Who of the 3 is the favorite to get the nod as the number one or is it basically going to be wide open going into camp? 3 pretty solid goalies.

I think Oettinger or Parsons. I'd go with Oettinger, some might prefer Parsons. Woll is probably third, but he's also good, so it could be any of them. No returning goalies from last year and no definite starter. Those three in any order wouldn't be a big surprise.

Any chance Foley makes it?

14 points in 12 games for Providence, can play a physical checking role as well.

i just came to post this actually. Foley should make this team as a 3rd/4th liner.

Solid energy with good skating and grit. Leads his college team in points.

Was that article right? Has Bellows potentially played himself off the team? I've counted him as a lock the whole time but he's certainly struggled. Anybody have any idea if they'd actually cut him?

The guy who wrote it usually has fairly accurate predictions. Just his opinion though, USA hockey might see it differently when it comes to Bellows. Obviously we know what he can do and he could still have a good tournament even though he's had a slower start to college hockey. As you and everyone knows around here it's all speculation.

No Bracco? I would have Bracco on the team in the top 9

He could replace Yamamoto in that lineup, but that Mittlestadt-Brown-Yamamoto line was excellent at the WJC-18 last year, I'd keep it together for the WJC-20. I don't see the place for him in the lineup, otherwise. Normally it would make sense to say he replace Debrincat, but players usually don't make the team as an underager, and then not as an overeager. Debrincat has a guaranteed spot over other similar types of players, as long as its close in terms of ability and play this season because of last year.

"USA Hockey will reveal the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team Preliminary Roster today (Dec. 6) on NHL Network’s “NHL Now.”

The announcement will take place during the 4-5pm ET hour with NHL Network’s EJ Hradek, Steve Mears and Michelle McMahon unveiling the news."

Today is December 5? Is it tomorrow?

Only USAH would think it's a good idea to tell people they're announcing the roster at 4PM ET multiple times, including just minutes before 4, only to drag it out over 40 minutes for suspense. The amount of viewers tuning into the NHL Network for the announcement is so minimal it's comical that they think this is doing anything worthwhile.

Roster:

Forwards (x16):

Joey Anderson
Kieffer Bellows
Brock Boeser
Jeremy Bracco
Logan Brown
Alex Debrincat
Erik Foley
Jordan Greenway
Patrick Harper
Clayton Keller
Luke Kunin
Tanner Laczynski
Jack Roslovic
Troy Terry
Tage Thompson
Colin White

Defense (x8):

Jack Ahcan
Joe Cecconi
Casey Fitzgerald
Adam Fox
Caleb Jones
Chad Krys
Ryan Lindgren
Charlie McAvoy

Goalies (x3):

Jake Oettinger
Tyler Parsons
Joseph Woll

Possible Snubs:
  • Kailer Yamamoto - He's been out with injury. If he would have been healthy he should be here, but I've seen nothing on when he's expected back for Spokane.
  • Casey Mittelstadt - Once he was invited to the WJAC, he was out of contention. The fact that he was mostly quiet at Summer Camp and returned to high school hockey didn't help him out. It's a crowded forward group even without Matthews, Tkachuk, etc.
  • Christian Fischer - Did Arizona not release him? Otherwise he should be here.
  • Trent Frederic - He's out with injury. I'm not sure if he would have gotten into the mix either way, but he would have been a deserving invite if he were healthy.
  • Max Jones - He's been having a strong season, but he too is injured.
  • Luke Opilka - No for certain standout in goal, but a deep pool and someone had to be out. As Torgo mentioned, he's had hip surgery (why he missed Summer Camp), and is slowly working his way back into full duty with Kitchener.

All in all, one of the least controversial groups they've put together. Three of the five biggest skater snubs are injured, one may not have been released, and the goalie was out all summer and the start of the season after surgery.

Unless this team wins gold, it will always been known as the "what if?" team for USA Hockey without Matthews, Tkachuk, Werenski, Hanifin, etc. We should strive to have this problem most years like Canada.

Missing:

[*] Christian Fischer - Did Arizona not release him?
[*] Luke Opilka - no for certain standout in goal, but deep pool to choose from and someone had to be out.

Opilka seems to still be easing himself back into starting regularly after surgery in Kitchener, so I'm not too surprised to see him left off. The plan was to have him be the starter and get rid of Carty, our OA goalie as he is one of 4 OA's. The fact that Carty's still getting an equal share of starts (despite average at best play) tells me their being very cautious with his hip. Not in peak starting shape.
