Dammit, Dean!

If he's already come out and said that trading away 1st round picks is no longer an option, then he has to be prepared to offer maximum term for the big name players. If he can do neither, then this team will never get better, only worse.

He's already traded away a bunch of 1st rounders, which everyone rips him for. He's got Brown taking up $6m on the cap, he's got Gaborik taking up $5m, he's got Toffoli and Pearson to sign.

I don't know why everyone is going to mopey town already. All DL did was:

1. Not bite on a ridiculous contract

2. make a depth signing

I don't see how this signing is anything but just creating healthy competition in camp. The organization has said multiple times it's looking for it's youth to prove their value and move into open spots. Anyone who thought we were really going after a big fish in FA was just fooling themselves.

The reality of the situation is that we, at this time yesterday, had 5 left handed d men and 2 Right handed d men. The pool for RH D men is ridiculously low in the NHL right now. This is simply to address our RH depth, and nothing more. Low Risk.

Well, there were many on here expecting DL to somehow sign a top flight LW for Kopitar even though it isn't really possible with the cap. Only guy he had a chance of signing was Lucic who would of had to take a market discount...hard for a guy to do that when the organization is clearly not trending up. As I've said previously, writing was on the wall once they blew the division and then got trounced in the playoffs. Why give major concessions if you are Lucic?

So Mopeytown is in full effect because this team is worse than last year with really no hope in sight to replace Lucic while the prospect pool is nearly devoid of top-flight talent, at least projected talent.

Said a long time ago that this year will be all about the youth sinking or swimming. Best case scenario is they (youth) figure it all out at some point of the year and the elite players on this team crush it.

Missing the playoffs is definitely in the cards though. But hey, we should be used to that now :sarcasm:

Maybe Connelly or Grabner up front? Im grasping at straws, still not sure how this team will be better next season.

I should've taken my own advice about having lowered expectations. I didn't think they'd have to be this low...

What's this Trotman kids deal?

I may be in the minority but I really like the Trotman signing. Good RHD prospect depth, fills a gap between Ladue and...LOL Doughty.

Last pick of the 2010 draft. Improved on all fronts, now is a legit prospect to crack the NHL, at least as a bottom pairing guy. Nothing flashy. Allegedly drafted as defensive guy but is chipping in some offense too.

Probably a tweener when all is said and done, but young, big, pretty smart. Could do a lot worse, and it's a free prospect/asset, so.

It's better than the Gilbert signing

Agreed

Buuuut FWIW they're probably hoping Gilbert can recapture #4 form, he WAS coming off a big knee injury last year before getting hurt again, so while he's an injury risk and probable injury burnout, he's basically this year's Ehrhoff--depth with a chance for upside. BUt he's less braindead than Ehrhoff became, at least so far!

Everyone wanted DL to be frugal WRT the cap, these are two exemplary signings in the face of lots of madness today. Doesn' t necessarily solve our bigger problems with certainty of course but they're cheap shots at them and I still expect some tweaking this summer especially with so many defensive prospects.

Zatkoff is solid signing for that cap hit. Been good ever since leaving LA for Pittsburgh, and was doing good as a backup for the first time this year until Murray broke out
