Edmundson? Really! I'd rather have Hutton back. He is not a Dman the Kings should be going for.

Edmundson has a Cup-winning pedigree and can skate and move the puck well enough for today's game, but also has size and snarl. I love MacDermid, but he hasn't yet shown that he can play a regular shift for a playoff team. Canes and Blues fans liked what Joel brought to their teams, and I think he could be a great #4-6 on our team moving forward. Say what you want about the new NHL, you still need size on the backend, and I think Edmundson has the potential to be for our next group what Greene or Regehr was for our '12/'14 teams.

Hutton was fine, but he and Edmundson are the same age, and I'd rather have the latter.

Yes. I would thoroughly enjoy a player like Edmundson. Comparing him to Hutton is laughable: Hutton will go down as one of the most forgettable players in Kings history.

Nothing against the guy, but I couldn't name a play he made this season even with a gun to my head. Total place holder.

I liked Hutton a lot and would be happy if he came back. He seemed to fit the style that TMac is trying to move the Kings towards, he makes heads up passes and can carry the puck up with ease. Being forgettable isn't a bad thing for a defenseman, especially when you are generating possession the way he was. He was 2nd on the team among regular defensemen on the Kings by nearly every possession stat and the Roy/Hutton pairing was dominant.

I'm alright with Hutton as a bridge, but the dude would absolutely wither under playoff pressure. He can't find his own slot with a compass. Much too soft, too much 'give' defensively, even for a bottom pairing guy, and there are better offensive guys to be ozone specialists. Might as well see what you have with Clague at that point.

Edmundson being a soon to be 27-year-old UFA, I'd estimate his price tag to be in the $5M per year range, given that he's already earning $3M this year and posting career high numbers.

I suppose the term is the more important part. You can give him whatever he wants on a 3 year deal, but if he's out looking for a 4+ year deal I've got no interest in breaking the bank for him.

Guy with size that can skate, pass and block shots. Why do you not like him? Just curious

Never said I didn't like him. Just that he doesn't fit what the Kings "should" be looking for. For more info please read below...

I just don't think he brings enough to the table to be getting paid like he'll want too. He's already make over 3m and will want a bump in pay. Hutton on the other hand is only making 1.5m and will get a small raise. Plus, Hutton is a decent stop gap, so the next wave of prospects can get accustomed to the NHL. Hutton would probably take another 1 year contract. Edmundson will be blocking the way of LA's young guns to grow their game. He's definitely going to be looking for a multiple year deal. And that "snarl" you want, lead to 72 PIM this season which puts him in the Top20 of PIM leaders. Which doesn't help our God awful PK units and takes him off the ice for the times you want him the most!

Another issue I have is that he has been a sheltered Dman his whole career. He was a bottom pairing guy on a deep Blues & Canes backend. Now you want to put him in a Top4 role with guys that need to be sheltered. I don't see him as a guy that can carry a pairing.

But don't get me wrong. If we get him great. But I'd rather see that spot and money go somewhere else that will move us in the right direction.

If you can upgrade from Hutton to Edmundson you do it. He could play with Roy he could play with Clague or Anderson or Bjornfot or whomever. I'd do it. And who cares if the term is a little more than ideal? This isnt a cap ceiling team...

I agree with you that I don't think we should overpay for what he is. I don't think we should overpay for anyone. My first post was higher on the salary side maybe, but salaries are going up as the cap does (until COVID19 at least). It's not insane to see a veteran #4/5 defenseman on a deep team making $3M. That's less than 5% of the cap.

Edmundson brings something that none of young guns on the backend have: size that he's willing to use. Moverare, Strand, and Brickley are the only players in our system close to him in stature, and none of them are blowing the doors off to make this team. I'll admit that your point about not wanting toughness to translate to PIMs is a good one, but again, if you look at Matt Greene's HockeyReference page, his PIM totals, zone starts, and fancy stats from '08-'15 look awfully similar to Edmundson's 5 seasons. I know stats aren't everything, but it's not like Edmundson isn't capable of being an excellent depth defender on a good team; he's literally already done it for a Cup-winner.

I'll take your sheltered argument, and phrase it another way. The Blues and Canes are widely regarded as two of the deepest defensive cores in the entire league. Edmundson is a former 2nd round pick who has been slow-cooked due to having the likes of Pietrangelo, Parayko, Bouwmeester, Pesce, Slavin, and Hamilton cemented into lineup spots ahead of him.

I also said he would be great as a #4-6; that's not the same thing as saying top 4. Ideally, he's a #4 the next 2 seasons while this team matures, and then he rolls onto the 3rd pairing, exactly as Matt Greene did once players like Muzzin, Voynov, and Martinez found their stride.

Edmundson would be a good add over Hutton. But I wonder if the Kings might look to make a hockey trade to get a better dman. We have a better and growing talent pool and maybe we move some to a cap strapped team along with an NHL player to get a big upgrade. TB comes to mind. I can’t see the massive influx of all the young inexperienced players all at once. Maybe this is another option for Blake. Dean played this card about as well as it could be to get some great pieces.

Tampa might be up against it have Sergachev and Cerrnak (along wit Cirelli) as RFA plus the new contract of Vasilevsky kicking in, plus the unknown of that Cap. They aren’t the ones but they seem to be a good target. Sergachev may be too steep of a price though.

I just don't see how Edmundson is some huge upgrade on Hutton, especially if he is looking for a long term contract. I know possession isn't everything, but Edmundson was the worst Dman on the Canes by most metrics, while Hutton was second best on the Kings by most metrics. They both had the lowest Offensive Zone faceoff % on their teams.

Doughty can say whatever, however, we all know he's not going to care again until the Kings are playing in meaningful games again. He's not going to bring the young guys along. We know that's not him. Be great if it was, but it isn't, so you have to work with what you've got. They're going to have to show him that there's a reason for him to get excited again.

What a f***ing douchey out-of-context paraphrase by Friedman. That was exactly Drew's point in the interview, that he wants to work and get back to being that guy. Someone asked about him and marchand being ranked in the trash talkers and he said he doesn't care about that, he wants to be on the d-man list.

Well shit...that was totally out of context. Not cool. Thanks for clarifying.

Twitter was going after DD after that comment

And that's fine, but that wasn't even the point of that. It was simply media availability asking Doughty everything from what he's doing during the shutdown to when they think he'll be playing again to his inclusion on the smack talk list and the only takeaways were Doughty saying he doesn't think hockey was coming back soon and his response to the smack question which was presented as if he thought he deserved more recognition.

Canadian media just can't help themselves, it's a worse representation than the Vancouver tshirt garbage.

They really are biting the hand that feeds, Doughty gives great quotes without being taken out of context, why continue with this shit?

Friedman should apologize. It's not like a publication creating your headline for you. It's his twitter account after all. Dick move making a target of Doughty like that.
