According to story in TIOPS, the Pens view Gagner more as a wing who can play center than a center who plays on the wing,

Gagner looks interesting on the surface but he doesn't PK and he doesn't win faceoffs, which are 2 thing we really need our 3C to do.

Duchene is exciting to think about if he does pan out to be a good fit beyond just the presence on the ice...

But the price better not be Maatta, Sheary AND a first... Maatta and Sheary alone should be more than enough with their age and the fact no defensemen is coming back, maybe throw a third in. If we're talking Duchene + D prospect, then yeah we can start talking draft picks +Pouliot as a sweetener.

Maatta is someone that makes a Duchene deal look pretty legitimate - but we still then have to find a replacement for Maatta in the lineup. I'm not one of his ultra-proponents here, but he still plays top 4 minutes.

The way this works cap wise is that Duchene makes 6M for 2 more years, Maatta is making 4 and Sheary is set to make 2.5 - so we'd come out ahead.

Sheary + Maatta + 1st is the price I'd pay for Duchene. No Sprong, no Guentzel. If that doesn't do it, and Pouliot doesn't tip the scale, then no deal.

I agree. I'd consider including Jarry or Gustavson if that helps. If I'm JR, I refuse to move a cost controlled potential star winger for a 6 million dollar third center for two years. However, I do appreciate that Duchene would be a dramatic upgrade on Bonino, his speed fits the identity, the faceoff ability is something that is definitely needed. I'd be very interested. But Sprong or Guentzel are off the table entirely. If they can't live with a top four d, a 50 point winger, and a first, then oh well. If they want more, they're trying to milk us for all we're worth, and frankly we shouldn't put up with that crap from Sakic.

It's not necessarily that simple though because it would have to be Duchene @ 6 and add the potential Maatta replacement who is not likely to make 500k or less. Pens have cap room for it to be sure, but my concern is always going to be trading a D from a weak corp to get another F for a strength. Duchene is good enough that you consider it an exception, but you better have track on a top 4 d who makes 5 or under in that case.

TIOPS hasn't been correct since like 2007. So take that for what it's worth. I would say they are about as accurate as Eklund at this point.

Wasn't Fehr signed for this year? Maybe should have held onto him. He played better at centre than wing and he's a much better option as a 4th line centre than Rowney.

Beat you to it a couple pages ago. One user said Toronto doesn't have much use for him..... Maybe re-acquire!

NJD Prospect Alexander Kerfoot will likely become a FA. Would be awesome to steal another prospect from a rival. Never hurts to add another NHL-ready guy either.

No you're right - and I was a bit misleading in phrasing it that way.

Not false logic though, we would use the money reserved for Bonino for that replacement defense..as Duchene would be replacing him at 3C and we wouldn't be bringing back Bones at a low enough cost to justify him at 4C.

I said that I didn't see him in Toronto's plans. I believe they grabbed him off waivers and played him one single game last year right?

His salary is only 2M.. I don't know what they're using him for this coming year.

RNH is probably a decent target. His contract is the exact same deets as Duchene I think and we all know Chiarelli can be...persuaded to take lesser returns than what it sounds like Sakic wants.
