Just suggesting that maybe we should be drafting potential no. 1Cs where they are most plentiful -- and that's not at this year's draft. We're trying to do too much with one draft and the quest for a no. 1C is probably causing this management group to try and make up for 6 years of ineptitude. Another draft year is needed and trades can be made to secure enough picks next year so we we have some real no. 1C choices in the first round rather than projecting how many correctables a given player should be afforded.

In and of itself, it's not a bad strategy in a risk-minimizing approach to the draft. But you're also less likely to hit your targets with so few classes loaded with high caliber Cs and so many variables possibly coming into play a year from now.

If they think there's one available, they should be drafting potential 1Cs both this year and the next.

Red flag for me right there. Already there are questions about the fluidity of his skating and now he needs to get faster? Don't want that kind of contingency on a player selected 3OA. It's a skating league, you can't go into it with a guy who has to improve his speed -- you want a guy who possesses that skill from the get-go. You need that answer up front.

People were saying Laine was too slow, he won't be an impact player in the NHL and whatever garbage.

He scored 36 as a 18y rookie and 44 goals as a 19y old. Barkov was slow as well, today he's a ppg 2way beast, Rantanen wasn't the quickest either, scored 84 points this past season.

By not drafting the best center in this draft, we maximize our chances at getting a top center.

It's just science, bro.

Is there actually data that sugest that? The only one I can find is that the players are bigger than ever.

In fact we just saw the "smaller and faster" team lose to the bigger one.
Are you talking about Vegas ousting Winnipeg?

Mark Stone was a terrible skater when he was drafted, it definitely can be improved.
Of course it can and there are tons of examples out there. The problem is that it dowsn’t always improve and that’s the risk. Also, the further from the norm a prospect is, the more he needs to improve. Kotkaniemi ‘s skating needs to improve significantly to be an impact center in the NHL.

Montreal Canadiens Draft Preview - Last Word on Hockey

Draft preview for the first two rounds of this years draft. What do you guys think? Would you be happy with these second round picks?

Despite my bias and preference to Boqvist, I agree with Zadina at #3 as he’s among the BPA and fills a need goalscoring-wise, especially if/when we deal our current LW captain.

Yes to O’Brien as well. Dellandrea would be a steal IMO if he is there for our seconds.

Still hoping for one of Sandin or AlexAlex for our #35. Also want Hillis with one of our seconds.

Note that I expect this but a haul of Zadina, Sandin, Dellandrea, Hillis and O’Brien would be awesome. That said, while unlikely all 5 are picked, let alone be available when we pick, I think at least 3/5 are obtainable (Dellandrea and Sandin I think will be gone before #35).

By drafting a lower ranked center in a draft that is weak at center, we maximize our chances at getting a top center.

And we maximize our chances at getting a less talented player. This team needs talent at all positions. This center thing is way overblown.

I've had Wahlstrom pretty consistently ranked ahead of Zadina and that's going to remain.. and while I'm doing some extensive reading in the blackbook today at the quotables and game reports, the only identifying trend I can find in all of this is that scouts feel Zadina is more NHL ready, the rest of their descriptors indicate that Wahlstrom is more talented, has more at his disposal.. it's just a matter of Wahlstrom taking a bit longer to get there.

I think that's kind of a bad reason to put Zadina ahead, if you think Wahlstrom's ultimate upside is better, who cares who gets there first?

I’d love Wahlstrom as well but I’m just more consigned to the fact that he’s not the type of player the Canadiens may covet. I hope I am wrong as like you, Wahlstrom is higher on my list (#4, after Boqvist).

Wahlstroms boogeyman is physical implication though. This rarely changes for a player, I dont have an example of a player getting it. Thats my main concern.

And while Wahlstrom as a better offensive skillset, im not sure it sets him apart from Zadina. Theyre both the least sexy picks the Habs could make. Even Tkachuk would thrill me more.

You're crazy and a bunch of these reports, plus what I've seen, has mentioned his physical implication and his strength on the boards.. he just favors trying to turn the puck over with his stick which is a coachable moment.

Step 1: draft another 30 goal scoring winger

Step 2: ???

Step 3: somehow end up with a championship center lineup.

It's worked like a swiss watch the last 10 years, why change now?
