They are not playing because competitive teams don't play 3 rookies on defense. Not that complicated. There was never a scenario where Pionk Graves and DeAngelo all would be on the team even if they bought out Staal and didn't sign Smith. Even bad teams like Colorado/Arizona didn't just load in an entire defense full of rookies. Not exactly like Graves/Pionk are elite defensive prospects in the NHL that you have to open spots for them.

I like most of the moves. We all knew we're stuck with Holden and Staal for now, with one possibly being moved sooner than later. Graves and Pionk both had great camps. If we need a lefty later this season Graves might finally get that call, Pionk is just out of college, won't be hurt by a season in the minors and a possible call up option. Bereglazov will likely figure things out in the AHL and also be another option. I like that much better over Kampfer or Summers as the depth options.

Puempel waived also doesn't bother me, hopefully he does go unclaimed because at the AHL level he can score. Nieves and Lettieri shouldn't be in the press box, playing time in the AHL will be good for them and both seem to have become real depth call up options.

Andersson to Sweden is the right call, don't like the idea of such a young player in Hartford. Next year he can try to make the team or then be sent to AHL.

A lot to digest there. I think Ola has something when he says Andersson might be a bit worn down. He has played a lot of games and he's been getting hammered with blocking shots etc. OTOH Chytil's taken a couple high hits in both games against the Flyers.

I'm wondering about Desjardins the most. WTF did he do? He got outplayed by Farnham even. Desjardins doesn't have a contract and I hope it stays that way but something's telling me the reason he hasn't been released is they're going to give him a contract. We'll see.

And it looks as if Puempel is headed for Hartford. From the games I watched Matt wasn't that involved and he needed to be.

Move out Staal and Holden. Move in Pionk and Graves. Just saying. We'll be a better team in the long run and maybe even the short run.

Don't like Carey over Lettieri and don't understand why Desjardins is still here. Also Staal, but that was to be expected.

Otherwise, pretty good.

I think it's just a case they want a longer look, being he missed the last games with the suspension. He does not have a contract with us so..

This is all fair.

The issue is that 18 was shoehorned in despite having the worst camp of all defensemen not named Gilmour. Holden is still a thing here, he should be in that spot over Staal.

Like the cuts in general, although I am not sold on the notion to play Chytil and demote Graves and Pionk. This is a retooling year -- those two has potential and can play right away. Why are they not playing? We did we sign Smith?? Why is Staal still here???
Well.. Chytil is a center, both Graves and Pionk are defensemen. So that is really not comparable.

We signed Smith because we had an acute need for a defenseman. As for why we re-signed him (which i guess is what you are really asking), he is solid and dependable, which is something we need. In any case, you could not ice both Graves and Pionk (with a sophomore Skjei and also a relatively "fresh" DeAngelo), that would be a crazy risk.. if it was a complete re-build, and results didn't matter, then sure.. else no :)

As for why Staal is still here.. beats me, hehe. I refuse to believe that they see much value in him (we all see his massive struggles.. people who do it as a very well paid job should certainly see it as well).. so i'll speculate that they felt it was cheaper / better long term to just carry his salary than buy him out *shrugs*

Carey looked good on that line with DD and Vesey plus he's an older guy who doesn't have a little more developing to do like Letteri.

Not big on Carey but as with any sport of its close the waiver eligible guy gets first chance in pro's. Just proper asset management even though it's doubtful Carey would be claimed

Gunna be pissed when we lose Pumps because I can't stand losing depth for free.

With Brendan Smith you also got a bit of edge--something this team lacks. Other than him--Kreider? Miller? Zucc?--maybe De Angelo?

DeAngelo is a rookie by like a game or two.

We could've easily had a defensive core like McDonagh, Skjei, DeAngelo, Shattenkirk/Smith (signing 1 instead of 2), Holden, Staal, Graves/Pionk (or if Staal's bought out or Holden traded, you can add both). And whether they are elite or not doesn't matter, they project as NHL'ers, they are cheap, and they are NHL ready or very close to it.

I kinda like the way AV has the lines distributed. I'd just like to see Lettieri over Carey.

Provided Chytil settles in, I also bet we see Zucc and Buch flipped at some point. But makes sense to go with the two lines that had so much chemistry last year, and to insulate the kid with two most established vets.

Never expected Staal not to get the start of the season, veteran gets the benefit of the doubt.
Now if he sucks, I expect him to be the odd man out and Holden to get his spot after what AV said before camp

So you start Vesey's year off in a poor fashion to hope a guy who's always put up the occasional fluke goal scoring season has another fluke season?

If Grabner is the better player, sure. Honestly he probably is. I don't think these lines stay fixed though so it's perhaps a bit of a moot point to argue too hard about.

I get your point, but I think at this stage coaches are going to be trying out a lot of line combinations and moving players around to get a feel for how they want the lineup to shape up.

Agreed, especially AV.

how is it a fluke season when he has hit over 20 goals 3 times in his career?1 of those being 34 goals. The guy can score goals.Put him with the right linemates and he'll score over 20 again.
