The way Villalta understands the position also shows up in how he moves around the net. Villalta is part of a very small minority of goalies that are set 99% of the time when the puck is in the defensive zone. He does this in order to ensure that no matter what crazy situation pops up he’s ready for it. To go with his strong technical game Villalta also delivers a calm game. He trusts in himself and in what he knows. He knows he doesn’t have to be aggressive in his crease depth because of his above average frame. Another aspect of Villalta’s game that can’t go without being tabled about is his puck tracking. Villalta’s technical skill does not shoehorn him into being a blocking type goalie because of his strong puck tracking skills. He’s quite good at following the puck fully through the shot, screens or quick passes. All this culminates into him having some of the best rebound control (and therefore impact) of his draft class. Rarely will you see a puck be directed into a dangerous area by Villalta.
The biggest aspect of Villalta’s game he’ll need to make improvements in is his overall quickness/explosiveness. It’s fine right now and fits into his style of play. His footwork is effective at getting him set and in position. It just lacks an element of speed. There’s no explosiveness in Villalta’s game to come out and quickly cut down the angle on shooters. Villalta has shown he’s capable of reading the play in those instances he just doesn’t react to them the way most goalies do by getting more aggressive to force the shooter into trying to pick a corner. This is an aspect of Villalta’s game though that he’ll just look at improving as he matures and becomes stronger.

Matthew Villalta is an excellent pick and highly underrated. Props to your scouting staff for being able to pick him out.
