Podkolzin loves Russia and never plans on leaving shows just how little many have read, followed up on, and done their own research in as opposed to just regurgitating an ignorant non-contextual tweet someone posted.

Since you asked:
2019 NHL Draft Profile: Dylan Cozens - Committed Indians
"Cozens remains a top-end prospect and will battle all season long for the right to be the second centre off of the board behind Jack Hughes. The Yukon-native brings good size, speed, awareness and a complete offensive toolkit."

"Overall, he’s an excellent 200-foot forward who is very good on draws, can anchor a penalty-killing unit, run a power play and assume top-line duties."

"Cozens is a very good skater, especially given his size. His first step is well above average and his acceleration is very good. He also has very good top-end speed. He is able to keep up with the play and this allows him to play a 200-foot game."

"Cozens is willing to play a physical game and not afraid to throw his weight around in all three zones. He works hard in his own end, and he tends to be in the right position and make the right reads. His positioning and smarts are outstanding though. He is already a very smart defensive player and a good penalty killer. His ability to anticipate plays, as well as his quick stick, create turnovers. Once a turnover is created, he can transition the puck up the ice quickly."

"Cozens may never challenge for a scoring title, but he will still be able to score enough to be a first line centre. Add in his strong defensive game, and the potential to grow into a Selke calibre centre and he could be a franchise-changing force up the middle. While he has also played the wing in junior (mainly his rookie year), his skating, vision and hockey IQ all suggest his future is at centre. In terms of playing style, he is reminiscent of Ryan Kesler, though this is not a skill-level comparison."

You also do realize the things you mention like play away from the puck can be taught.
