How has Borgman looked since his return?

He's always been inconsistent, but I think he's been solid. Unspectacular, but solid. It may take him some time as a depth defensemen next year, but I can still see a key bottom pairing guy out of him with the right kind of training. He's been learning PK (and I hope he's improved a lot since the beginning of the year when he sucked), so he could be a 15-20 point physical bottom pairing defenseman with some skating ability if things turn out nicely.

Problem is, he's going to be dog-fighting for LD jobs here. Him, Rosen, Sandin and possibly Kivihalme (if the rumours are true) are all guys who could realistically be NHLers within the next two years.

What are the rumours concerning kivihalme? I thought he belongs to nashville.

Nope. Rights expired after he graduated college.

Apparently he's going to sign with us after this season, like Aaltonen did a few years ago.

EDIT: Speaking of Aaltonen, I wonder if Dubas is willing to trade his rights. A team may be willing to toss a conditional 6th or 7th for him. He won't have a spot with the Leafs, but with another team, he may get a shot and terminate his KHL deal to go there.

If Kadri is traded could we not have Aaltonen play 3C? Would be a cheap option

If Aaltonen comes back, or someone else having him in the lineup, certainly gives us options. Whether he is 3C, or Nylander is 3C... it doesn't matter too much, just find something that works for the team. More options/depth is always better.

I don't think he is good enough. Would be a perfect 4th liner who can step up, but we would be in trouble if he had to replace Kadri as a 3C. He may be able to be a passable 4th line winger though, so if the Leafs don't deem Bracco ready, they could replace a Kadri by moving Nylander into the 3C spot and have Aaltonen and Moore compete to replace Nylander's wing spot in the top 9 (with the other on the 4th line). For that matter, they could have Carcone, Korshkov, Timashov, Petan, etc. compete for it too, but I would think two of Bracco, Aaltonen or Moore would probably win. The Leafs will probably also sign a couple of grittier players (i.e. Brouwer, DSP, Acciari, Carpenter, maybe McGinn, etc.) to enter the mix. Simmonds is an option too if he comes cheap enough. Some of those guys won't be good enough to make the team, but the Marlies will have room for their veteran leadership abilities and their toughness too.

The only thing about Aaltonen is that he is going to need a strong guarantee and likely an out-clause that'll allow him to go back to Vityaz if he doesn't make the roster. He's not going to stay in the AHL.

Colour me surprised for how much Bracco scored this season. That's honestly a great sign. Age and all, I can see him being a guy who anchors a third line for scoring all on his own and even like a second line tweener.

Very Marner-like in his abilities and agility. Obviously they are different players overall but in the offensive zone, I think Bracco is right up there with his skill level.

Where's these rumours coming from? Anyone trustworthy?

His passing ability is probably equal and his edgework is great. The shot, perimeter play and hustle can disappear a bit but no doubt the talent is there. He is 22 now though...the time is probably next year which may allow us to move a winger.

We could always trade Marner when he is at the top of his game and replace him with Bracco.

What would we get, I dunno, but might be a good bundle of ELC talent.

I think Marner is the third best player on the team, but we have a real good replacement for him and imagine the assets we could garner, for marner.

Get it, garner for marner. And does anyone want to see another holdout? Cause for sure, he deserves a lot more than what Nylander or Matthews are making.

I can probably count on my hand the amount of teams that went on to be successful after trading their best player (or even 2nd best) in my time watching hockey.

Edmonton won a Cup without Gretzky first attempt I made. But insiders knew, he was a great player, but Messier was the true leader on that team. And then Messier traded him to New York, not such a great move.

Its all about what you get back.

This new cap world really bites the Leafs more than just about anyone. We could always buy our way into the playoffs, now we have to be smart.

And smart would be to trade Marner and garner, cause we actually do have a guy who might be close to being as good as him, in Bracco.

But in a cap world, you aren't going to get all that much for Marner. Who wants to pay 12 million a year for a smurf?

Especially in this present environment where the Blue Jackets are beating team smurf so convincingly.

If you went to trade Matthews in the off season, you wouldn't get much either. Both amazing players, but its a cap world. And both are uber expensive.

That smurf put up almost 100 points this season, is our best PK-er, leads the team in playoffs and blocking shots in the last seconds of a playoffs game, almost with his head.

God I wanted to put you on my ignore list but somehow forgot it, now is the time.

It's true with Colombus beating team smurf the emphasis will go away from small and skilled and back to bigger players leaving Dubas flat footed. He overpaid Mathews now what does he pay Marner and who do we lose to do it?
