I suppose if you count the gimmicky NHL World Cup, then the year hasn't been a complete disaster.

I judge success by the number of gold medals on all levels. So far I count a grand total of ZERO.

1 tournament remaining to salvage something... a tournament which you consider a good developmental tool for young players and future tournaments. Future tournaments that look to be nothing more than NHL gimmicky World Cups and Ryder Cup formats of Canada v the World or North America v The World. What a crappy world we live in that it has come to this. A far cry from my into to international hockey in '87 with the Piestany Punch up and Canada Cup Lemieux Gretzky edition.

I'm about ready to give up on international hockey and just focus on my favorite NHL teams.

Exactly. At this point there are no real future tournaments outside of WHC. Another Wolrd Cup with gimmick teams? No thanks, for the enterteinment, yeah, that should be good, but nothing else. Olympics without NHL players... well.

World Hockey Championships is at this point the very top of the real international hockey. And it should be treated this way. It is huge tournament in the Europe and lot of Canadians do care about it, I think it is becoming even more popular in Canada, when a lot of star players has started to accept invitations in the last couple of years, and when Canada is unbeatable again.

That's right, 2015 Prague was something else. Such a fantastic tournament. 2016 World Cup is nothing compared to it.

Prague was special. no doubt about that. Something good happens to Team Canada every time the tournament is in Prague. When I'm having a crappy day at work and I'm in need a pick-me-up, I youtube highlights of that tournament more often than I do of Vancouver 2010 and Sid's golden goal.

This year could be even better if a few more (8-12) star players (all countries) decide to show up.

The quality of hockey at the world cup was miles better than at any world championship ever.

Wolrd Cup 16 been very boring.

IIHF 15 in Prague been more intresting.

The "world cup" had a few good games but aside from Canada-USA and Canada-Russia it meant nothing.

A decade from now no one is going to care how Canada beat Europe for the title. There wasn't even a notable celebration in Toronto after it ended.

It's sad that the WHC (never best-on-best) is now the most important tournament we have.

No one cares who won in the WHC 10 years ago either.

+ Russia- NA U-23 :)

But for me IIHF in Prague much better)

I obviously don't count the gimmick tournament, and I do hold it against Renney that he was on board with that idiocy, but other than that nothing disastrous. The WJC performance was a failure but less disappointing than usual, and there hasn't really been anything else to go on. I'm happy with the recent change Hockey Canada made to use the width of the ice instead of the length for young kids. Changes like that will pay dividends down the road.

It will be a long road for this tournament to be taken seriously by many in Canada. Too many decades of this tournament looking like a joke (mainly due to the IIHF) to change it so suddenly. The recent changes to the scheduling do help. The best thing that could help it in terms of appreciation from Canadian fans is increased attention from TSN. Sportsnet has the NHL, but it really is a joke compared to TSN, which dominates the IIHF WC. It is surprising that TSN doesn't talk about this tournament more since it is so heavily invested in it. It will never be like the WJC because the time (during the playoffs instead of during the CHristmas break) sucks, but it should grow with help from TSN.

I think tournament in Paris will be very good too.

SWE,USA and Canada have top roster

Have to say this, the tournament looks more balanced than usual this year. Usually USA has a joke roster, but that isn't the case this year. Sweden sometimes has a joke roster and Canada sometimes (2014) as well, but not this year. Should be decent.

Bettman ans Fasel kill almost all internatioinal tournaments(

Bettman and the owners absolutely turned the 2016 World Cup into a farce and are largely to blame, along with the IOC, for the Olympic tournament likely becoming irrelevant, but as much as it pains me I cannot blame Fasel. The IIHF has done right by international hockey in recent times, and is probably the only entity that comes out of the Olympic issue looking good.

In terms of performance, that team is probably only second to the 2005 WJC team among Canadian teams. A talented team that played even better than its talent.

Hard to think of two more dominant teams in modern Canadian history.

The 2005 juniors never trailed and were never threatened, while the 2015 team only had one bad period (first vs Sweden) the whole tournament.

It had a lot more than just a few games, for example Sweden-North America was arguably the best non-playoff international game ever and one of the best games I have ever seen.

You can't just be blinded by the bias that the tournament had two teams you don't like, and THEREFORE the games didn't offer quality hockey.

Agreed, Sweden-younggunz was a good game. I don't dispute the quality of play.

But unlike real national team games, it had little meaning. Who in Sweden was overly upset by the loss to their rivals born in NA after Oct 1 1992?

Yeah, not surprising to see that Hawks players declined invitations. Wonder if at least Crawford will go. He would be great addition and much needed addition.
