WJC: 2017 Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

Again, it has nothing to do with his skill level -- I'm purely talking style. It's interesting to me that people can watch the same games and end up with wildly different conclusions.

Yup. He is a very active Dman. Loves to carry the puck. He and Lauzon rarely play together for R-N fwiw. They were paired up for the Super Series and I'm sure they could make it work but Myers is far from the stay-at-home type if that is what they are looking for.
 
Pierre-Luc Dubois - Dylan Strome - Julien Gauthier (big bodied 1st line)
Tyson Jost - Mathew Barzal - Nolan Patrick (probably would be the best offensive line)
Sam Steel - Michael McLeod - Taylor Raddysh (speed would kill 3rd pairing D on most teams)
Brett Howden - Nick Roy - Mitchell Stephens (2-way energy)
Daniel Cirelli (plug in anywhere)

Thomas Chabot - Noah Juulsen (All around solid, big minute pair)
Jake Bean - Phillipe Myers (Good offense + aggression)
Jeremy Lauzon - Dante Fabbro (2-way, puck moving)
Sam Girard (pp specialist)

This isn't a star filled team, but if they go for speed they can win.

based on his play last season, I'd have him penciled in a top 4 spot this year as well, or at least contending for that role, but the fact he's only played 3 games this season would change things imo, but we're talking about Hockey Canada here...being the 13OA is rather hefty draft status. The bureaucrats at HC won't make the hard decisions. If things go wrong. Their response to player selection criticism will be "the team had 14 1st. rd. draft picks. They didn't perform."

in his favor, Jake can play RD. with only 2 RD invited, I'm pretty sure Jake can suck at camp and still make the team.

While I will be rooting mightily for Canada I really have an issue with some of the selections. Let's hope they are right and that they learned from last year.....

Very happy that Smith and Mascherin were not invited.

Smith is very much a hot head and takes stupid penalties. I love his game though.

Mascherin is just a one trick pony. His shot. Deadly but that is the only asset to his game.
 
I think Merkley has a shot...was one of the final cuts last year along with Juulsen and Lauzon

Strome and Raddysh with big games last night. They weren't exactly up against some stiff competition, but still...that's the chemistry HC needs to push to see if they can carry it over from league play to elite international tournaments.

I'm not a big fan of league chemistry being applied to international tournaments, other than very long term examples like Getzlaf-Perry. It doesn't hurt if those two work well together though. Too many examples like Strome-Ritchie, Scheifele-Camara, Scheifele-Pearson, Hall-Henrique-Nemiisz from recent memory. Luckily in this case both can seemingly make it on their own merit. I haven't seen Strome yet, but his ten points in three games is at least encouraging.

That's where I fall too. Generally it doesn't work out but Raddysh absolutely deserves to be there and I have him with Strome just for that case along with the familiarity to start the pre-tournament. Who knows what lines will emerge after a couple exhibition games.

Yeah, I find that league chemistry never works well when one of the pair is a decent league player but is not a WORLD class player. International play just features more talent on a compressed amount of teams and one of the duo is just clearly in over his head on the world tournament stage and it does not end well at all usually . Hopefully this time it could be a case of both players being capable though.

We'll find out soon enough what Raddysh is. If the chemistry is there with Strome and they can carry it over, then go with that, if not, then leave him behind. Hs only other international experience at u17 wasn't anything to write home about, but you're right, 9 out of 10 times it doesn't work...this could be the 1 instance in which it does.

Yeah, I remember Mackinnon and Drouin being on separate lines (or in Mackinnon's case used as a 13th forward at points). I think it should be accounted for, but Raddysh has clearly earned an invite to this camp on his own merit. The fact he has a teammate at the camp who is a lock to make it, is an added bonus.
 
Thought I would post this though. I personally think Joyce is one of the better-connected writers when it comes to covering the prospect beat, which has an overlap with the WJC. Here is a new piece by him focusing on the Canadian goaltending situations (with comments from an NHL goalie consultant/scout) and him tackling who could be made available from the NHL.
