2017 Football Thread III: End of an Eli

You don't need to be on a NY team to get endorsements. The Browns, who already have a decent defense, are immediately better than the Jets by adding Cousins and Saquon Barkley and another impact player from the draft. They gave away so many games last season and should have beaten the Jets. The Jets are such a train wreck at this point that they don't have players good enough to enable them to cut Robbie Anderson and Wrong Way Donahue.

Literally none of that is true. Not one of those statements. Impressive.

The Browns are the worst franchise in pro sports. They've won 1 game in 2 years. They are trash and will be trash.

This is not even wrong. I never said they were good but you have to look beyond their record which you obviously haven't given your remarks. They were in a lot of games which they lost because of inept coaching and QB play (Jets could have moved up 2 or 3 spots in the draft if the Browns didn't blow an easy game to the Jets). The same was truewith the 49ers and look what happened to them once they got Jimmy G.

What in the world does Cleveland offer a QB that any of the listed teams does not when the money is the same?

One, you'd have to live in Cleveland. Two, the endorsements are definitely less (saying otherwise is silly, as its an indisputable fact). Three, you're not in Cleveland. And four, you're not in Cleveland.

If the money is equal, Cleveland is low on the list.
Well, the money isn't equal and the Jets are a complete train wreck - they just don't have any offensive talent to work with. Cousins is going to live in Michigan regardless where he plays. Besides them having an already established team, a big reason for him to play in Minnesota is it's relatively close and there's a tax treaty. You know where else is close to Michigan? Cleveland. Not everyone is as concerned about making every last dollar or a snob about what city they play in. When you get a contract with $90+ million guaranteed, endorsements aren't much of a priority. Plenty of players proved you don't need to play in NY to make money in endorsements if you're a winner. Losers in NY make as much money as losers anywhere else. I don't expect Cleveland is his first choice but I expect that he ranks them higher than the Jets as a place to play.

Why would the money not be equal? The Jets have less cap space, but they are #2 in that regard. It’s almost like you aren’t looking anything up before you post it.

He’d pay taxes in the states he plays. Whether there is a tax treaty or not is largely meaningless. He’d offset his taxes regardless.

All things considered, the money would be better with the Jets regardless of any minor tax differences. Endorsements would MORE than make up any difference.

I don't have the exact stats but I believe Cousins already makes more from endorsements than any player on the Jets. None of the top endorsement deals are with NY players except Eli (whether that's because of 2x superbowl mvp or because he's a manning). OBJ will be there but if he was on the Chiefs he'd be up there too. The notion that you have to play in NY to get big endorsements is an anachronism. You need to be a winner and have the right personality. Being a QB doesn't seem to hurt either.

Right. He has had endorsement deals. In a major city. Washington DC. I could see DC, LA/SF, Boston, and Dallas all having comparable endorsements on the local level.

Cleveland? Is he playing on the Cavs with Lebron? No, right? So, yeah. Being on Cleveland is simply not going to net him anywhere near the level of endorsements as he would get in NYC.

The idea that you simply don't understand how local endorsements work blows my mind. Eli Manning makes a ton on national endorsements. He's top 50 in the world. However, he also makes a ton on the local level, which is far and above what he'd make if he were in some hellhole like Cleveland.

Landry and Gordon make for a nice little pairing for whoever they draft. If you're the Browns you gotta go with Barkley at 1, and which ever QB the Giants don't take at 4 right?

It just depends on their views on the QBs. If you feel one of them is a franchise guy and the others are "eh". you really can't risk losing that franchise guy.

True, but if they like two or three of them enough, they gotta take Barkley.

Totally right, though, very dependent on how they view this QB class.

EDIT - Well, they don't have to, you know what I mean.

Landry in the slot with Gordon and Coleman on the outside. Barkley would be interesting at 1 with one of the QBs at 4, but Crowell is a good RB, so is Duke Johnson. They should probably take Fitzpatrick 1 and a QB at 4. With their 2 or 3, they could grab another RB if they want to.

They are prime to sign one of the FA QBs as a placeholder. Nothing crazy. I doubt someone like McCown goes back there. Could see a Chase Daniel going there and getting the first 4 games before giving way to whoever they draft.

Both the Jets and Browns lost 6 games by less than a TD last year. Statistically their defenses are about even. “They were in close games but blew them” Yes, that’s what bad teams do.

Some pitch they’ll have for him. “Listen Kirk, I know we have won 4 of 48 games here but look past that. That was largely do to player errors, roster mismanagement and bad coaching. You can fix all that”

Browns get their placeholder. Bills get a high 3rd.

I think they Bills are going to try and trade into the top 10 and get one of these QBs to build around.

Holy crap, GM Dorsey is going bonkers for my Browns this afternoon.

In the last hour he's acquired:

– WR Jarvis Landry for 2 picks in the 3-7 rounds (one each the next two years, exact round not known).
– QB Tyrod Taylor for the 65th overall pick in this draft.
– CB Damarious Russell for an unknown return.

Still has the #1, #4, #33, #35, and #64 in this coming draft.

Tyrod and Juice going to be the first tandem to average 1 yard per play through the air an entire season.
Now, now, Landry in the slot with Njoku at TE and Gordon outside is actually pretty frickin' good. Then you've got Coleman who should be solid if he could ever stay healthy. Maybe re-sign Terrelle Pryor who obviously regretted leaving...? That's quite the corps.
