I think everyone would agree that toughness is good. And frankly if there were somehow room on the roster I’d be happy for the Rangers to keep McQuaid around. I know he’s not a modern defender but he is no slouch and really would be a fine third pair defender for another year or two. I appreciate that’s not a popular opinion and there’s a roster crunch that’s not gonna get easier going forward. But I think a guy like McQuaid brings a lot to the team. More than a guy like McLeod for example. Who, while giving a great effort, his hands are just so shot he really isn’t an effective player. While it’s definitely over the top, his point isn’t entirely wrong.
Since 2010 all of the Cup winners (arguably not Pittsburgh, but lol Crosby and Malkin) have had teams that could play physical and tough. Bruins, Kings, Caps, and even Hawks all had tough guys. Not Brashears and Boogaards, but guys that played hard, played the body, etc.
Also why I’m leery of hopping on the Leafs bandwagon. Come playoff time they have gotten pushed around. Also how many cups has Tampa won in recent years?
It isn’t 1995, but come playoff time, toughness and physical play really ramps up.
