I don't think anything about Hughes' performance in the BCHL has been impressive. Not from a statistical standpoint. 43 in 43 is tied for 35th in points per game, and most of the kids ahead of him will never sniff the NHL draft. And then when you consider he has played all season with Alex Newhook, the BCHL's Connor McDavid who has 74 in 43, it becomes even less impressive. I'm not saying his season has been bad, but I don't think it has been at all noteworthy. I'll be curious to see what he does at Northeastern next year, though.

My expectations of him are minimal, but he was a 7th round pick.

Right, and I think his performance has probably been commensurate with that draft position. Throughout the year we've had more than few people talk him up, say he's the next Barron, he's having a great season, etc. I don't think any of that is the case. He may become the "next Barron" or whatever but I'll wait to say that until he actually produces as such.

Using outdated baseball parlance, he's a classic draft-and-follow. I mean almost everyone is in the NHL, but he just reminds me of the old baseball picks that you knew had talent but had no idea how it would develop, and he's going to Juco route by playing in the BCHL. Tyler Nanne felt the same way to me--draft and follow.

Nils is better than K'Andre. Change my mind
K’Andre has all-around, top pairing upside and has had an amazing D+1 season already. I don’t think anyone expected this kind of production out of him so early. And while I love Nils almost as much as K’Andre, Nils just doesn’t have that upside. I would say he has a higher floor than K’Andre, but if I’m being conservative, I expect K’Andre to at least be a solid top 4 d-man and Nils to be at least a good bottom pairing d-man. Point is, there is not a huge difference between K’Andre’s floor and Nils’ ceiling. I still think Nils will be a 2nd pairing Brannstrom-type defenseman, while I think K’Andre will develop into a #2/3 Parayko-type defenseman. They are both having great D+1 seasons, but we haven’t had a prospect with as much upside as Miller in a long time, and he’s rewarding the Rangers for trading up for him.

But obviously, this is just my opinion, and it’s almost impossible to compare these two, since they play in different leagues. That’s why I always go with upside (unless the player is a huge long shot, like Hughes or Ronning).

Based on the countless comparisons between BIG10 and SHL hockey

Yea, I just added that in my edit. It’s nearly impossible to compare, so I just usually go with upside.

I later said that post wasn't serious. I just like Nils and think he has a lot of upside. I have not seen enough of Miller to form an educated opinion. I usually stay away from discussions about NA prospects because it's nearly impossible to watch enough. Same goes for people in NA and EU prospects

Fair enough.

You talk about upside as if it’s something measurable, for which you, and only you, have the exact right formula.
I’m pretty sure it’s fairly obvious that someone like Chytil has more upside than Andersson. But that doesn’t mean he will become a better player. And many people agree. Prospects with all the tools, for example, like speed, skill, and size, are going to be considered to have more upside than guys who are slow skaters and/or rely more on their hockey IQ than pure skill. That’s just how it is. Hockey IQ by itself allows a player to be an NHL player, but a skilled player with plenty of speed and size, who develops hockey IQ can not only become an NHL player, but an elite one.

On the contrary, a player with all the tools, but zero hockey sense, will never be an effective NHL player. That’s why a player with more hockey sense and less skill is considered to be a safer player to make the NHL. For me, hockey IQ is the most important attribute a player can have, followed by skating, passing ability, defensive ability, hands, shooting, and physicality, in that order.

I surely get your point and I agree on Chytil vs. Andersson, but the thing is that one could easily make a point about Lundkvist having a higher upside.

Both are pretty skilled players, and to compare their upside there are many things to take into account.

5v5, late 3rd.

He's really picked up his game since the WJC, playing on a different level than before Christmas. Much more controlled in the D-zone. And the coaches are rewarding him with ice time accordingly.

I saw a couple of games back in early December and I liked Nils then too. After a slow start he's really picked up his play from sometime in November and sounds like he keeps improving and now starting to contribute more on offense.

Rubbish. I know a guy that does it. His rankings go all the way to top-62. Talk to me when you get there punk.
