Personally I think Ras has always been a bit overrated. Love the guy. He’s a solid 2nd pair D. But he’s not the guy I would sign long term. I think his play has fallen off quite a bit already this year.

Sign Kevin Bahl and another vet D in the offseason to a shorter deal. Provorov, Pionk, Gavrikov, Duomolin, Ceci. There should be guys available on short term deals that can be signed to avoid throwing the kids to the wolves. Plus I think Solo and Kuz are ready to play as 4/5/6 guys as well.

Provorov would be a big add for this team if we traded Rasmus for an upgrade elsewhere.
If there's an Andersson/Cozens trade that lines up, I think you pull the trigger.

Provorov - Weegar
Bahl - Parekh
Bean/Solo - Pachal
Solo/Bean

is actually a solid group going into next season.

In addition to what you'd add up front on the Andersson deal.

There's no way ending up closer to Hamilton would be disappointing, he has Norris votes in six seasons and has regularly been ranked as a top 10-20 d-man in the league.

Sorry, I meant it as a hype and/or the play style fit that has been mentioned so far. Yes, Hamilton is a great dman and an excellent pick at 9th OA. But the moaning and groaning some of the fanbase has for a dman of that style for their flaws vs advantages would be intolerable. I didn't truly mean it that way when I first said it, but I understand how it was interpreted that way that I was acting like Parekh would be a bust if he was more like Hamilton than Makar. Poor wording. My bad.

Luckily, Parekh already sorta shows he kinda like playing with an edge, so the odds of him being a repeat of the moans and groans of Hamilton are quite low.

I will be the first to admit that I hated this pick.
He's done everything right at the CHL level. There's no chance he's not an impact NHLer at this rate, those numbers he's putting are not just great for him, but they're among the all-time greats in the OHL. His 17 and 18 year old seasons are beyond impressive.

The only guy to do something like this is Ellis, and he was on one helluva of Spitfires team. A bunch of first rounders on that club with some having significant NHL careers.

This Saginaw team doesn't jump off the page. It's Misa and Parekh; lots of undrafted guys. It's beyond impressive what he's putting together.

They are 15-4-2 (.762) since December. The only team better during that same stretch is Washington.
Dallas has also been better than them.

And it would shock no one if they reverted back to .500 hockey. Their PP is almost 40% in that time... their 5v5 production isn't even in the top 20, they will fall back to earth

Casual 4pt night for Parekh all of them on the powerplay. Probably would run a better PP than any of the gumps we have now or anywhere else in this org.

1G away from becoming the first dman in major junior history to score 30Gs in his draft season and his D+1.

The fact he isn't just all assists like Brzustewicz was last season is really appealing to me.

it's also nice to see 4 of out 2024 picks are in the top 20 in OHL scoring.

When the highlights are posted you'll want to see his 4th assist on Mangone's goal. His vision is insane.

For a brief update as someone who watches most Saginaw games (Saginaw is really fun).

- Parekh is too good for the OHL offensively. His only quiet offensive games are the ones where Saginaw never really has the puck. I've noticed teams play him very tight off of the puck because the easiest way to defend him is basically just not letting him touch the puck. He's basically got "gravity" to steal a basketball term. Hell, earlier this month I think I actually saw the Sault St Marie try out what I can only describe as an umbrella PK (think the guy in front as the handle and then man on man for the 3 high guys on the PP), it took like two passes before Zayne recognized how aggressive they were being and hit one of the two low guys which turned into an easy goal.

- Chernyshov is a beast and his addition to the Spirit has turned them into an absolute wagon. Him being so good on the half wall lets Parekh get a lot more easy points than he was during the first half of the season. In the early months if Parekh got a point it was basically because he was primarily responsible for creating a goal. He still does that now but he's also getting rewarded for just moving and distributing the puck well on the PP.

- Defense is a work in progress but I do think it's progressing. He's getting better at things like breaking up passes and boxing out. Gets caught up ice once or twice a game but I think when he's (analytically) the best offensive player in the league you can live with that.

- I like his defending against the rush when he's aggressive. He's good at denying entries due to his lateral mobility. Same thing on the PK, he likes to rush unsuspecting players as they receive the puck and he often succeeds in stealing it because he's on them before they've even picked their heads up.

- Seems much stronger. Not NHL strong, but he doesn't get manhandled on the regular like he used to.

- The area I've seen the biggest improvement in is his breakout and puck retrievals. He's using his feet a lot more and his success rate has skyrocketed. There's been multiple goals in the last month or so that come off of a rush that started with Parekh beating somebody with his feet and then making a nice pass in transition. For example, the 6th goal in tonight's game came off of a nice backhand sauce from him to spring a 3 on 2.

I've also watched most of the Flames other CHL prospects, though only a handful of games for each.

I will fully admit I wanted the 3 guys taken before him but I do like that Conroy decided to take a big swing on talent at #9. Looks like Zayne the Brain has been proving him right. Chernyshov is nuts definitely. I try to catch bits of all our CHL guys seasons but usually only a couple games a month.

What do you think of Battaglia and Misa? I've tried to watch Gridin but the french commentary grinds on me.

I was up from midnight to 2am just to keep an eye on flashscore.com and Mr Parekh 😀 Think last D guy who hit 100 in juniors was Ryan Ellis in 58 (in '10-11).

Can Parekh better it (currently on 92 in 54)?

Misa:

I like Misa quite a bit, I don't really think the upside is super high but he brings some sorely needed speed to the system. Good playmaker, not a huge shooting threat, but he plays a smart, patient game and is willing to get to the front of the net. He's also responsible defensively and a very good puck carrier. I've seen him compared to Ryan McLeod and I kind of get it, they're both 2 way C's who are fast and excel in transition, but McLeod is bigger and faster and I think Misa is a much better playmaker. His production this year has been up and down but I put a lot of that on Brampton's coach. Every time I tune in they're doing something different with their lines, sometimes he's with Martone and Rehkopf, sometimes just Rehkopf, sometimes neither and in the most recent game I saw they had him playing PP2 for unclear reasons.

I think he'll be in the NCAA next year and that will do him a lot of good, I really don't like the AHL for those late birthday 19/20 year olds. Especially when they're drafted later, they just end up buried playing a grinder style game in the bottom 6 and often lose confidence in themselves. I think in the NCAA he'll get a chance to grow his game against guys who are bigger and stronger than he is while still getting puck touches and offensive chances to learn how to create against higher level competition.

Battaglia:

Battaglia is really interesting to me because the immediate scouting reports I read/saw following that draft billed him as a different player than he actually is. I saw a lot of bottom 6 projections on him and I have a bit of a hard time picturing it. He's not particularly fast or good defensively so I just don't really get the level of certainty that "he'll play" that I do out of someone like Sam Honzek, who, if his offense never materializes likely could still play in the league as a 4LW, who forechecks, plays responsibly and occasionally beats a goalie clean with his shot. However, I actually do think Battaglia has top 6 upside (likely 2nd line). His shot is hard, accurate and he gets it off quickly. His vision and passing is surprisingly good, not a lot of stuff through layers of traffic like you see from someone like Parekh but a lot of slips, area passes, give and go's and no look stuff that's creative and I think displays high hockey IQ. Like I said during the prospect camp, there's one pass he makes a game that just makes me go: "Huh? How did you even see that?" He's also a really smooth puck handler and he's hard to get off the puck when he's moving. He's not dancing guys often like Beckett Sennecke but he's actually a pretty dangerous rush threat even as a fairly middling skater because he can either stop up and survey for trailers or make a quick move outside, drop the shoulder and take it to the net.

One thing that I really like about Battaglia is his ability to play as a one touch player. He can be a puck dominant player circling and surveying the zone but I also think he makes a lot winning plays where the puck is only on his stick for half a second, quick touch passes, tips, chips to open areas, etc, he can be that connecter who doesn't really need the puck all the time to be effective. Same thing on the Powerplay, he's a good shooter and decent passer off of the half wall but he's also really effective playing the JVR spot, can hit the bumper or quickly beat the goalie. I like that kind of versatility in a prospect because it tells me there's some kind of fall back game there, or multiple paths to becoming an effective NHL player. You're not a one trick pony who needs certain linemates to play a certain way to be effective, you might be able to play different roles depending on where and who you're playing with in the lineup. Plus, guys who genuinely excel in a net front or bumper role are a lot more rare than half wall guys IMO. I don't know if Battaglia will actually make the NHL or not, nor what role he'll end up playing in but based on what I've seen I really like his potential. I'm hoping to see him playing for Canada at the WJC next season but the deck is really stacked against him.

Gridin/QMJHL:

For the QMJHL games I typically watch on mute because I don't speak French either or alternatively if you watch a game featuring one of the maritime teams (Halifax, Moncton, etc) those games usually have an english broadcast. I haven't watched Gridin in a month or two honestly, I'll definitely try and catch one or two of his games when he's back from injury. From what I saw in the games I watched I thought he was on the right track, he was being more tenacious and working harder for loose pucks. I think that he's a fairly talented player who's going to need to learn a more pro style game. I watched earlier in the year though, before the production really took off so I'm interested in seeing what he looks like now. I wish he'd been able to go to the NCAA, I like that he's "the guy" on his team but I'm not sure the USHL -> QMJHL pipeline is a very good route to prepare him for pro hockey.

TLDR:

- Misa is a good playmaker, I think he could be an offensive 3C.
- Battaglia has higher potential than I think he's given credit for and he's a unique player.
- Gridin is still a bit of a question mark for me but he's a talented player and I haven't seen him in a while.
- Thanks for reading!

Zayne the Brain, Zayne Insane...but how about Parekh? Direct pronunciation of Parekh in Czech means "hot dog". :D So hoping for Corn Dog to play with Hot Dog next season! Defo not Roon Dawg- Christ :D
