When I saw Condon's name as one of the goalies, coming over for the US, I just shook my head.

Which goes to show you how many goalies declined. Anderson, Miller, Hellebuyck, Quick, even Darling was available. They got accepted by 2 of their worst goalies who saw time in the NHL this season. Not a shocking result to lose a game like this when you don't have competent goaltending. Demko has a higher ceiling than both their NHL goalies, baffling why he hasn't seen a second of action

Hard to understand why Hynes dont give chance for Demko when everybody see Condon and Kinkaid struggle. Now its not happen and they lose QF place maybe because of it. But also PP isnt work and thats other big problem.

The US didn't get a single player who finished in the top 25 in points among American players. They got 2 who finished in the top 40 among Americans. Their top scorer who made this team finished 121st in points in the NHL. That was Dylan Larkin. He was the only player they got that finished in top 150 in points. This is the US' D team.

For comparison, Canada got 25% of their top 36 players in points.

If anything, this US team should be worse than they are. Established players just don't want to come and USAH got tired over the years of begging players to come who didn't want to come. They extend invites to all of their top players and always get declined but they don't pressure them to stop declining and instead give young players and veterans who never would make the Olympic team or WCOH team a chance to wear the USA crest cause those players actually want to come. USAH would like to win gold at this event but the players just don't care. That's just the way it is.

Would failing to make the quarters actually shame players into coming next year? Just looking at the silver lining if they don't make it.

This team would be really good if they have Schneider in goal and Kane in offense. US have always lot of really good young guys and they can do big things if they got couple big players for help. Its not happen at the moment. If they put Demko in and he give them chance they can get medal. Its tell good things about USA hockey. I think they can win lot of big tournaments and WC give young players like Matthews good experience. If they have this tournament in US i really believe they would get most of available best players. But because this tournament is not nothing in US that probably not happen.

On the bright side. The US was the better team. But this should be a wake up call for next game. And getting forth maybe isn't the worst if the Czechs are first.

Unlikely. In 2010 the US was so bad that they did not only miss the quarterfinals but also ended up in the relegation round and nothing changed as a result.

Heard Demko is attending school so not sure if he can still make the USA team in time before tournament start. With this defense, think they will need the goaltending to stand on his head almost each game in the quarter final if they make it. One or two elite players on the team cannot rescue the team by themselves if the defense is simply not at its best. Everyone knows that Defense usually wins games, especially in the ones with low scoring.

The fact many star NHL players already pre-selected for their respective country World Cup roster and thus not required to audition for a spot has led to a lot of players turning down invites to this tournament this year, especially for those North American players who played in the post season who may want to avoid series injuries in this tournament.

If they are from Europe originally, it may be a different as they will be playing much closer to home and this tournament is far more important for the European nations than their North American counterpart.

Yeah but actually defense has been pretty solid. Canada game was tough but defense was good against Finland. Germany got 14 shots today and have to say defense was maybe best part for USA today.

Definitely a silver lining here. The medal round looks doable. Czechs look beatable. Ditto Swedes. Russians not so much. Put Svk out of their misery and then its onward and upward for this young American squad. After Larkin and Matthews, they may be thin on talent. Still, I haven't seen them play a bad game yet. They were the better team today, everywhere but the scoreboard. And even then, it took a seeing eye shot in the last minute to upset them...

Chin up Yankees...if things go according to Hoyle...the earliest you play Canada or Russia would be Gold Medal Game. Sans unnecessary penalties, you already showed you can beat Suomi. The other teams in your path ( in all likelihood ) are no better.

^^^^ JTD that is a great post.

And you know what? If players don't want to come, I'll root my tail off for Matt Hendricks and players like that who want to wear the crest. It sucks, yeah, but I just love USA Hockey.

Definitely....losing was the best thing that could've happened to them, in terms of moving forward in this tourney. Likely to be bracketed with Czechs and Finns, instead of Canada and Russia.

A few of things, not the ony thoughts, regarding the next two games, will be who Hynes and Tallon pick for the goalie also how quickly Nelson can mesh with Matthews. And getting Connor back in the lineup.

What ever happened to Patriotism in the good old USA.

If this team had Hellebuyck from last year we'd be a gold medal possibility. As it is we could easily lose to Slovakia tomorrow on five shots

USA really need big step up if they want to win Czechs. Goalies specially. Kinkaid was okay today and goals was not his fault. Stupid penalties is other big factor in their game. They do what they need to do but it was close. If they play sameway how they play against Finland there is good chance for them. Matthews is great player but if he waste so many opportunies this team cant achieve medal round. Today they have lot of chances but can't score. Can't happen in next game.

I'd like someone from the media to ask Tallon why he hasn't played Demko at all. Goaltending has been atrocious all tournament.

Taking a college goalie for the "experience" makes sense when you have Hellebuyck as your #1 goaltender, not when you have 2 goalies who realistically should be in the AHL. Demko is more talented than them and should have gotten a start. This is eerily similar to Hellebuyck being the third goalie 2 years ago and Tim Thomas being allowed to sink a team that could really score.

Pretty uninspired effort today. Tons of stupid penalties, wasted passes, and missed chances. Granted, the only reason this was close was due to the Slovakian goalie, but this team is trending downward. Their goalie made more big saves today than the USA goalies have all tournament and then some.

John Hynes needs to tell his players to drop the pissing matches with the refs about the crease. Stupid rule or not, it's the rule, it's easy to avoid, and they're going to call it if you don't avoid it.

Likewise, the coaches need to rethink having the wingers collapse too far down. Too many opposition scoring chances are from wide open d-men with all day to find a lane because our wingers are hanging around our net.

They won't beat the Czechs if they play like they have in the last two games.

Well......we got the bracket I'd hoped for. But that certainly wasnt what I had in mind.
