One of the greatest USA hockey players thinks this idea sucks! Read arcticle

He doesn't like the format but his comments weren't 100% negative or he wouldn't have said:
I think it will be an interesting concept and I am intrigued about watching the team ...

Also ...
Leetch did note that he was looking forward to seeing how the youthful exuberance played out with the group, which could be a positive for this tournament.

“I believe it will be interesting to watch the players and the team and they will – as coach Wilson said they’re hungry and ready to go,†Leetch said.

also Janney said:
" I’m intrigued because I think there’s great talent (on team North America) there and they’ll be fun to watch,"

and there's this:
Ron Wilson, who coached 1996 American team as well as many other U.S. teams understood why this type of format is important for this particular tournament,

The gimmick teams suck, I think everyone agrees with that. However, there are some positives to this format and it should indeed be very interesting. I't seems like there are so many posters here who refuse to see this tournament as anything but completely useless and meaningless. Perhaps quotes from people like Leetch will make some people re-consider though so I'm glad you posted this. :)

It's probably been asked a thousand times: but what anthem will be played if they win a game?

there won't be any athems being played during the group stage. Not sure about anything else, but there wouldn't be a problem to play canadian+american anthem, obviously.

There would be a problem, since team North America under 24 is neither of those countries.

It will be interesting to see how McLellan uses lines with so many centers..

Gaudreau - McDavid - MacKinnon
Drouin - Scheifele - Eichel
Larkin - Monahan - RNH
Saad - Couturier - Matthews/Miller
Miller/Matthews

Rielly - Ekblad
Gostisbehere - Parayko
Murray - Jones
Trouba

This seems best to me.

Eichel and McDavid have to be together.

Just because you have called me out before.

Why couldn't they play the 'Star-Spangled Banner' and 'O Canada'? We do it before every NHL game featuring American and Canadian teams. The Young Guns represent only the USA and Canada.

This is one of your weaker arguments. I'm with you on some of your other arguments, but this is being petulant.

The top adepts imo are Brandon Saad, Couturier, Scheifele, Monahan, McDavid.

A young team having to face hockey powers in Russia, Finland, and Sweden results in our young North American players facing off against the best nations the European hockey world can offer. These teams are sending their best and coming to our shores. The NHL obviously split the groups up purposefully in this manner.

This team needs to come together and develop that "us against the world" attitude. Canadian and American differences need to be put aside to show the Old World, through hockey, that we are different from them. Our experiences on our continent, and the rugged pioneering spirit that it took to form our nations cannot be matched by the Old World. For the Young Guns to succeed, they need to reach a deep level of commitment to each other as more than neighbours. These American and Canadian kids are brothers. No two sovereign nations have this type of relationship in the entire world. We are distinct people, we mock each other, and we frequently take each other for granted. However, when push comes to shove and it's time to battle, Americans and Canadians will come together and will always be best friends and family.

America is the older rebellious brother, Canada is the younger brother who decided to stay closer to home with our parents (the United Kingdom). It's a special relationship amongst nations that European nations might not understand. Our history is distinct from the history and relationships between European nations.

An isolated camp deep in the mountains of the Canadian Rockies or American Appalachians could do this team well. Somewhere with a rink within a 30 min bus drive, but isolated enough so only the players, trainers, and coaching staff are together isolated from the outside world could be what this team needs. Somewhere in the wilderness with mountains, cabins, and fresh water. Outside of cell and internet reception. Together as a team in the North American wilderness.

The leadership question needs to be decided solely by the players in the locker room. A young team like this needs youthful ignorance and optimism. Get these kids believing in each other. As noted, the Finns, Swedes, and Russians will provide the best Europe can bring. This is our continent and if they are going to beat these kids, they will have to fight for every second until the final buzzer rings. They will have to take it from them, nothing will be given and no one is rolling over.

And during the elimination stage?
And what if Europe wins a game? Are they going to play like 7 anthems?

So who gets to be captain?
McDavid. He's the reason this team even exists.

Most overrated to underrate in this tournament. Everyone going "No one is counting on this team to win any games" Yeah well it is a team full of superstars, they are as competitive as any of the teams shut the **** up.

Apparently this teams beats Finland and Russia. I don't believe that for one second.

Prediction for the Young Gun pool:
1. Russia.................3-0
2. Sweden...............2-1 (loss to Russia)
3. Suomi.................0-2-1-0 (Overtime win over the Young Guns)
4. U24 Young Guns...0-2-0-1 (Overtime loss to Suomi)

Russia rolls through the group. Russian players will seize the energy of the Canadian crowd. Ovechkin is loved in Canada (except when he plays us). He will lead the Russian team to 1st in their group so they avoid Canada in the semis.

Semis:
Canada v Sweden
Russia v USA

Finals:
Canada v Russia. Canada wins 2 games to 0 to capture the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Post-Tournament:
Canada is in a party spirit and all fans, from all nations embrace the festive atmosphere. It is a party in Toronto, Canada shows our European and Northern neighbours a good time. The hockey world comes together and parties as equals. We enjoy sharing "our game" with each other, we see each other as at our core the same. No matter what is happening in the world, we will always share hockey together, ice hockey bonds our northern nations together.

Hockey belongs to Canada, Russia, Sweden, Suomi, Czechia, the USA, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, Germany, France, Latvia, Norway, Belarus, Austria, Kazakhstan, and Slovenia.

Honourable mention: Hungary. They were elevated to the elite level this year at the 2016 WHC and brought some of the best fans I have seen in a long time. Non-stop drumming, singing, and dancing. Sang their national anthem to their players after they lost. They deserve recognition, they soaked up the festive hockey atmosphere and supported their team start to finish.

Can't see Russia losing to U24 and even Sweden but Russia has not won Finland in the 21st century. U24 will be facing highly patriotic countries and expect them to lose all games.

I'm predicting Finns in the underdog role.

I've learned about your culture as I've met many a Finnish fans in my travels, I've also shared many discussions over PM with numerous Finnish posters, multiple of whom I would call friends and will look up if I'm Finland. Our people share many similarities.

Suomi is bringing a young squad. You're testing your lion pups. Realistically, the pressure is on Russia and Sweden. You are right where you want to be, underdog with your back against the wall. I believe Finland has faced obstacles like this once or twice :). Good luck.

Another interesting article in there with Daniel Alfredson talking about the World Cup. He says he and the team are very excited about it and that he thinks it will be even harder to win then the olympics. I suppose the naysayers will say he is just a talking head for the NHL but I don't really see why as he is done and out of the league.

I agree with Alfie...........it probably will be harder to win then the olympics. Certainly the teams will be better prepared.

It is every persons right not to watch if they wish and I understand their reasons, but I must admit I am getting excited to see the level of hockey that will be played, it could/should be top notch.

I love how they have gone back to best 2 out of 3 for the finals, it gives a different dimension to a tournament of such caliber.

I can't see how they realistically pass themselves off in an underdog role this this time with the under 23 team in their group and especially considering their recent success but I suppose they will try. Fans probably don't buy it this time however.

I know I don't.
