Never was the wrong word. Couldn't replicate after '06 is what I should have said.

Yeah, I get you.

That said, the '10 Blackhawks forwards say hello.

"Says Hello?" I didn't expect you to use a phrase like that Joe.

To elaborate though, I didn't say the 05/06 Canes WERE the deepest, I said "may have been one of the deepest". I realize it's a different era of scoring, but that Canes team had seven 50 point (ok, Cullen had 49) forwards and then added Weight (57 points on the season) and Recchi (64 points on the season) at the deadline. It had 4 30+ goal scorers plus Recchi (28 on the season), Stillman (21), Cullen (25), and Whitney (17 in 63 games).

Oh I know, they were really deep. I think I posed the question if that team had the most 1,000 point scorers of any team other than the Oilers. That's when I thought EStaal getting to that # was a foregone conclusion.

As much as I despise Pittsburgh, watching Washington fail yet again is magical.

Truth.

I don't hate Washington, but I also don't like them. They are pretty much our geographical rivals. Even though Atlanta was in our division for 12 years and is culturally more "in-tune" with Raleigh (DC I think is more like Philadelphia and NYC than Charlotte, Raleigh, or Atlanta), DC is closer to Raleigh than Atlanta is. Plus we just could never get anything going with Atlanta, it was always Florida and their diving accusations while Atlanta just never set anything off with us. I wouldn't hate it if they won the cup, but seeing as how they always fold in the first or second round, I'm happy to see that trend continue.

Plus, I'm still kind of bitter about 2008.

I honestly think our forward depth was deeper then that Hawks team.

That Hawks team was ridiculous though.

I know the lines weren't always the same, but by the end of the season/playoffs, with Cole out, didn't we have something like?

Staal with Stillman, Recchi
Brindy with Williams, Ladd
Weight with Whitney, Cullen
Adams with Adams, Larose
Vasicek as the 13th forward

It's amazing that they traded Vrbata early in the season who was about a 40 point player that year also. I think the other key thing is that most of those key guys had a "bad" season so they were hitting on all cylinders.

OT, but have we really had any serious rivalries in our history? The only I can think of is our mini one with buffalo, but that had more to do with fans of the respective teams hating each other more than the players, and even that one seems pretty much dead at this point.

Back on topic, I thought this was the year that the caps finally made it past the second round. Either way, my gut says tampa will beat the penguins. But considering how bad my predictions have been this year for playoffs, I wouldn't take it to the bank.

Not really, just "steamings" for lack of a better term. Almost had a mini rivalry with Boston brewing about 5 years ago when we swept them and going back to the '09 playoffs. We've had some good battles with Washington over the years but we never had a Crosby to play against Ovechkin.

It seems most of our "rivalries" are indeed with fans moreso than actual teams themselves. I still can't believe how many Montreal, Edmonton, and Buffalo fans hate us for 2006 like that was their year, especially Montreal fans who seem convinced that Saku Kovius secondary assists were a lock to win the Conn Smythe . IMO the only team than can actually claim that would be New Jersey, who we also beat, and yet Devil fans seem more numb than bitter about that series.

Not really. NJ has probably been the closest as it was a bit of a two way street. They knocked us off a few times, Stevens knocked a few of our players out, and more recently, we've knocked them off a few times.

It's hard to develop a rivalry when you don't make the playoffs.

It's funny as the only team we ever had a TRUE rivalry with, IMHO, was New Jersey, and 1 - we always fell well behind the Rangers (and usually the Flyers as well) in their pecking order and 2 - it's typically been a rivalry of respect fan wise aside from a few real hotheads... usually on their end. When it came to Buffalo there was absolutely no respect there between the fanbases after the way they acted here during our series.

We had an opportunity with Atlanta I think, but they could never put together a competitive team except for 2007. God what a ****ing incompetent ownership group they had.

Patrick Eaves has one of the most impressive playoff beards. Didn't know he had that in him

This is why I get so annoyed when people on the main board will be like "that was a weak Cup roster." BS. That team was so stacked they traded for freaking Doug Weight and had to play him at wing half the time because all the center spots were taken.

As far as JR building a team around forward depth I'd say he took the same approach with the 08-09 team.

Staal
Brindy
Williams (later traded for Cole, in a roundabout way IIRC)
Samsonov
Ruutu
Cullen
Jokinen
Sutter
Walker
LaRose
Eaves

not approaching the greatness of the 06 lineup, but still a pretty deep and balanced group.

As far as rivalries the Devils are the only team that ever really registered with me. To me the 01 playoff series probably went a long way towards putting the team on the map in Raleigh, you had Stevens knocking out RF and Shane Willis with that elbow of his, then coming back from a 3-0 deficit to make a series of it. That last game was unforgettable to me. Team got a full two-minute standing ovation in a 5-1 loss.

Beating that team in the 02 series was sooooo satisfying, then the 06 team just mopped the floor with them. And the next time we saw them was 09 with all the ridiculous dramatic finishes and I almost started to feel sorry for them. Devils fans have to feel like there's some kind of hex or voodoo curse on them when it comes to playing Carolina.

If EStaal reaches 1000 points the '06 team will have had 5 1,000 point scorers in the roster. I believe only the Oilers dynasty teams and the '02 Red Wings had more.

Just wait until they aren't bottom dwellers. It'll be worse.
