If you think that Markov and Orlov aren't top notch hten you don't know what you are talking about. Yes, Markov isn't in his prime, but his experience and vision are there. Orlov is underrated by ppl who don't know better than to read stats.

Kulikov isn't that great, but this list doesn't mean the people on the list are the best. Especially for Russia as the coaching staff decided to name KHL players later.

Orlov is definitely underrated, I'm a Caps a fan btw. Markov is still OK on the small ice, even though he's slow. Kulikov is alright I guess.

BUT, let's talk business now :

CANADA vs. RUSSIA TOP 3 DEFENSEMEN

Doughty >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Markov
Keith >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Orlov
Vlasic >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kulikov

I think his role will be Malkin's sidekick, as it was at the last WC.

As stated in my roster prediction, yes. It's the obvious MMG connection. But I don't expect it to be final.

Well, I could agree that still Datsyuk > Anisimov, but when we add Panarin, chemistry turns the math around:
Panarin+Datsyuk < Panarin+Anisimov.

Datsyuk is the one guy in the world who has chemistry with everybody. That's not the problem. The problem ist how short the tournament is. Breaking up line combos from the actual teams would be insane.

So

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov

and

Panarin - Anisimov

is pretty much a given.

Well, their defense is certainly not comparable to Canada or Sweden. The difference is massive, and nearly absurd.

Doughty? no
Keith?:laugh::laugh: I watched a fair share of Keith's and Orlov's games tis season. Yes, Keith has alls those awards back home. Right now on the ice I don't see how he is that much better if at all.

comparing Vlasic to Kulikov? why actually?

Yes, Canada's defence is better overall. Canada's forwards on the other hand...

I don't like this >>>>> stuff, but there would be a lot of it if we compared Russia's forwards to Canada's, or any other nation that is.

Exactly, Russia has AHL defense. At least they're used to have some really good offensive minded Ds. A long time ago, in a glaxy far far away ...

Russia's recent failures are not a result of a lack of good forwards, Russia's offense, on paper, is as good as any other country's, or better.

BUT, the lack of good skating and puck moving defensemen will be deadly, once again. Defense is fundamental, just like a building needs solid foundations to stand tall.

This team will spend most of the time running behind the puck in the defensive zone.

And watching Sochi Olympics. "AHL" is the best way to describe Russia's D.

How many games again? Ppl on hfboards are really getting in the mood about sample size, intangibles and what not... except it's Russia, right? With Russia it's always simple. It's what good for nothing analysts say. Even GMs and scouts in NA aren't able to evalute Russians properly obviously. I don't expect that from a fan.

Other than that they are doomed to fail this is pretty true. You can say that they shouldn't be evaluated on stats but neither Orlov or Kulikov is the Chris Paul type point guard of the offense that'd be really beneficial for them to have. Hopefully Provorov in the future can fill that role like he has at the junior level. Without a solid distributor goals have to come on the counterattack or forwards have to work twice as hard to create chances.

I'd do.

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Tarasenko
Kovalchuk-Malkin- Kucherov
Panarin-Anisimov-Radulov
Kulemin-Datsyuk-Nemistrikov
Burmistrov

Short tourney so I went for established pairings for chemistry. Datsyuk is a bit underused but he'll make an awesome defensive line and can still play special teams to round out his minutes. If Kovalchuk and Malkin aren't gelling you can always plug in Kulemin in certain situations. Burmistrov as extra forward is a bit meh, but at least he's flexible.

Markov-Orlov
Kulikov-Voynov
Emelin-Zaitsev
Marachenko

It's on small ice so I largely went with guys who have nhl experience. Markov is somewhat older and slower but he's still our leading point getter. Hopefully since the event is in September he won't be worn down yet. I'd rather take a chance on Voynov, even if he's rusty. Since there's noone else with his experience and game breaking ability. Emelin is fine in a limited role, since he brings physicality lacking in the rest of the squad.

Bobrovsky
Varlamov
Vasilevsky

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-RADULOV
MOZYAKIN-Malkin-Kucherov
Panarin-Datzyuk-Tarasenko
SHIPACHEV-Anisimov-Kulemin
Nаmestnikov

Markov-Orlov
Kulikov-ZAITZEV
EMELIN-MARCHENKO
CHUDINOV

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-???
Kulemin-Malkin-Tarasenko
Panarin-Anisimov-Kucherov
Namestnikov-Datsyuk-???

Kane is, of course, the cornerstone of that line, but 'carried heavily' is a bit of exaggerration. Imo, replacing Kane with Tarasenko could more or less work for NT.

Too much of the '>' for the combination that have never played together.

World Cup will consist of max 5 games, which means that there will be no time to waste searching for some new working combos and here some chemistry will be pretty valuable, at least just in terms of players knowing how to play with each other.

+ every team, including Russia, plays 3 pre-tournament games. That's great imo.

If everything clicks, Russian offence could be scary, I gotta tell you. You can have 4 great duos with complimentary players (Ovechkin+Kunzetsov; Malkin+Tarasenko; Panarin+Datsyuk; Radulov+Mozyakin maybe?) I think Datsyuk could be more used in a defensive role as a "4th liner", but I don't know what players do you have in the KHL, so you certainly know better.

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Kucherov
Panrin - Malkin - Tarasenko
Kulemin - Datsyuk - Radulov
Anisimov - Mozyakin - ?
Namestnikov

If the KHL has yet to decide on the participation of its players (Kovalchuk & Radulov), how is it possible that Sobotka and Kempny are on the Czech roster?

Because it was a hoax all the time. Mystification that "even the KHL is against the World Cup". Yet you see first KHL players on the rosters.
So who's wrong now.

Tretiak said they didn't select any KHLers because they didn't want to discratct them from the playoffs that arr ongoing in the KHL as we speak.

Shipachev and Gusev)
Gusev is an absolute clone Kucherov
they are players of the same level

A. Not really. B. 3 forward slots left, Gusev isn't going to make the cut, not unless you want to leave Shipachev or mozyakin behind.

Shipachev is basically left behind by the fact there are already 5 centers on the short list. Mozyakin? Not the silly discussion again. He always fails in the games that matter it seems. Has a rough start to the KHL playoffs too. He isn't suited for small ice.

At least now with Kuznetsov, Ovechkin and Malkin will be on different lines :yo:

For the first 3 lines, LWs and Cs must play together, then you can rotate the RWs, but I think with Tarasenko as 3RW, the lines will be more homogeneous. Let him carry a line.

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Radulov
Malkin - Datsyuk - Kucherov
Panarin - Anisimov - Tarasenko
Kulemin - Shipachev - Dadonov
Namestnikov

Or put Gusev instead of Dadonov and Namestnikov will become #4RW and Nikita #13

Markov - Kulikov
Orlov - Zaitsev
Emelin - Marchenko
Medvedev or Chudinov or Nesterov

Varlamov
Bobrovsky
Vasilevskiy
