People are putting Backes over T Johnson and Stepan?

After the disaster that was Sochi no way is Team USA going with grinders and checking forwards again. Lombardi is picking the most skilled players possible. The lines should look like this:

Max Pacioretty-Tyler Johnson-Phil Kessel
JVR-Joe Pavelski-Patrick Kane (If not a rapist)
Zach Parise-Derek Stepan-Blake Wheeler
Nick Folingo-Ryan Kesler-Kyle Okposo
Extras: Oshie, Stastny, Krieder

Ryan Suter-John Carlson
Ryan McDonagh-Kevin Shattenkirk
Justin Faulk-Cam Fowler
Extras: Yandle, Byfuglien

Cory Schnieder
Johnathan Quick
Jimmy Howard

i agree with just about everything you said and love those lines.

John Tortorella is the head coach.

I can see USAH is taking this tournament as seriously as the NHL. What an uninspired choice.

Haha I got a good laugh out of that. But the USA Hockey brass are usually Torts built teams. Shot blocking, hustle, defense - the USA Hockey way if you ask me.

perhaps USAH wants to do him a solid and resuscitate his career after the Vancouver debacle... sort of like what Wayne did for Bertuzzi at the '06 Olympics. although that didn't end well for Hockey Canada.

Very odd move to go to Torts for the coaching job. I guess he will have lots of time to work out things and scout players though since he's not coaching in the NHL.

kind of a surprising choice I have to say. real surprised because I was pretty sure he was done. if they do well, perhaps people start answering his calls so that might be his motivation, but i'm not sure it will be the players.

I wasn't planning on watching but now I am intrigued. Up until the "moral-victory" against the Kings the Torts-coached Canucks were actually looking pretty good. After that it all went off the rails in hilarious fashion but I always suspected there was more going on behind the scenes.

I love this lineup. I would just slot in Yandle over Fowler, and Kreider over Okposo.

I kind of disagree. He'll have a staff which will moderate things a touch. Plus, this gives him the opportunity to focus on watching players live/video and roster-building that coaches during the regular season won't have time to do.

A joke of a coach for a joke of a tournament. Todd Richards did a great job with a weak squad (on paper). I guess Jon Cooper might be used for the U23 team so he wasn't available for Team USA. Torts brings experience but strategically he's not a top coach and I think that motivation isn't needed from the coach in international play and I think in a short tournament like this you have to be able to understand what your opponent's strengths are, and come in with a good gameplan and ability to adjust depending on what happens during the game.

Disappointing choice for a coach, an really odd to name him this far in advance. As Rabid mentioned it's nice that Torts will be able to focus on the team full time now, but I think he'd be better suited in a consultant role in that regard.

Anyone know if he'll have any player biases that will make certain players more or less likely to be picked?

I actually like it. Following more of a soccer model of having a more full time nation team coach for the tournament. Also not having a coach who also coaches an nhl team may remove some politics in the player picks.

That might be the case.

I agree. And it's not like there is so much to choose from, like in Canada. Maybe Richards will be one of the assistants?

I don't hate the choice per se, I just think it's uninspired. That doesn't mean Torts can't or won't be successful as the coach though and I'll be rooting for him like he was my choice. His grating style that wears on a team over the course of a season shouldn't be an issue here. Instead, in a short tournament, it could be a benefit in terms of getting players to go above and beyond for a short time. His passion, exuberance, and even over-the-top nature could be a catalyst that can be harnessed (AKA tolerated) in a short tournament and bring out the best in the team.

The fact that he won't be coaching in the NHL and will have more time to scout, talk to potential players, etc. is a nice benefit.

I think my biggest fear is that they picked Torts because they're trying to recreate 2010, much like they tried in 2014, instead of picking the best team they can based only on their current player pool. If players like Brown, Callahan, Orpik, etc. are even mentioned as candidates then I'll know that to be the case and what worries me is that those guys are Torts' type guys. Only time will tell and I'll certainly give Torts and co. the benefit of the doubt, but I'm cautious.
