Is there a big difference? The job of the player safety office is to minimize the occurrence and impact of dangerous hits. This is a dangerous hit. Sergachev was fortunate to escape without major injury. You can't convince players to avoid knee on knee hits if you can't convince players to avoid playing chicken like this. And this is coming from a fan that has enjoyed watching Brown demolish opponents with open ice hits for over a decade. I get what he was trying to do. He's just going to have to get out of the habit of still going for the hit when he's gonna miss.

I completely agree with the second half of what you wrote. I just think Player safety has to hand out punishment for actual penalties committed. And the difference between a knee to knee hit and a trip on the danger spectrum to a players health is huge. Despite of what apparently 90% of nhl fans think from what I've read over the last couple days, I don't think Dustin Brown is anywhere close to a dirty player. He has been such an active physical player for so long and with minimal discipline. It's hard to play with an edge for that long without getting into any trouble.

Did you know...

Joe Thornton and Corey Perry have been suspended just as many times (if not more so) than Dustin Brown has?

League suspends Ducks' Perry for 4 games

I find it funny that Ducks and Sharks fans go around accusing Brown of being the dirtiest player in the league when they have players who have delivered far worse hits that resulted in long term injuries.

Totally. And some people on the main board compare him to Torres and Burrows. Are you kidding me?

Those homer glasses must be very tinted. Remember when Sharks fans defended Torres or Ducks fans defended Perry and his "oops, little ol' me didn't me to do that" antics? Hilarious.

Intent matters a lot and I think that's why Brown has been relatively unscathed so far (despite the invented 'rap sheet' that only involves a couple of actual incidents). Most of his issues stem from spur of the moment decisions on missed hits. That's a far cry from a spear or Burrows chasing a dude down to tackle and knee him. They're not premeditated or retaliatory. No one wants to admit that though.

The hole in net is bigger than their issues on defense. They need a goalie in the worst way.

Griess and Halak have a combined Save percentage of under .900. That's god awful.

Not sure how why I typed D...meant to say whole in net. Their D is pretty average.

Yes, but you're leaving out all the times Brown SHOULD have been suspended but wasn't becasue "Bettman" and "Hollywood" and and and according to InternetJabroniX. It's in the thousands...

My favorite was several people cited the sykora hit in the 2012 SCF as dirty as well as an elbow on Pietrangelo that never happened.

I get people hating Brown, but people extending as hard as they can to invent fiction to hate him only proves how effective he is.

This hit. THIS. hit. Suddenly being touted as dirty/suspendable. I can't restrain my laughter.

And this one was being sold as an 'elbow to the head' without question by anyone

I'm not one to defend Brown when he crosses the line but some of the lengths people will go to in order to create outrage are laughable and proof that he's a powerful influence on the game.

If the Kings never win their Cups, Brown is still a scrappy darling of the league. People loved him pre-2012.

I remember a poll on HF, must’ve been around 2007 or so, that voted Parise and Brown as the two most popular up and coming players.

Too long didn't watch.

@ 1:30 the discussion is that Bob McKenzie stated there's a 0% chance of doughty going to the leafs.
Dreger then says he thinks it's 99.9% that Doughty is NOT going to the leafs.

Real time reaction of Leafs fans upon hearing this:

I'm sure there will be a lot of "well of course he'll say that" and "smokescreen, he's coming home" and "it's better that he says he's not because it probably means he is!"

Oh my god, it's the trade board all over again, bet the started a new thread based on this one already.

I've seen like 10 different permutations of MaxPac for Vilardi and every one of them turns into some sort of bullshit "we're doing you a favor" used car pitch.

Edit: yep, that article delivers...Gaborik, Vilardi, 1st, 2nd, and Amadio for MaxPac. Similar to the trade board where they try to 'sneak' one in there with Amadio. GTFO.

Editx2: Jesus Christ what are these people smoking, "Pac → Vilardi, Clague, Gaborik and a first is more palatable I guess"

Did Max Pacioretty turn into Malkin overnight?

Considering that Rychel said one of the major reasons he even traded Vilardi is that he feels he could very likely be in the NHL next year. Trading him would be one of the worst moves we could make. It's not like Rychel doesn't have a relationship with our front office having played with them.
