And yet you wanted to have Heponiemi on this team. One Tuulola doesn't make this team big nor skilled, so go ahead, who are the big boys snubbed?

 i know someone would touch that,i thought of mentioning
that in my post, but i thought people would be...you know.

PS. check my team that ive would of picked several pages backwards,
now thats a big and skilled team, yes with smaller guys too.

My line up as of now would be something like:

1. Kuokkanen-Nättinen-Palmu
2. Tolvanen-ARäsänen-Tuulola
3. Vesalainen-Saarela-Koivula
4. Koppanen-Somppi-Heponiemi
13. Borgström

1. Juolevi-Saarijärvi
2. Heiskanen-Välimäki
3. Niemeläinen-ERäsänen
7. Salo

like that other winning team, this team has
everything size,talent,speed,...

Heres the 180cm+ players:

200cm/ 93kg Eemeli Räsänen
197cm/ 93kg Markus Niemeläinen
195cm/ 87kg Joona Koppanen
191cm/ 83kg Olli Juolevi
191cm/ 81kg Henrik Borgström
190cm/ 92kg Kristian Vesalainen
190cm/100kg Otto Koivula
190cm/102kg Eetu Tuulola
189cm/ 88kg Julius Nättinen
188cm/ 91kg Juuso Välimäki
186cm/ 86kg Janne Kuokkanen
184cm/ 84kg Robin Salo
184cm/ 80kg Miro Heiskanen
183cm/ 90kg Aapeli Räsänen
183cm/ 82kg Otto Somppi
180cm/ 91kg Aleksi Saarela

Heres the u 180cm players:

171cm/81kg Petrus Palmu
176cm/65kg Aleksi Heponiemi
178cm/75kg Vili Saarijärvi
178cm/81kg Eeli Tolvanen

These were my picks before the camp roster came up
and before Saarela said no thank you,
comparing this to the team was picked...oh boy.

You mean this one?
"With Puljujärvi:

Kuokkanen-Nättinen-Palmu
Tolvanen-ARäsänen-Puljujärvi*
Vesalainen-Borgström-Tuulola
Koppanen-Somppi-Koivula
Mattila

Juolevi-Saarijärvi
Välimäki-Heiskanen
Niemeläinen-ERäsänen**
Salo
"

Now we know the Puljujärvi case, so he should be 13th forward, so we can minus him and Väyrynen from their respective rosters. A 13 th forward is usually a non-impact guy.

On defense Räsänen is 200 cm 93 kg, whereas Rautanen is 181 cm 76 kg. Jesper Mattila is also on the smaller side with 180/83 and Salo is 184/84. So on D your roster has 23 cm and 18 kg more size, but Räsänen is not as skilled as the others.

On forwards we're changhing Luoto, Ruotsalainen and Björkqvist with Tuulola, Koppanen, and Somppi. Tuulola is big 190/102 compared to 173/82 sized Ruotsalainen. Luoto is 187/84 and Koppanen is 195/87. Somppi is 183/82 and Björkqvist 186/90. Now, leaving Björkqvist out would've been sheer madness. Your forward group would be 22/15 bigger so on totals you'd have 55 cm and 33 kg more size, which would give a team 2,39 cm more medium height and 1,43 kg more medium weight.

But imo no way should Somppi and Koppanen make the team over Björkqvist and Luoto.

Edit. Whoops, totally missed Niemeläinen over Vaakanainen. That does bigger de difference.

Double edit: A guess he didn't mean this. Actually what a waste of post, a guess this can stay here, but don't bother reading it.

Would've liked to see Salo or Parikka instead of Mattila but since he is likely the 7th d-man doesn't really matter.

Pretty good selections. I just think Vehviläinen will ruin our chances for the gold and it seems like he has Rautakorpi's trust for some reason.

It's like that one year when we had Mikael Granlund for the last time and really nice team but the head coach was Raipe, who didn't have enough coaching experience. I feel like it's similar case now with Vehviläinen getting too much trust, thus again one person ruining a nice looking mix.

Vehviläinen is a solid goalie who has had a few unfortunate games here and there. I don't get the hate. He would be my clear choice as the starter. He almost won the U18 championship by himself in the final against USA in 2015, so it's not like he always folds with pressure.

That team looks OK but the goalies are question-mark.
As i mentioned earlier i don't have medal expections but i'll give this team fair chance to prove me wrong.

As a HIFK fan i'm happy Heiskanen is in the team he should be very good if he plays similar like he's done in HIFK.
I'll watch all preliminary round games and expect to see good hockey every game.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

He has been brutal at the WJC.

Would have preferred Vidgren over Väyrynen and Salo over Mattila (added size and strength), but otherwise I'm pretty happy. Has anyone seen Rautanen play this season?

I would've thought Juhola would've been close to make the team. He's been a great gritty 3-4 line forward for Ässät and his style of play suits smaller rinks. I guess he didn't get much to show at games.

Otherwise the team looks good. Goaltending is something that could be a major problem. Pretty sure that Ruusu could be the no.1 goalie as we go forward. Vehviläinen is just having big mental problems or smth. The last time I member he was good was at the U18 when Finland got silver.

Last year's team was 187cm/87kg on average. 183,7cm/83,3kg this year. That's a drastic difference. Funnily enough last year's team was the kind of classic north americam meat n taters team on euro ice and this year it's a classic euro team on NA ice. We'll see if fast and skilled a la Tampa Bay works for team Finland. I terms of ability and play style, the defensemen are the kind that most NHL teams covet, the question is do they get outmuscled. It will be interesting to see how the team performs.

Anybody know what the PK/PP units were in the games?

1st PP was : Kuokkanen - Borgstrom - Vesalainen - Juolevi - Tolvanen
2nd wave was : Koivula - Rasanen - Ruotsalainen - Saarijarvi - Valimaki

I didn't noticed who played on the PK.

So the man who said Markus Ruusu might end up a better talent than Vehviläinen and who was though of as crazy at the time isn't seeming so crazy now? Go figure. Slight sarcasm as Ruusu hasn't been good in Mestis at all, but stats aren't everything its the mental makeup that can predict future success ( see Matt Murray junior stats ) .

Anyways weird they would exclude players like Somppi, Koppanen, Nurmi.

All those guys will be Finland's next years ( 2018) world juniors team in Buffalo.
Finland's hockey association has hired Jussi Ahokas next U20 head coach.

Ahokas was Finland's U18 head coach this past April in Grand Forks.
And as you know we ( Finland) won gold medal in that tournament so it's good to see what Ahokas can do in U20 level.

Also next years team in Buffalo will be much different than this years team.
Juolevi isn't playing world juniors next year.

But Nurmi,Valimaki,Niemelainen,Kuokkanen,Somppi, Tuulola ( Eetu), Makinen,Rasanen,Oksanen, Salo, Koppanen,Jaaska, Luukkonen,Halonen, Vesalainen,Tolvanen, Heiskanen, Koivula and Vaakanainen are all potential names for next years world junior team for Finland.

Of course a lot depends that how many of those guys plays in NHL and does they get released.

Has anyone seen Rautanen play this season?
He looked pretty bad against Canada. Turned the puck over in the 3rd goal. Fumbled the puck into his own net in the 5th goal. Furthermore, Canada generated several scoring chances on power play from Rautanen's side of the ice. I don't understand why Rautakorpi picked this guy, he had better options available.

Would've liked to see Salo or Parikka instead of Mattila but since he is likely the 7th d-man doesn't really matter.
One or two injuries and a suspension, and every D matters a great deal. Just look back at 2006 World Juniors when Finns had only 4 D's left at the very end and Petteri Wirtanen had to convert from forward to defense.

As a draft geek it would've been fun to see Jokiharju on this team instead of Mattila, but I guess I can understand why Rautakorpi selected the more experienced player in this case. In my books Parikka and Mattila are pretty even. Parikka is bigger and stronger than Mattila, while Mattila is slightly smarter and more skilled from these two.

in the end, the selection of Rautanen is the one that baffles me.

Who's centering for Tolvanen in tournament games?.
In pre-tournament games his centers were Väyrynen and was that another Nättinen.

Those combos didn't work and Tolvanen couldn't score.
So why the hell Räsänen and Tolvanen are separated they have played together in U18 WJC's and they play together in Sioux City.
Rautakorpi is total idiot if he don't realize put those two together.

Tolvanen needs a center who can feed him and best option is Räsänen.
Hopefully Tolvanen is this years Laine but without excellent center that won't happen.
