What kind of defenseman does Nils project to be, whose game does he play similar to? I have been more interested in Krastov and Miller, haven't paid much attention to our 3rd pick of the first round. Definitely the only time I can remember thinking that in my 30 plus years as a Ranger fan.

A RHS Toby Enstrom type maybe?

I don’t know, he is just a likeable kid. You like him when you see him play, a little chippy, it’s not much, but it’s there, gutsy offensively, and very calm and collected overall. Solid, rarely make mistakes.

I do think that he is a bit of a long shot to become a good NHLer, top 3 D for his team. But what really speaks in his favor is that he is a very late bloomer, I made a post about it a while back, don’t remember all the details, but he was really really small as a 14-15 y/o. Grew a boat load between the start of one season and the next. The kid is still growing a lot physically. Who knows where he can be in 3-4 years?

Lundkvist had no points, and played 11:25 today in a 1-0 win over Frolunda.

I interviewed Nils Lundkvist earlier this week by the way. If the mods are okay with it, I can share a link to an article when I publish it

I watched the two prior games, not as good as some of the games I saw earlier in the (middle of a) season. Mostly about mental awareness but he’s definitely playing more physical.

Yeah, he has an edge to his game lately. I like it.

FYI: Lulea is in the running for one of 4 tickets to next season's Champions Hockey League. With the Vienna Capitals already qualifying, there's a chance Lundkvist might come to Vienna next season!!! Imagine that

from the little i've seen, a stralman/enstrom type is exactly what i'm expecting. i think there's an outside chance he really blows up because of his skating/hockey sense as his strength builds, but i feel like those guys are likely realistic expectations. what i'm also a huge fan of is his coordination/body control. he'll be an nhl guy, we'll see how much growth remains.

as an aside, has it been discussed how young/physically immature he, along with many of sweden's best prospects appear? no wonder they've struggled in the medal rounds of the world juniors when the physicality ramps up...like lundkvist much of their team annually looks demonstrably younger across the boards compared to most teams...would guess if it was a u22 tourney their results would look very different.

Experienced forward Fredrik Olausson is asked to comment on how his teammates are off the ice:

Nils Lundkvist, 18

Probably tripled what he can bench press since the start of the season. Has started to play dirty, even in practice, I like that. Laughs a lot and spreads good energy.

The comment on Kovacs was fun, he said like what’s the point, you will only sensor everything I say. Then he tells a story on how Kovac always does things his own way. When his frequent flier card was about to be upgraded he went back and forth between Luleå and Stockholm just to get a pizza at the air port to get the last pts... ;)

I wouldn't mind offering Kovacs a contract again if he wants one and plays well enough to earn one (and that story is kinda funny). Good to hear about Nils though

So for anyone watching Nils, is he top 4 quality? I see he's in good company regarding points for under 18 year olds, which is cool and all. Do we think he can translate to NHL?

I got an email this week from the person within the Luleå organization who helped me set up the Lundkvist interview, and after telling them I am flying to Sweden next week to attend the game against Linköping, I got this email:

So, maybe some of the Swedish people here can keep an eye out on TV?
