Robbed? Oh come on, they would not be top 6 forwards or top 4 Ds or top 2 goaltenders. We are talking about being "robbed" of 4th line players?

If anything Team Canada is very happy about this, as finally they will have a venue to evaluate the young-lings between 20-23. The Olympics are what matters. These players will be allowed in their national teams for the Olympics.

For the US it's very different, I think Eichel would be pretty high up in their roster. (Even Matthews).

The point is we're being denied the use of our best players and for no good reason. The NHL could have said that Canada and USA can pick their best roster and that the Mickey Mouse U-23 team could have what's left.

No one wants to see McDavid, McKinnon, Eichel or Gaudreau on the U-23 over their national squad.

And at this point the NHL's participation at the Olympics is no sure thing, making this "world cup" all the more awful.

Grasping at straws you are. I'm terribly excited by this U-23 team.

Canada's depth forwards and defencemen have been the difference in tournaments before. The logic you've applied could easily have been applied to Toews and Doughty in 2010, for instance. The Americans will also obviously miss Gaudreau quite a bit.

Agreed. All I am saying here is this: this is not the Olympics. This is a NHL sponsored tournament to sell the game and their brand. The real "pure" competition will remain the Olympics, in the meantime, it's about having a tournament filled with competitive teams. And really there is little worry for Canada to miss anyone on the U-23 (historically, they usually wait until the players are a bit older), there is a much bigger impact on the US as a "rising" nation.

I agree that the tournament has limited value, but that is primarily because of the very existence of this team and the other gimmick teams. Past Canada/World Cups were legitimate best on bests at least. Canada likely won't miss more than 2 players at this point in time, but historically Canada has relied on players 23 and under quite a bit.

How is it grasping at straws? Some NHL exec a few months back said he hopes the world cup will replace the olympics, so it's far from certain that a real best-on-best event will exist in the future. If the olympics remain with NHL participation then I couldn't care less about the WC, but as it stands its a threat to the international game.

And yes I'm also excited to see McDavid, Ekblad and McKinnon have the opportunity to play against Canada. Who wouldn't be? If only Canada has been denied the use of Crosby, Toews and Doughty in 2010 by some U-23 team, maybe the Vancouver games wouldn't have been so dull.

Not just some executive - deputy commissioner Bill Daly,

Imagine how fondly the 1987 Canada Cup would be remembered with Mario Lemieux leading the North American Young Gunz!

I would say because we already have the Olympics every 4 years, the fact that the WCH is a gimmick doesnt matter to me as much.

The Canada Cup was big because its the only time we got to see Red Army vs NHL guys. But now its not the case

But yes you are right, traditionally this would hurt Canada. This year it wouldnt because of how stacked 90-92 age groups are + the 85 age group's last hurrah + the greatest Canadian player since Mario

This team will be exciting, and outside of team USA, I hope these kids smoke everyone's ass!

Here is my team right now:

Johnny Gaudreau (USA) - Connor McDavid (Canada) - Sean Monahan (Canada)
Max Domi (Canada) - Jack Eichel (USA) - Nathan Mackinnon (Canada)
Alex Galchenyuk (USA) - Dylan Larkin (USA) - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Canada)
Brandon Saad (USA) - Sean Couturier (Canada) - Boone Jenner (Canada)
Auston Matthews (USA)

Shayne Gostisbehere (USA) - Aaron Ekblad (Canada)
Seth Jones (USA) - Jacob Trouba (USA)
Morgan Rielly (Canada) - Dougie Hamilton (Canada)
Ryan Murray (Canada)

John Gibson (USA)
Connor Hellebuyck (USA)
Matt Murray (Canada)

This team has a lot of skill, a very mobile defense, and a few horses that could surprise in net...don't count these kids out by any means.

Just missing the cut: J.T. Miller (USA), Jonathan Huberdeau (Canada), Sam Bennett (Canada), Vincent Trocheck (USA), Mitch Marner (Canada), Jake McCabe (USA) Matt Dumba (Canada), Noah Hanifin (USA), Colton Parayko (Canada), Cody Ceci (Canada),

Note: Auston Matthews will make this team. Not a chance in hell, this #1 overall pick who already will have 1 full season under his belt against men will get skipped out here. He would be in the NHL right now if not for 2 days late for the draft, he will make this team and be a factor as well as he is on the same level as Eichel is.

Not seeing many Shayne Gostisbehere in lineups, at this point he plays a top 4 role and tops the power play unit. Simply too dynamic to leave off, he will be a big factor here.

This team might be competitive against Finland, Czechs, and 'Europe' but are gonna get it handed to them by Can, US, Swe and Rus. I don't think there will really be a surprise there at all. They only have 2 forwards who at the present imo are/would be ppg at the NHL level over a full season in Gaudreau and McDavid and a bunch around the .75 range. Where if you look at Canada they would have like 6+ and the ones that aren't are absolutely elite defensively or in another role. And forwards are this team's strong point. Not a single defenseman I would say is an elite #1. Ekblad and Jones are the closest but they aren't quite there yet. Again, can't hold a candle to Canada, Sweden or USA. It might be cool to see some "what ifs" like maybe McD and Eichel could have some crazy chemistry and I personally think they would complement each other well, but not realistic to think they have any chance of finishing above 4th-5th. Hopefully they scrap this team for future tournaments and just let the ones that can, play with their national teams

You mean Morgan Rielly. Mike Reilly is American, but I do think you meant Morgan (country and last name spelling correct)

This is pretty close to what I would pick. Max Domi is for me the only guy I might exclude (adding Huberdeau on). Domi brings a dimension that Huberdeau doesnt, but it will be interesting to see how Domi closes out the year. That will be key if he wants to be on this team.

Gaudreau-McDavid-MacKinnon
Huburdeau-Eichel-Monahan
Larkin-RNH-Blandisi
Saad-Couturier-Miller
Domi

Rielly-Ekblad
Gostisbehere-Hamilton
Theodore-Jones
Parayko

Gibson
Hellebuyck
Murray

hahahaha good catch, yes I meant Morgan

I can not believe you guys are actually excited about team North America. This idea is so bad Jar Jar binks should be there mascot.

Since you guys like this U-24 team, I was thinking the whole tournament should be made up teams.
Team African-American
Team Over 40
Team Simpson's (ALL PLAYERS WITH Simpson's character names. Skinner, lovejoy, Burns)
Team concussion (ALL concussed players)
Team Over 6 foot 4
Team under 5 foot 7
Team raised with divorced parents

Discuss which team you think will win this tournament?

If you think this sounds crazy. This is how crazy you guys sound.

My opinion on 16 players, who will be selected in roster before 1st March.

Gibson, Heliback

Ekblad, Hamilton, Gostisbeher, Jones

Mcdavid, Eichel, Couturier, Monahan, Gaudreau, Saad, Larkin, Mackinnon, Huburdeau, RNH

You may be exaggerating but I pretty much agree.

On the other hand, I would have totally been on board if they did the following:

Team North America
Team Europe
Team Former USSR
Team Scandinavia
Team... Asia?

:sarcasm:

My best guess would be something like this:

Larkin- McDavid- MacKinnon
Gaudreau- Monahan- Eichel
Domi- Nugent-Hopkins- Saad
Huberdeau- Couturier- Jenner
Matthews

Gotisbehere- Ekblad
Rielly- Jones
Murray- Trouba
Hamilton

Gibson
Hellebuyck
Murray

On the bubble: Galchenyuk, Miller, Trocheck, Parakyo, Hanifin, Dumba, Beaulieu

This is my final selection for the North American U24 Team, before the first roster is officially named:

First line
BRANDON SAAD - CONNOR MCDAVID - NATHAN MACKINNON

If they find chemistry together, look out. What I find the most promising here is that all of them are both good passers and good scorers, and none of them is shy of being a bit more physical. If this line works up to its potential, it will help the team extremely. MacKinon complements McDavid's speed and skills nicely, while Saad adds the needed experience and also solid defense.

Second line
JOHNNY GAUDREAU - SEAN MONAHAN - JACK EICHEL

If your team has a player that is currently #7 in NHL scoring in its second line, it's a good sign. The Flames' duo should provide some experience and instant chemistry, which will help a bit of an un-experienced, but very talented, player like Jack Eichel who fits here well as a RW.

Third line
AUSTON MATTHEWS - RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS - MARK SCHEIFELE

As an 18 year old playing with big boys, Matthews' 1.24 ppg (24g, 42pts in 35gms) is 2nd best in the elite Swiss league, only behind a well known former NHLer P-M. Bouchard. Auston Matthews is a generational talent and to not even consider him for this team is not that far from being as laughable as it would've been with McDavid a year ago. It will be interesting to see what he can do with the US team at the senior world championship in Moscow this May.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Mark Scheifele give this primarily two-way line some defensiveness and experience (RNH is playing his 5th NHL season now). Matthews could potentially add TOP skill that would make this line that much more interesting.
Somehow "sheltering" Matthews in this third line seems the best thing for him if he's gonna make the team.

Fourt line
BOONE JENNER - SEAN COUTURIER - JEAN-GABRIEL PAGEAU

A pure shut-down line with energy, physicality, defensive effort, and players that can kill penalties. Pageau is the leader in shorthanded goals and by far the most used penalty-killer/forward in Ottawa. You won't find any other player in the NHL, available for this team, that is used by his team so much for this type of situation, besides maybe Bo Horvat in Vancouver. Jenner scored 22 goals so far this season, which is quite good, considering that players like Tarasenko, Stamkos, Crosby, Pavelski, or Duchene have 25-30. Couturier is a must. He proved himself in a shut-down role for Team Canada at the last year's golden WHC. His line did an awesome job when facing some Russian super-stars in the gold-medal game.

Defense

MORGAN RIELLY - AARON EKBLAD
An argument could be made that Ekblad is already an elite defenceman, or at least, near-elite. His exceptionally advanced game for a 19 year old will help this team big time. Morgan Rielly provides great puck movement and supporting cast for forwards.

RYAN MURRAY - SETH JONES
Both play more than 22 minutes per game and now they're together in Columbus. A good, balanced overall pair that should be solid at both ends.

COLTON PARAYKO - DOUGIE HAMILTON
Again, good overall pair that should complement each other well. I hope we see something more from Parayko in the playoffs, it would certainly give him, and therefore even this team, a good experience. Nothing is given here though. There is a lot of other options and one or both of them can easily be relegated to the 7th spot, or even out of the team.

Goaltenders

JOHN GIBSON - CONNOR HELLEBUYCK
What was a weak spot for this team has suddenly improved. John Gibson has the best statistics of all Ducks goalies (.917Sv%, 2.10 GAA, also 4 shutouts), while Anaheim has been spreading the time mainly among him (26 games), and Andersen (32). The perfect scenario would be Gibson somehow getting the nod when the playoffs starts. Hellebuyck has the most starts (26) of the three goalies that have played for the Jets this season with a .918Sv% and 2.34 GAA and 2 shutouts. Among Western Conference goalies that have played 20+ games, Hellebuyck is 5th in Sv%, Gibson 8th (from 22 goalies). With the same measures, Gibson is the best in the Western Conference in GAA, and third best in the NHL. Hellebuyck also provides some international experience - see Wikipedia:
Hellebuyck was chosen by the United States to play at the 2015 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships.Hellebuyck would backstop Team USA to a Bronze Medal in the tourney. Hellebuyck posted a record of 7–1–0 with a pair of shutouts during his eight tournament games. He would also finish with a 1.37 goals-against average and a .948 saving percentage. His seven wins tied a U.S. record for most in a single tournament set in 1939.

Extra skaters

SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE - D
His offensive production can't be denied. He should make the team at least as a power-play expert. The sample-size here is nothing big though. It would help to see him play for the States at the World Championships.

DYLAN LARKIN - LW/C
There are always some tough decisions to be made when projecting such a talented team with many deserving players. I think, that out of all the young forwards in the NHL, including Max Domi, Anthony Duclair, Sam Bennett, or Sam Reinhart; Dylan Larkin is the one who deserves to be on this team probably the most, and I also think that at least one of them should definitely be on the team. Larkin is the best to me right now and that's why I picked him. He can play in the 3rd line with Nugent-Hopkins. He adds speed and the young, hungry spirit.

MATT MURRAY - G
Last season, Murray had .941Sv% and 1.58 GAA with 12 shutouts in 40 games in the AHL. This season it's not much worse. With 2.11 GAA and .931Sv% he's second in the AHL in both categories.

Just missed:

JACOB TROUBA, CODY CECI, DARNELL NURSE, MATT DUMBA - ALEX GALCHENYUK, JONATHAN HUBERDEAU, MAX DOMI, SAM BENNETT, VINCENT TROCHECK, BO HORVAT, SAM REINHART
It's pretty clear to see that Huberdeau, the second leading scorer among the Panthers, Max Domi, the leading scorer of the Arizona Coyotes, and Galchenyuk, who had 26 points in first 39 games for Montreal, are the biggest omission. From various reasons, I chose basically Larkin over Huberdeau, Scheifele over Galchenyuk, and Matthews over Domi, but I can see the experience or current play weigh in and lean towards Huberdeau and Galchenyuk, or Domi. It's tough to make a team that has all the stuff needed for a win. Unfortunately, there is no room for all the mentioned forwards, and you can't just pick the 12 most skilled ones. But, let that speak for how strong this team will be.

In terms of defensemen, I find all of the mentioned above somewhat close to make the team. Trouba is experienced and kills penalties a lot in Winnipeg; Nurse adds some physicality, Ceci plays regularly the PK in Ottawa and deserves a look, and Dumba is getting really good in Minnesotta. If I had to guess, I would think that Ceci and Trouba are the closest of them to make the team.

My appreciation to everyone who read at least a part of this

I completely agree wit your lineup, except that I think Gaudreau could be on the first line with McDavid and Mac, It would be a really great speed show and skill line. Moving saad down to the second line with Mony and Jack would be a skillful yet gritty line that can definately put the puck in the net, yet this may be a little bias from a flames fan

Larkin- McDavid - Eichel
Gaudreau - Monahan -Mackinnon
Huberdeau -Couturier - Saad
Bennett- Nuge - Jenner
Reinhart

Parayko -Ekblad
Mo. Rielly -Hamilton
Jones - Trouba
Ghost (PP QB too)

Gibson
Helle
Murray

I think the whole concept is absurd... but here goes.

Huberdeau (Canada) - McDavid (Canada) - Nugent-Hopkins (Canada)
Gaudreau (USA) - Eichel (USA) - Mackinnon (Canada)
Galchenyuk (USA) - Larkin (USA) - Monahan (Canada)
Saad (USA) - Couturier (Canada) - Jenner (Canada)
Domi (Canada)

Morgan Rielly (Canada) - Ekblad (Canada)
Jones (USA) - Trouba (USA)
Gostisbehere (USA) - Pareyko(Canada)
Murray (Canada)

Gibson (USA)
Matt Murray (Canada)
Subban (Canada)

The point is we're being denied the use of our best players and for no good reason. The NHL could have said that Canada and USA can pick their best roster and that the Mickey Mouse U-23 team could have what's left.

No one wants to see McDavid, McKinnon, Eichel or Gaudreau on the U-23 over their national squad.

And at this point the NHL's participation at the Olympics is no sure thing, making this "world cup" all the more awful.

Grasping at straws you are. I'm terribly excited by this U-23 team.

Pretty much this, guys not liking the format are trying to find any way to make the 2 non national teams less competitive.

It's a unique format and seeing McDavid and Crosby go head to head is exciting.

not as exciting as seeing the 7th and 8 best teams in the world get out shot 50 something and hang on with a goaltender...........

Since you guys like this U-24 team, I was thinking the whole tournament should be made up teams.
Team African-American
Team Over 40
Team Simpson's (ALL PLAYERS WITH Simpson's character names. Skinner, lovejoy, Burns)
Team concussion (ALL concussed players)
Team Over 6 foot 4
Team under 5 foot 7
Team raised with divorced parents

Discuss which team you think will win this tournament?

If you think this sounds crazy. This is how crazy you guys sound.

team sour grapes is missing some prime candidates for that team.
