Woosh.

Deliberately, I know. Cute sidestep though.

I sidestepped because I don’t think it’s statistically relevant to draw comparisons between Muzzin’s injuries and Vilardi’s.

Franchises give up on prospects all the time. Sometimes they go on to have successful NHL careers with other teams, like Muzzin did. Most of the time they end up on some triple A team in Denmark.

I’ve been skeptical on Vilardi and his injuries from the beginning. At least give me points for consistency. And I don’t think it’s irrational to worry about a kid who can’t stay healthy before playing even a single professional game, especially when he’s expected to become a major impact center.

This is not a Williams scenario where he’s proven his mettle in the NHL and goes through a rash of injuries. Vilardi hasn’t even made it to the big show yet.

If there’s some statistical precedence beyond outliers like Muzzin, then fine. But for now, all I see is an injury prone prospect, and that worries me when he’s supposed to save the franchise.

Why not?

I mean, I think we have another good example nearby (of NOT making it) in Scott Barney. I don't think you're wrong. But I DO think it's relevant because I don't think it's fair to write him off immediately when we have another guy on our team who actually had a back surgery at an even younger age, yet he's playing more minutes than Vilardi ever would. Not sure you can talk about statistical relevance and outliers unless you have some stats on prospects with back injuries somewhere?

I think some hockey players are so good they don't have to worry about training hard or eating right-until they get to the NHL. Hopefully this is the case for Vilardi. Sounds like he has weak core muscles and his back is making up for them when he plays hockey. A trainer from 24 Hour Fitness can fix that.

I'm just like--if this guy can utterly dominate his peers with a wonky back and other injuries--while being probably out of shape to some degree from repeatedly missing camps etc--what kind of beast can he be when fully healthy? Man, the Kings taking their time and training him to deal with it makes me giddy

Or you can look it another way: this kid has some god given skill but his body can’t hold up against other teenagers.

It could very well be a simple core strength issue, and he’ll improve it, and be a beast. Or he could simply not have the physical genetics to compete in the NHL, which is the case for hundreds of prospects every year.

At the very least, you have to admit his consistent back issues are a concern, no?

What does it say about the kings fitness staff that they haven’t been able to fix it in the last year then?
