Most people have limitless 3G/4G connections in Finland, so there's not a huge demand for public wifi ( though 3G doesn't really work at Hartwall Arena).

This. Mobile plans here are very reasonably priced so if you're coming from abroad and think you'll definitely need to be connected at all times, you might want to buy a prepaid package. For example for a weeks stay DNA Smart Prepaid package costs 7,90 € and gives you 7€ worth of airtime, which at premium level is 1€ per day and gets you 500 min/SMS/MMS per day and unlimited 4G data.

Thanks. My provider has travel packs with data, so I might grab one of those. Don't need much, just want to be able to post photos from the games on my phone while I'm at the rink.

From what I can tell, games in Helsinki start at 2p, 4p, 6p, or 8p local time.

So...with time differences...

2pm game in Helsinki would be (in Canada) - 4am PST, 5am MT, 6am CT, 7am ET, 8am AT, 830am NFT

4pm game = 6am PT, 7a MT, 8a CT, 9a ET, 10a AT, 1030a NFT

6pm = 8am P, 9a M, 10a C, 11a E, 12p A, 1230p NFT

8pm (all Canada/US games) = 10a PT, 11a MT, 12p CT, 1pm ET, 2pm AT, 230pm NFT

Flights booked, tickets booked, ready to go! Now all I have to do is find a place to stay . . . I'll be flying in for the last 2 games of the round robin and then staying through for the final! Super stoked!

Were you also at the Malmo WJC? Some of the few other USA fans we met in Malmo were from NC, I think...

I have been thinking that there surely should be a fan meeting (or actually several ones), but have wondered about logistics - the venue should be a sizeable one but not stupidly expensive and also usefully situated. Any suggestions?

What about meeting in a restaurant in the arenas before the game(s)?

I don't know many venues around either arena, other than Pasila Station (and accompanying mall). The only other place that I know would be big enough is the Market Square downtown, but that's outdoors and weather dependent.

Given the multiple venues and start times, maybe there should be a designated bar in the city center area that can serve as an unofficial "hockey fan meeting place" for the whole tournament? I've never been to Helsinki so I have no suggestions, but if anyone has any ideas for a bar that can serve as a de facto HFBoards clubhouse, that would be great!

There are a few "beer houses" ("Oluthuone") downtown near the city center - Kitty House and Angelterre are a couple and have food/drink. I haven't been to either, but I've seen Angleterre from the outside and it looks big.

Just got a bit confused here while buying tickets, if I pay the 29Euros to go see Canada-Sweden, do I have to pay another 29 to get the Denmark-USA game or is it a "daily" tickets that gives you access to all games in that arena on that day? It seems a bit pricy to pay 100 Euros for Final and Bronze games.

It's a daily ticket that gives you access to all games in that arena on that day. It's very clear on the ticket itself that it is valid for both games in that arena.

Just get the local SIM card, it'll be much cheaper and you won't have to worry about not using it too much. Unless your phone is locked, of course..

Bars are plentiful in Helsinki, that won't be an issue! Angleterre and Kittys are fine, but neither serve food, I don't think. An easy choice would be something near the railway station like Vltava or Sports Academy - which even has a private sauna available to rent! :yo:

Angleterre is pretty expensive but I think it's rather sizeable (it has quite a good Chinese just round the corner with an excellent buffet lunch). I would think that the new "Boston Irish" sports bar in Forum would be an eerie experice for North American fans - though it has an excellent selection of IPAs.

This might be resemebling a mini World Championship with the amount of fans coming over. So close to Russia as well, and with the amount of Canadians/ Americans , this is going to turn into quite a week, :handclap:

Too much to go through with that. I'm a very simple technology guy. Grab a travel pack before I go and leave it at that, haha.

Just looking at O'Leary's menu - you'd never guess it was in Helsinki. The prices are pretty solid (touch more expensive than North America), but the food is dead on what you'd find here. The location is nice for getting to the games, too.

I went to MTL for the group stage in 2014, will not be spending any $ on this ever again lol

Helsinki is the one spot outside of the Great Lakes area I'd go as my mom's side is Finnish. I went to the Fin/Rus pre-tournament game last year, but wasn't going to shell out the cash for Toronto. For me, it's more the experience of being over there, plus the atmosphere, than the actual results (though, I want Canada to win). I'll give them credit, too, as the prices are far more reasonable than I anticipated.

Who else is attending the semis? HF meet-up would be cool for sure.

I'll be at most of the Canada round-robin games (not USA, as I'm flying that day), the Fin/Slov game, and the QF/SF/F games.

Haha, I'm kind of expecting to run into groups on Trams and have national anthems break out.

I've got plane an game tickets locked up now, but I'm wondering what makes a good hotel for 4 Canadians going to see the games? I've also been checking airbnb, but most rooms aren't available around that time.

Anybody have any good hotel advice?

Stay near tram or bus routes. Makes getting to games easy. My hotel is a 2min walk from routes to both arenas

I might also get my share of live WJC hockey this time since happen to be staying in Helsinki/Finland at that time. So, tell me what are the must watch -games of the round robin. Too lazy to check even the grops now. No, not lazy but too tired and when I am not I just don't have the time. :D

Some of these hypothetical matchups should be worth checking at the arena:

RUS-CAN? RUS-USA? RUS-SWE? SWE-FIN? FIN-USA? USA-CAN? SWE-CAN? USA-SWE? FIN -RUS? FIN-CAN?

Out of those matchups you specified, only FIN-RUS can be checked "at the arena" (in case you meant Hartwall Areena). The B group, however, who play their games in the other rink, theres USA, CAN and SWE playing against each other.

Group A also has FIN-CZE, CZE-RUS, then of course there's Slovakia and Belarus :sarcasm:
