Yeah, that was exactly what I was saying. I wasn't trying to say at all that the players will play the WC games as any other top game, whether it is Stanley Cup playoffs, or the World Cup.

If you think that these players, who are not playing for a national team, have the exact same motivation that players who play for a national team have... then obviously you think that playing for a national team has no impact on motivation. It's fairly obvious.

Honest question.

Do you think the motivation of the national teams will be less then usual for an event such as this?

I would think probably myself.

Not sure when it comes to the national teams. For instance, Finland vs Sweden will probably be the same as in any other setting. I have a hard time that Finland would care so much about beating their hated rivals the Euro Leftovers though.

I get your logic here, but I don't mean it in that sense, I mean motivation as effort. Of course that McDavid's motivation - in pure sense of that word - for Team NA is gonna be different than for Team Canada, that's pretty obvious, but does it mean automatically lesser? How could we possibly know? Is Crosby less motivated to play for the Penguins than for Canada? I don't know. I'm guessing he puts the same amount of effort into both - which is what I meant when referencing to this NA team "motivation" - even though his motivation when wearing Maple Leaf jersey is gonna be obviously different, maybe a bit higher (even though players often compare SC and the olympics as equal, so)

Team North America may have the MOST to play for.

If these young guns can pull it off, it puts their roster on par with the older elite players. That's a good chip to play coming during RFA negotiations.

It could also revolutionize the thinking process of the entire draft & develop method.

If contract negotiations are a factor, why would it affect those players the most? It affects these young players even less so because they are, as you said, restricted. Also, I'm a little skeptical that players are actively thinking about how at most six or seven games can affect their contract while those games are taking place.

I want to see Gaudreau play with McDavid, as it likely will only happen this once.

Have all star games been cancelled?

The 2016 World Cup is essentially an all star game.

I agree. I was just curious about why McDavid and Gaudreau wouldn't be able to play together at all star games, where those kinds of random player combinations belong.

Matthews generational talent... Okay his projection is top 10-20 Centre in NHL and atm he is maybe average 2-3rd liner. I wouldnt trade him if only for this autumn's World Cup even for Jori Lehterä or Erik Haula.

Top 20 Center in the NHL... LOL. Hes been described as a better Kopitar and Thornton combo. Thats a top 5 ceiling not a top 20 ceiling.

Wait until you see it happen ceilings aren't everything. Plus draft picks are always compared to the best players when they are drafted.
He could be better but it's a bit premature

So McDavid's 40 games aren't enough to show his potential either right? The "unproven" argument is the weakest argument on HFboards. Just stop with it already. His ceiling is top 5 C in the game, give the guy some respect.

Thornton was number one for a while. Saying he's gonna be better than a Thornton Kopitar combo for sure is pretty crazy. Sure I see him getting to be a top 5 player one day.

And mcdavids 40 games at the second highest ppg is way better than a guys draft season to use as a judge . Yakupov put up better numbers than stamkos like it's not a sure thing. That's the thing about potential and ceilings tho.

Yep mhm.. sure... Leafs got a top prospect with a ridiculously high top 5 ceiling. I understand that the people of HF hate that, but stop trying to knock the kid.

You may want to look into that and recheck those stats. He beat the rookie goal scoring mark set by Stamkos but didn't really come close to putting up similar numbers over their 2 year jr. careers. *Yakupov beat that rookie record being a year older. In jr. hockey, that matters. So, I don't put a whole lot of stock into that accomplishment.

He will not be better than Joe "188 assists in 2 seasons" Thornton. Nor will he have the defensive game of Kopitar. He will probably end up better than Kopitar offensively (nowhere near Joe still) but slightly worse defensively.

Keep the genie in the bottle buddy...

Gostisbehere with ESPN on World Cup and more

ESPN.com: What did it mean to you to be added to the roster for Team North America?

Gostisbehere: It's just a tremendous honor. When you look at some of those names on that roster, and you're on it, as well, it's humbling, for sure. Just to be associated with some of those guys is pretty sweet. Being part of this World Cup is a tremendous honor, and I thanked all my coaches, my family and everyone who helped me get here.

ESPN.com: What do you think of the Team North America roster?

Gostisbehere: When you look at our roster, people are probably saying, 'Holy cow, these guys are going to be pretty good.' I think we'll surprise some guys. But there are [great] players with all the different countries, and it's just cool to see the different dynamic of the World Cup with Team Europe and Team North America, and being part of the young guys' team, it's pretty cool to see.

You want us to polish Matthews for you, just admit it.
