We could be seeing a PLD over Puljujaarvi situation tomorrow where the “BPA” is Zadina but Montreal goes for Noah Dobson(who can play LD) and they like his overall skill set more and fits a need. More than a winger.

And we will let Dobson in the Q another season just like PLD.
I think if we bypass Zadina it'll certainly be for Kotkaniemi.

Lol. Boqvist clearly has higher upside than Bouchard.

I simply don't agree. Boqvist has flashier puck skills, but not near the playmaking ability of Bouchard. They both have great shots, but one has shown he can use it in all situations and the other has been relegated to the PP or simply not producing. The Karlsson comparisons are ridiculous - lots of tools but a very limited tool box in my viewings.

Upside for both is a dominant offensive defenceman. I see one playing a more cerebral game and the other that has more individual puck skills. Upside is like intangibles, it can mean a million things.

This is what i heard prior to this week: Let's just wait for Bob McKenzie's list, because this is the one that actually reflects team lists - since league scouts are polled. It's been the most accurate in the past. The one list that doesn't usually fall apart.

The problem with your scenario above is that you position Zadina as the immediate need winger and Dobson as the BPA (of the 2), when there's little to suggest the latter is true.

His list is very accurate in the matter that generally 22-23 of the players in his first round go there. Rasmussen went 9 or something stupid like that. Obviously the placements will alter how it goes. The point remains that Zadina isn't necessarily the confirmed BPA as one scout had him around 9 and he fell from his last position.

There's a real disingenuous position being put out here that Zadina is the clear BPA. He isn't. Dahlin is. Svechnikov is and if you take Bob at his word, the next group is Kot with the wingers and the defenseman.

That's right. Zadina is not the clear BPA.

It's equally disingenuous to suggest Dobson is BPA over "immediate need" Zadina. If anyone should be labelled as BPA over Zadina, it's Tkachuk, not Dobson. Only 1/10 had Tkachuk out of their top 5, while 6/10 had Dobson out of their top 5.

Not according to what Timmins said yesterday. Position is a part of the asset value when determining BPA. A center gets a built-in higher rating on account of his position.
Well that's silly considering it's no guarantee the guy remains a center. BPA should mean pure grade.

Right, and position is something that's already factored in to the rating/ranking/poll results/McKenzie list. The scouts have a positional bias.

If you see Dobson as a highly likelyhood to become a #1 or #2 defenseman in the mid-to-long term (and I certainly do), I don't think it's wrong to have him above Zadina.
He's definitely a great prospect, but D are always a gamble (and have less value on draft day hence why the rarely go #1 due to the projection required), plus we are stacked at RD.

But how do we know that the scout(s) that’s had it at 9 aren’t working for a team stacked with wingers already. We don’t know what those teams need, so they could have him ranked lower just because of the needs of their teams. Not necessarily because he is a lesser prospect.

Something to consider if Montreal truly picks Kotkaniemi and the fears of developing a center, Gal example and so on.

Julien has had Bergeron& Krejci in Boston, he's seen their development. Kotka is similar to those guys& next year the plan is to play him as a full time C in Finland.
In 2019 development camp Julien could have a 18y full time 6'2 200lbs 2way center to mentor, who is praised for his IQ, just like Bergeron& Krejci.

Julien is very demanding of his younger players(atleast was in Boston), defensive mistakes aren't his favourites, high risk plays aren't his favourites.
Kotka should be the type Julien is willing to be patient with and be at his best.

He also lost Seguin. I think Bergeron was a top center in NHL by time Julien got to B
