International tournament = participants are nothing but national teams in a competitive environment.
Of course, it's not to be said that other kind of teams can't be involved, and yes, sometimes it could be interesting to see how any kind of "fantasy" roster could do against a more legitimate squad. However, they obviously have no value in a competitive environment. They have no legacy, no future. You can't crown them champions and say they were the best national team in that given day. In fact, you shouldn't be able to let facing such a team decide any position in a tournament that's supposed to possess international value of any kind. Why the NHL pretends it can do this is mind-boggling.
But like I said, it doesn't mean one can't take a national team and pit them against a collection squad. There's just a different name for this. It's exhibition.
And, while people may tune in for the curiosity of it all, nobody gives a damn what the result is in exhibition.
