You'd think the ones from last year get the tie-breaker given their contributions.
Yep, that's one side of the coin, but the other side is that they already won the tournament last year, and may rather take a break for the summer...we'll see what happens.

Interesting to see how the World Cup affects things too. Some quality players will already be announced for that tournament, so even in Hocey Canada's eyes they're going to have a perfectly valid out. Other players might want to prove something. Some might even be angry about not being picked in the preliminary group.

I'm loving the enthusiasm making rosters this early, but I think we might be jumping the gun. Too hard to know who is going to be available/injured, etc.

Reimer is upcoming UFA.... I doubt that he will take the risk of injury. I don't know, maybe it will be the best, who knows at this point? It's too hard to say, Mason could be another possibility for starting goalie. Forgot about Bernier, he's not having good season but yes, he should be upgrade over Hammond. Talbot is solid.

Not bad, the Top 4 D is stacked with players. That I like.

But no chance Sid plays 2 years in a row. I was shocked he even played last year. He has his prize and we'll never see him at that tournament again.

Not a fan of the Ottawa line, particularly Turris, injured, not playing all that well imo, but his 2 wingers might be useful together or with different players. I like a HOFFMAN O’REILLY STONE 2nd line.

And a rookie 4th. line? no thanks. maybe 1 of them can find a role, but not all 3 and certainly not together.

You are not getting Simmonds to be the extra forward. That's not how it works. If you want him for this tournament, he has to be in the line-up. If he'll play poorly through the tournament then it's another thing.

Typically, you have to count for this role with some rookie, young player, or player who's 2nd/3rd line player on NHL team. Not an established top line winger.

you guys are getting over the line. the team will not look like a olympic team.....players like giroux, crosby etc will not play.

yet both played in last year's tournament. Crosby? Sure, thinking that Sid ever plays in that tournament again is sheer fantasy....but fantasyland is where hockey fans reside. Giroux? I could see a scenario whereby he plays again. He's probably still not a lock for a best on best tournament (although in my book he is) but what if he is left off the initial World Cup roster on March 1? He may have to give the Skoda tournament another shot to prove his worth to Team Canada brass.

Team Canada - The Europe version.

Dustin Boyd (KHL) - Matt Ellison (KHL) - Nigel Dawes (KHL)
Wojtek Wolski (KHL) - Justin Azevedo (KHL) - Brandon Kozun (KHL)
Pierre Marc Bouchard (NLA) - Josh Holden (NLA) - Cory Conacher (NLA)
Spencer Abott (SHL) - Greg Scott (SHL) - Matt D'Agostini (NLA)

Chris Campoli (SHL) - Cam Barker (KHL)
Mat Robinson (KHL) - Chris Lee (KHL)
Chay Genoway (KHL) - Daine Todd (KHL)

Danny Taylor (KHL)
Barry Brust (KHL)
Justin Pogge (SHL)

This team could reach semifinal. Would be funny to see this kind of team.....this guys would play with 100 % grit....this tournament would be Olympic for this players.

Agreed, expectations in this thread are way too high due to last year. I don't think that we will see such a strong team as last year. But who knows... I hope so.

I am pretty doubtful with regard to Letang and Johansen. Letang has been battling serious injuries for a long time, and Johansen skipped the tournament last year despite having no injury and no playoffs.

Wayne Simmonds is not in a position to dictate anything to Hockey Canada. Schenn ended up as the surplus forward last year, and he's pretty similar to Simmonds in terms of impact.

Why Johansen does not want to play in the national team ? He's still a young player )
I think that the players who do not want to go to the WC must be punished by depriving of their place at the Olympics or World Cup:handclap:

I don't know why Johansen didn't go. He and Couture both refused, despite seemingly being healthy and having no playoff obligations. Given that many superior players did show up, Johansen's decision looks like it was the wrong one.

Hockey Canada is never going to punish one of the top players for skipping the WHC by keeping them out of a best on best. That would outrage the general public, who demand to win best on best tournaments but don't pay much attention to the WHC. I can see a successful WHC being used as a springboard into a spot at a bigger tournament. That is exactly how Doughty made the 2010 Olympic team, for instance.

I would like to that the WС was more important tournament with the best players)

excluding injury of course, I think Johansen accepts an invite this year. He should be available...but if we are talking early 1st. rd. exits, then my fingers are crossed for Schwartz. Good to see him back playing and playing well. The guy is a gamer. I'd even find a spot for Fabbri. Pietrangelo would be a big get, but perhaps a tad bit optimistic.

The World Championship is forever going to be a secondary tournament of little importance to Canadians. The tournament that matters is the Stanley Cup playoffs. That's just the way it is.

But I do hope that Canada can manage to pull off the repeat Gold medal performance this year...if that happens then I'll forget about this tournament for a few years. but generally the WHC games are just a good daytime prelude to that evening's NHL playoff games.

If the WHC was conducted in August-September it would raise his prestige for Canada?

I doubt that Johansen will go. He hasn't gone at any point in the past, and his attitude seems less than ideal. Schwartz is very good, but St. Louis just might escape the first round this year. I wouldn't take Fabbri... only rookie other than McDavid I would take is Reinhart.

The prestige is directly related to the participants. If all of the best players went, it would be viewed as a very prestigious tournament. I doubt that players would be willing to cut their summers short every year for this tournament, but who knows.

I'd take Fabbri over Reinhart each and every time. It's pretty close right now, but Fabbri will be the better player. And you know as well as I do, that there is going to be more than 1 rookie on this year's team... in fact we'll probably see the same sort of effort from Hockey Canada in putting together this team as we do in an Olympic year. That wouldn't surprise me at alllllllllllllllllll.

I would be surprised if Fabbri ended up the better player. Reinhart looks like he could end up as an O'Reilly, which is very good. I could see him slotting into a defensive wing role on a big boy team in the future. As for the makeup of the team... it depends on how players react to the World Cup and who is named to the early roster.
