It's still very early but yes Brynas, Frolunda and Vaxjo all won but in OT and SO so they only get 2pts and they were all trailing in their game. I still think Frolunda is a serious contender to reach the final. Today the game between Davos and Vaxjo will be very interesting to watch.

They should, right? Esbjerg is pretty much a running joke. It should be the easiest team to beat out of all 32.

The DEL teams have definitely been a positive surprise. I've considered the league to be a step below.

If anything, at this point I'd say that the SEL teams have been quite the disappointment.

Trinec is a very good czech club, it will be very interesting to see who gets thru between HV,Trinec and Mannheim.

HV71 always start slow. They got beat badly by Frölunda last week. 8-1 was the final score. I'd temper expectations for the German teams. IFK Helsinki, ZSC Lions are very good teams. OT/Shootout win is hardly a disappointment. Also, The Austrians still have a ways to go. Beating Salzburg convincingly doesn't make you a contender.

You have a point there Slimmy, still a lot of hockey to be played, I hope one of the DEL clubs make it thru, stay tuned

The current IFK Helsinki isn't something I'd describe as "a very good team", to be perfectly honest. And the only wins being in OT/SO for clubs of a league that should be a clear step above the others is rather disappointing at least to me.

As for Tappara...

Tappara's Liiga preseason record so far:
vs Ilves 5-1 w
vs HIFK 4-1 w
vs Sport 6-3 w

Undefeated, every single match absolutely dominant. The Salzburg game isn't the only one I am going by. I guess we'll see how Wolfsburg is going to do against them.

Here's some preliminary Liiga team(ones that participate in CHL) power level estimations using something called Game Score in case some of them are unfamiliar, with the first number being the amount of players in top 80(f)/50(d) and then total Game Score factor something:

Forwards:

Tappara 10 (14,8)
JYP 8 (11,6)
TPS 7 (11,2)
HIFK 6 (8,0)
KalPa 5 (4,9)

Defensemen:

Tappara 6 (7,4)
HIFK 6 (5,9)
TPS 3 (4,6)
JYP 3 (3,8)
KalPa 2 (3,0)

Goalies unfinished but apparently the only CHL teams in the top 5 would be something like:

Tappara
HIFK
JYP

Credit's not mine and this is taken from ICE's post on Jatkoaika.

True, basicly having a EHT Team Finland caliber team does, and probably makes them the biggest favorite at this point. By the way, how are we using the word "contender" in this scenario? The way I see things, every SHL, Liiga or NLA team is a contender in the sence that it wouldn't be a shock to see any of them win, some more likely than than the other of course.

In Jyväskylä attendance was 3888, all the seats sold out and standing room tickets weren't in sale until match day.

Also for Finns, MTV will air 3 games for free on Sub and the first one is tonight's game between Bern and TPS with Mertaranta doing play-by-play.

this might be a first surprise of the season. Cardiff in lead 0-2 against HC Liberec after 1st period.

Mountfield should be embarrass, that's what happens when you don't respect your opponent!!! But kudos for Micheal Garnett he was very impressive in the win.

Vaxjo with a big win versus Davos on the road, Fasth was very good for them, Vaxjo in first place in their group.

Bern looks like the team to beat in group F, TPS looks very weak this season, or maybe the coach isn't playing his best line-up, if so shame on him!!!

Kometa is a solid team, watch out for them, I think they finish 1st in their group, so far so good.

No surprise so far in group H Frolunda and Zurich will qualify for the knockout stage.

Mountfield does not respect the league, more likely in my opinion. kudos for Nottingham players and their aggresive style of play... that is exactly what cze teams do not need at all stages...

Kometa manager is a person who said CHL is not the priority, but... also he said, we were lucky in the drawn...

No team from the biggest hockey countries takes this as the number one priority (over their national leagues), but as is evident by the games, everyone takes it seriously now, which is good. The finnish sides have stated that the group stage is financially break even, getting to the play-off stage means profit. Winning this whole thing would probably mean like closer to a seven digits profit. Good money for any team in this tournament.

Well, the only game you used as reference was the Salzburg one. Just don't think it's much of a measuring stick. That is all.

I agree.

Lot's of talk now about CHL lead that they want to have and "Must have" KHL participate in CHL in future.

How will the HIFK guy Everi feel, who is the reason Jokerit is not already in CHL. HIFK terminated that single handidly few years back, everi commenting Publicly that "We do not want to play Jokerit because we will lose like women", or was it exactly that way, well, something that basically meant that anyway and blocked Jokerit from participating. Everi also said that it is impossible that Jokerit will play in CHL, now he will eventually be walked over like a door matt.

Jokerit would tear HIFK and show who's king of Helsinki. That is what they're afraid in HIFK.
