Going young....let the teams that miss playoffs get the shoot.....they will have long time to prepare.

Marner will be on a Mem cup run with the Knights.

Have to think Rielly and Kadri gets looked depending on how many players want to go to the WC. May actually be a very strong roster with bubble World Cup guys trying to get onto that roster.

And I guaranteed last year that Sid would never ever ever EVER play in the WHC again. 3 days later Sid made the call himself...so the only guarantee I feel safe in making is that Sid won't play 2 years in a row.

but Price does seem to have nagging injury concerns this year. if that's the case, MAF has seem to have played well enough and for long enough now, that I'm ok with him suiting up for Canada again...and he may believe there could be a spot for him on the World Cup team if he performs well. motivation.

I'm perfectly fine with Fleury being our starter at the worlds.

Seems like a valid concern. The Rick Nash pick in 2014, despite him having a horrible season at the time, indicates a strong preference for the familiar among the current Canadian group.
We will need to at least moderately move on from that core by 2018 I think, only the guys playing at their top or close to their top level from that group, I think that been through it before veteran presence is needed and a good thing but guys whose best days are clearly past need to be put out to pasture by 2018. The Getzlafs and Perrys and Nashs, etc need to show they really deserve to be there by 2018 or they should give way to fresh horses. But a guy like say Weber if he is at least 80% of what he was at his best probably needs to be there.

They just need the right mix. Most of Canada's best players in 2018 will be at in their mid 20s, so it's not going to be a team that is too young anyway. Crosby and Toews will still be there, Doughty too. Pietrangelo and Subban already have Olympic experience, as does Tavares. Seguin has been to the Stanley Cup finals twice. There is no need for Canada to pick anyone other than the best players for the 2018 Olympics.

Of course, the best possible roster would be incredibly loaded.

I expect these teams to miss the playoffs: Arizona, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg (I believe San Jose and Anaheim will get in) + Buffalo, Carolina, Columbus, Florida, New Jersey, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Toronto (a lot can change here, but still majority of these teams won't make it)

Also, I would be quite surprised to see Eric Staal at the Worlds again, considering the last time he represented there, he got seriously injured and it then influenced his next NHL season). But, never say never. I didn't include him here though. Even more surprising would be getting a call from Jarome Iginla. On the other hand, Shane Doan has represented Canada well many times and MAYBE he could be the veteran needed here to add some experience. I would be happy for him because he's a great player and a great leader and it would be great to win another gold-medal at the end of his career, when seemingly there is no hope really for a Stanley Cup now with the Coyotes, which is a shame for him.

I am also curious that how many available players of the last year's golden team actually answer the call / and how many will be actually invited by HC, if available. I mean mostly players like Giroux, Hall, Eberle, or O'Reilly. See in my team below, if having the opportunity, I would rather leave O'Reilly and Hall home, and play Monahan, Little, and Hoffman instead.

Matt Duchene - Claude Giroux - Nathan MacKinnon
Ryan O'Reilly - Connor McDavid - Jordan Eberle
Taylor Hall - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Ryan Johansen
Matt Hoffman - Kyle Turris - Mark Stone
Bryan Little, Sean Monahan

Mark Giordano - T.J. Brodie
Morgan Rielly - Aaron Ekblad
Dan Hamhuis - Tyson Barrie
Tyler Myers

Roberto Luongo, James Reimer

Bolded are players that I am 95% sure are on the team and answer the call if available and invited

Other players:

F: Domi, Duclair, Doan, Bennett, Iginla, Burrows, Ladd, Scheifele, Ennis, S.Reinhart, J.Staal, E.Staal, Skinner, Hartnell, Jenner, Huberdeau, Zajac, Henrique, Cammalleri, Simmonds, Couturier, B.Schenn, Lupul, Kadri, D.Strome, Virtanen, Marner
D: Murray, D.Hamilton, Phaneuf, Nurse, Tanev, D.Savard, Severson, Methot, Wiercioch)
G: Smith, Bernier, Talbot, Mason

bolded are either too old, usless or both.

And Strome, Virtanen and Marner? you have got to be kidding. especially Virtanan...after the performance he just turned in at the WJHC. I'm only now getting over and ready to forgive Boone Jenner's epic failures at his 2 junior kicks at the can. It will take a few years at least before I ever want to see Virtanen in a Team Canada jersey again...if ever.

what? did you not enjoy Prague last year?

There's a ton of talent available it seems but I'm not sure how many returnees will come back. Burns, O'Reilly, Crosby, Ennis, Hall, Eberle, Duchene, MacKinnon, Barrie, Giroux, Hamhuis, Savard all have a good chance to play again but would they want to play again for the 2nd straight year?

I'm expecting some new faces because I have my doubts about some of these guys playing again for a 2nd straight year, although I'd be happy if they come back.

Here's my guess from 4 months out:

Schwartz-Tavares-Little
Hall-McDavid-Eberle
Marchand-Bergeron-Stone
Nugent-Hopkins-Monahan-Turris
Jenner

Giordano-Brodie
Rielly-Myers
Murray-Hamilton
Parayko

Jones
Mason
Ward

Bill Peters/Pete DeBoer/Todd McLellan/Dave Cameron/Mike Babcock are all fine coaches. Not a ton of returnees so I'm being optimistic, a lot of guys who haven't been to this tournament in a while.

Hopefully all the u-24 Canadians sign on for the WHC and take a pass on the joke known as the World Cup.

Play for Canada or nothing at all.

After a WJC disappointment, time to turn our attention to the upcoming WHC in St. Petersburg/Moscow and defending last year's gold.

Potential roster of players from teams not making POs or eliminated in the 1st.rd.

Teams are permitted 25 roster spots, 3 goaltenders and 22 skaters that can be added at anytime in the tournament. Hockey Canada generally never names the full 25 player roster. HC doesn't generally like bringing extra bodies to Europe just to sit around and watch from the press-box.

They were a little trigger happy last year in naming the forwards...when Tavares became available and wanted to play there was no room for him. So, let's hope they save a spot or 2 up until the last minute in the event a significant player becomes available.

(best case scenario discounting injury/player rejecting invites and all the other blah blah nonsense)

And even though Stamkos looks like he'll be available, there's no chance he plays without a contract for next year, so I left him off any potential roster.

assuming that Calgary doesn't make the NHL playoffs (and I think that's a big if) why split up gio and Brodie as they are arguably the best NH Dman pairing in the league right now?

It's pretty hard to rule teams out at the moment. I'm guessing that Philadelphia, Carolina, Toronto, Columbus and Buffalo miss out in the East, and that Calgary and Edmonton miss out in the West. From those teams you would want...

Philadelphia: Giroux, Couturier

Carolina: Nope

Toronto: Rielly

Columbus: Murray, maybe Jenner

Buffalo: O'Reilly, maybe Ennis

Calgary: Brodie, Giordano, Monahan

Edmonton: McDavid, Nugent, Hall, Eberle

My guess is that Canada could get each of those players, provided they are healthy, outside of maybe Giroux. Getting defencemen from Calgary would be huge. Canada's biggest weakness at this tournament in the last few years is that the defensive groups have been weak. Getting a guaranteed elite 25 minutes per game from Giordano - Brodie would be massive.

I'm not really splitting up Gio/Brodie. I'm not the coach. but I keep a roster and it is constantly in flux depending on which teams move in and out of PO contention or individual player performance/IR/Righty/leftie + other criteria. It just so happened that on that particular day that is what it looked like. It has changed a few times since then and will change a few more times. I don't like playing fantasy GM or coach, I just roster 23-25 names of the better performing players who will most likely be available come the end of April.

Alright, since I just arrived in the sunny south on my annual winter escape from the frozen North, and feeling somewhat optimistic...taking a glance at the NHL standings and who will be available after Rd. 1 of the POs, I decided to update my overly optimistic roster for St.Petersburg/Moscow.

I am pretty confident in this year's roster. There is quite a big chance that we get players like Duchene, Nugent-Hopkins, McDavid, Monahan, MacKinnon, and defensemen like Brodie, Giordano, Barrie, or Rielly. That's a very good start. :)

It's the WHC and sometimes beggars can't be choosers. and I don't dislike the player, but coming off injury, I'd like to see him perform considerably better over the 2nd half of the season, otherwise I'd take a pass and hope there are better options available on RW come May. Mark Stone would be a better option, but he's not playing all that well at the moment either. Sometimes we just got to take what's available.

Oh come on

Brendan Gallagher Is the heart of the montreal canadiens (after price)

He is a true competitor he is not "beggars can't be choosers" kind of a player

Watch as he will be considerd for the world cup team if he does well at the whc

It will be a repeat of 2014 WHC final with Russia's A-team against Finland's C-team. Hopefully they don't have to cheat to pull it off.
