Futa said in his interview before the draft lottery with Sportsnet that in his opinion he didn't think those two were ready to step in either.

It's interesting, because Futa also said in the same interview that the Kings are now trying to sign skill guys, and they previously overlooked guys who "didn't fit in the Kings heavy game."

The Capitals did draft Filip Forsberg at #11 in 2012, and that's a draft that this year's class has been compared to.

It must kill the Caps fans to see him and get heartburn over "Martin Erat'.

Still don't understand why they did that.

And not being as top heavy as last couple of drafts, doesn't mean the first round won't have quality players.

Kings will do fine at 11, but I can see them trading back to a latter part of the 1st and picking up an additional 2nd. They need to try to stock the farm.

And the former GM thought that the Penguins were the "flavor of the month." Maybe his team and their "heavy game" fit that description?

Hextall said the same thing last night , in the presser when asked about Nico or Nolan . And historically, he doesn't like to rush his kids. He did say that whichever player they land, would get an opt at training camp /preseason to show what he has but that wouldn't change his way of thinking.
And Nico, because of his current situation, can go to the AHL, which is a bonus.

No. He cannot. That only applies to players who have never played major junior.

Fitting, Dean would have been the guy that would have made a similar trade!

Its way too late for that. A full rebuild isn't feasible so they might as well move all their chips in to try and get players that are relatively cheap but can play now and that means trading picks and prospects that won't contribute in the next couple of years.

Luc says the window is 5 years, in reality it is probably no more than 3. It may be only two depending on DD. It should be all in or nothing. If it fails at least the kings will really suck and get better picks that would likely shorten the looming rebuild. It's the only route that makes sense moving on from here. Sometimes pulling the goalie works...

You do not mess with Taylor Hall's team at the draft lottery.

Yeah, Hall goes to NJ and the #1 pick follows...

I don't see your rationale here. I don't think trading down in from 11 to a lower seed and picking up an extra pick to bolster a thirsty farm system is a full rebuild. It's getting more young players to fill the gaping holes DL left. And 'all in for nothing', what exactly does that mean? The Kings, as they stand now roster wise' are not a contender , Luc and Blake know that. And picking up cheap used spare parts , that's not a solution. And trading picks and prospects is why there in trouble now. They will bring the new philosophy with them in the off season and try to make this a better team now and going forward.
And a large part of that is the farm system, which is one reason they started signing college players. And most likely are scouting the World Championships

I didn't say trading down was a full rebuild, that comment was a separate thought. I just think re-stocking is pointless. Kings need to literally empty the cupboard for players they can afford to pay and fill holes no matter what the cost in picks/prospects. I also don't think the Kings can't contend. There are no scary good teams out there. Many of the kings best players were either awful this year and/or injured.

A fresh approach next year alone can work wonders.

Thank you. I didn't know you could "loan" players to junior teams. Seems to be subverting the rules.

Seems like a more popular option lately. Julius Honka was the first one I can remember who used this loophole to get loaned to the CHL during his draft year, but being allowed to play in the AHL the following season. Alex Nylander had a similar arrangement, played in the OHL in 2015-16 then the AHL in 2016-17.

I imagine the agents figured out a way around the CHL rule to maximize options.

Love it, anything that weakens the ridiculous cartel known as the CHL.

Beyond ridiculous that a 19 year old has to play a fourth season of junior hockey rather than developing better in the AHL.

But I'm sure the Warren Rychel's and Dale Hunter's of the world will fight hard to get this "loop-hole" closed and then say it's "in the best interest of the kids"

Junior hockey is a business like anything else. They lose their best 18 year old's to the NHL, and they want to keep some of their star power, so they want the top picks that don't make the NHL to at least play another year in junior.

In the end, a little extra time in junior, just like some more games in the AHL, isn't going to hurt players.

But they're okay with granting other players exceptional status (Tavares, McDavid, etc) and take some team's best 15 year-old.

Each NHL team should be granted one exceptional player at a time.

Maybe it's the Owen Sound connection with Futa, but I could see the Kings trading down a few spots and grabbing Nick Suzuki and adding an extra pick.

Just from my limited research regarding the players in this draft, I feel that beyond the top 2 picks, everyone else from 3-15 is sort of a toss up. Some players were ranked lower and then suddenly shot up in the rankings, and vice versa. So the fact that were are no. 11, instead of no. 6 or 8 or whatever it might be, is not a big deal.

I like him at 11 actually. Depends on how many teams are looking at defense.

I think LA ends up with one of Suzuki, Necas, Pettersson, if they go forward.

Outside chance at Rasmussen.

Kostin is interesting. I wonder if he could be another Kucherov/Tarasenko type deal. Don't know that much about him tho.

Years ago, I think one of the NBA Draft commentators described Clippers GM Elgin Baylor as a "veteran of the lottery process" without realizing how solid of an insult that was. Hopefully for Hall, we'll be more competitive shortly.

Valeri Nichushkin seemed to be the popular comparable with Kostin, but he certainly seems like a wild card.

Who do you guys think we take at 11? Any chance we trade down?

Depends a lot who's BPA.
But if La Kings management decides go to goal-scorer options are Tippet and Tolvanen.

If La goes with center options are Rasmussen, Suzuki,Glass and Necas if La is looking center-winger options are Mittelstadt ( if available) and Joni Ikonen ( can play C and RW).
If La is looking for winger options are Vesalainen and Kostin if La is looking defenceman options are Liljegren,Hague,Foote, Makar ( if available) and Valimaki.
