Wonder if JR kicks the tires on Shattenkirk now that Rangers may not be interested

He only plays the right side? Which I guess wouldnt make sense with Schultz here, unless his contract gets stupid and they deal his rights

Eh. He wants to be a #1, which I would not want him to be here. He's going to command 6 mil+. No thanks

I'm starting to worry about Schultz $$$$ because his agent makes a good point. He came back last year to build on his 2016 playoffs. He gave the Pens a sweetheart deal. Now he should be fairly paid. And you know what.. that's true. He gambled. The gamble paid off. He should get term and money. No special deals.

My issue is that his time in New York was a pretty tiny sample size compared to the rest of his NHL career, where he's been somewhere between a #6 and #7.

He was a #6/7 the same way Stralman was a 6/7D before going to Tampa.

4-6 years at 4.8-5.2M a season.

I've thought he'd get a raise for a while now and his playoffs did not deter the fact. I don't think it's anything to really worry about there. Could he get 5.5-6 elsewhere? Maybe 5.75 but Pit is such a good fit I'd be shocked if he left.

Kunitz earned himself another year of torturing Penguins fans with his Game 7 performance in the Conference Finals.

I still think he signs for $4.5 mil over 4

Any chance of a Kunitz re-sign should have staggered drunkenly out the door the moment the Reaves trade finalized.

At the same time this organization believed in him, and along with Martin and Gonch, brought him back from the garbage bin. The chances of him rebounding elsewhere were fairly slim, IMO. We gave him 2 Cups and a chance for more and he loves the city and team.

I think it's still a compromise, meet in the middle situation.

We have leverage with Schultz being an RFA. I'm thinking we'll get something like a 5x5 deal. But he needs to be a #2 at that price. I think he is.

The UFA dmen i'd go after are Folin, wiericoch, and Postma. None are top 4 dmen. But provide solid depth and can play in the NHL and not cost much.

Shattenturd is a #4 - #5 d-man and a PP point former that I want zero part of.

People, we watched this guy play 7 games a couple of months ago.

One guy put it best. He's a #1 on the PP and in the offensive zone. He's closer to bottom pairing at everything else.

I'm not averse to giving Daley another two years. He was "off" after coming back from his original injury, but he was fantastic when he came back the 2nd time in the playoffs.

I've said this before, but with Tanger coming back, how bad off are we with:

Letang-Dumo
Cole-Schultz
Maatta-Daley
Ruh

?

I'm all for gunning for offense. One more bona fide top six winger instead of tire patches like Wilson makes the team nearly unstoppable. They'd obviously need a 3C, but after that, the old man's work should be done.

Duchene rumors are most likely ********, but he's versatile and young enough to make giving up assets, even a Sprong, something I'd seriously consider.

I guess this is the right place for this?

Summary:
Schultz wants to stay
He likes the players, coaches and organization here
His agent thinks he should be paid appropriately after signing a prove-it contract last year and proving it
There have already been "good discussions"

Tory Krug comes up as a comparable contract.

Edit: this may be old news as apparently it was ripped off from this Jason Mackey article written 2 days ago. Yikes. http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/...ing-a-long-term-contract/stories/201706260140

If we aren't able to find a suitable 3C that's going to give the offensive production we ideally want would we be better off getting the 2 best 4C types we can rather than overpaying for a less than ideal 3C?

Spend the money on PK and FO to fill those gaps.

We shouldn't be short of offensive production from the rest of the roster.

And you never know you might catch lightning in a bottle with whoever ends up on the 3rd Line. Heck the thought of something like Hags - Brian Boyle - Phil as a 3rd line would be interesting to see.

It'll be interesting to see if JR is willing to commit to serious term to get the cap number under 5. We're gonna be rolling with him for the rest of our window anyway. I doubt we come across a better second pairing offensive D for that money.

Yeah I don't see the need to make a big move on defense. Nor do I see it being that difficult to replace Maatta's minutes. Schlemko and Methot went for dirt cheap. Target Miller for a pick if need be. MDZ and Kulikov in free agency. Daley if he'll sign for short term.

I think we're better off going big and having the ability to overwhelm teams with three legit lines again than paying Bonino a mil or so less than Duchene.
