GDT: 2018 IIHF World Championship

I expect Filip will be some day but just not today. That he and Lias made their respective teams is quite an accomplishment at the age they're at.

Sometimes the complaining about the coaching everywhere reminds me of parents complaining that their kids aren't playing enough. Not every coach everywhere is a moron or some evil old man with an agenda. Some of them actually do have a clue about what they're doing.

I will say even some of the weaker teams in the tournament have some very good players---and even if they're not all in the NHL. It might not exactly be the Stanley Cup playoffs but it's still pretty strong competition. All our guys in the tournament are doing fine.

That's exactly my point. Chytil isn't better than Cervenka, Repik, Horak etc. He has the talent to be better, but isn't there yet. A guy like Faksa is much better because he's further in his development. Hockey is a sport where physical strength is as important as talent. That's why so few small players make it to the NHL.

There's no shame in Chytil being the 13th forward on this Czech team. He needs to enjoy the experience

I think it is for established NHL’ers. I don’t want those guys getting hurt. We know what they can do. For the two kids, Shestyorkin and Pionk, I think it’s important.

Canada’s whole team is established NHL’ers. I don’t think there’s a player on there that really needs to prove themselves in the hockey world.

It's not about proving themselves. It's about winning the world championship. It's important to these players. Or is the excitement after winning the final just "pretend"?

Only thing that I think matters in relation to winning this tournament is Triple Gold, so I guess winning this tournament counts for that.

You can`t compare Hank to the Canadian hockey team - he hate losing in any game he participate in injured or not, which is an unique ability to have as a player or a goalie. And not too certain if established NHL players on Canada have a similar approach as Hank. I think that was his point earlier, but that`s why Hank is so good in this sport consider his age too.
Norway lost 3-0 vs Denmark and probably have the worst tournament team in years and struggle to produce anything in these games - hopefully they do something in their last game..

Yeah, Canadian players don't really care about the World Championship, right?

Anyone who says the World Championships is meaningless to established NHLers is just fooling themselves.

NHL players are competitive. Yeah---the Canadians and Americans (and all the players from other nations as well) are probably having a good time over in Europe now too but still they're there to win and consider if you've been in a losing environment with your NHL team all year as most of the NHL'ers picked for this tournament were the chance of playing in a winning one is a big deal. Players like to win and they like to win meaningful games.

And it's a big step up for the likes of Andersson and Chytil--there's a difference playing in a tournament where Mittlestadt, Dahlin and Pettersson are the best players to one where you're playing against a player like McDavid.

Yeah, but I think the point still stands that Canada cares a heck of a lot more about the QF/SF/Final than the group games.

But that wasn't the point at all that was made

Just an observation.

Think its easy to misunderstand how much the players care about the tournament if you see them in a real stinker during the group round. Its up to 10 games in 14 days. The first 7 does not mean much, if anything. To get the best players, especially US and Can give their players a little more freedom mid tournament. They want it to be a great experience as well as a chance to win gold when it matters.

Seeing the Canada-Finland game, I wonder if everyone was sober on the former team when the game started... ;) (OK that is an exaggeration probably, but...)

I think people do not realize how big World Championship is for non-NA nations and players. Not all view it as clearly secondary tournament to SC playoffs compared to those with NA perspective. Even for Canadians and Americans this is an opportunity to represent their nations and a chance to compete for something meaningful (that as top athletes they crave).

This is why we need to step back and realize what a HUGE accomplishment it is for both Filip and Lias that they are participating in this tournament at their age. Not sure who's accomplishment is more significant - Lias for being able to make Sweden's loaded roster or Chytil for doing the same with Czech's at this age. Hail Gorton (and our Euro scouts)

Teams with multiple teenagers scoring at the World Championships:

2016: CAR (Sebastian Aho, Noah Hanifin)
2014: FLA (Aleksander Barkov, Aaron Ekblad)
2012: CAR (Justin Faulk, Jeff Skinner)
2012: MIN (Jonas Brodin, Mikael Granlund)
2010: EDM (Magnus Pääjärvi, Jordan Eberle)
2010: TBL (Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman)
2008: CHI (Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews)
2006: PIT (Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin)
2003: DET (Jiri Hudler, Igor Grigorenko)
2000: VAN (Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin)

It has happened 10 times since 2000 that a team had 2 teenagers scoring at the WC. When you look at this list though, a lot of these pairs are top-5 picks. All the more reason to recognize what a great job we did in the draft. If we exclude top-5 picks from this list, all of a sudden we are left with this:

2012: CAR (Justin Faulk, Jeff Skinner)
2012: MIN (Jonas Brodin, Mikael Granlund)
2010: EDM (Magnus Pääjärvi, Jordan Eberle)
2003: DET (Jiri Hudler, Igor Grigorenko)

The Rangers did something extraordinary. They have 2 teenagers who they drafted outside the top-5, in this years' World Championship. And they are contributing. To me, this is already a success for the Rangers. If one of them can go all the way to the final, that would be fantastic. Imagine Lias winning the gold, 6 months after losing out on gold at the World Juniors? With injuries on the Swedish team, it's not unlikely he will continue playing.

If he loses the Final, he should hang onto the medal for now so he can throw it at Jimmy Vesey.

Swede dropping in, just wanted to say Zibanejad is probably the most important forward for Sweden and we have Forsberg and Rakell. Unbelievable that he hasn’t gotten more points in an NHL season. He is just soooo good.

Good to hear. Hopefully he breaks out for us this year.

Last couple of years injuries have really hurt him I think...always hard to be sure but coming back from a broken leg 2 years ago and then a concussion this year, he really struggled for awhile to get back into things. Once he did, he was very good. If he can avoid a big injury, maybe he can stay more consistent in his scoring
