I ran 15:30 (5 minute miles) for 5k (career best) and weighed 135 pounds when I did it. I ran 70-80 miles a week. Ain't no way these guys are gonna touch 5 minute miles. Just went to Lancaster CC meet this morning probably close to 500 boys running and the fastest time of the day was 15:42 (slightly over 5). Heck the top middle schoolers in central Ohio are barely under 12 minutes for 2 miles.

maybe just me, but slight difference b/t needing to get fitness for playing 90 min straight vs 35 second shifts every couple minutes...plus commercial breaks...

but personally I know I couldn't do 2 miles in 12 minutes...maybe 1 in my current state

HS soccer players don't have to play 90 minutes with only halftime for a break. HS games are 80 minutes long with very liberal substitution rules (virtually unlimited).

HS soccer is still more of an endurance sport than ice hockey, however.

Larsen to be HC for away game, Madden for home game.

Needless to say, it will likely be a younger group at NWA than in St. Louis (expected the opposite myself).

No word on how assistants will be split up (or if it will be the full Monsters crew in C-Bus and full Jackets assistant staff in STL).

If Prout can improve his skating and agility.......that would be nice.

Caught a couple hours of training camp this afternoon. Prout and Yevenko, the big guys, seemed to be the most winded by the sprints at the end of practice. Not that that should be much of a surprise, but both were doubled over for the second half of the sprints.

The end of practice went something like this: There were 6 people on each side of the ice. All sprinted separately except the last couple went in a pair - so essentially 1 person sprinting from each side while 4 rested. When the sprinter got back to his side of the ice, the next person went, etc. Relay style.

Down and back
Far blue line and back
Center ice and back
near blue line and back
Far blue line, near blue line, then to the other side
near blue line and back
center ice and back
far blue line and back
*Torts taps his stick on the ice for 15 seconds*
down and back twice
down and back

This was after 40 minutes of 2 on 0, and 3 on 0, and 2 on 1 drills. Pace was very high.

I think most guys don't have professional contracts (planning to head back to Jr or college). Thiessen I think has an AHL contract. Forsberg has one year left on a two-way contract.

That list represents a mixed bag. The CBJ are only permitted to have 50 professional contracts in place at any one time. They currently have 47. Certain exceptions are permitted.

The only player on that list that is currently one of the 47 is Forsberg. He is going into the final year of his 3-year entry level contract. It is a two-way contract that allows him to play in the AHL or the NHL, and pays varying money depending upon where he is playing.

NHL teams can hold the rights of a player for two years after they are drafted before they must tender them a contract. Guys like Abramov (drafted June 2016) fit that category. If they do not agree to a contract they go back in the draft. It is 4 years or upon leaving college for a US college player.

Guys like Brodeur are in camp as a training camp invitee (FA). The two years after they have been drafted originally (NJ for him) has passed and he was not re-drafted. They can be signed by any team at any time.

When you list the possibilities as PTO, ATO, AHL, there are a couple ways that could fit. If a prospect is too old for junior he can play AHL, ECHL, etc. but those are Pro leagues. He would have to have a contract. That could be an NHL two-way contract (Forsberg), or it could be an AHL only contract where no NHL team owns your rights (not part of the 50 limit). Steve Eminger for the Monsters last year would fit in that category.

Both are really good about looking up factual matters about teams/players. (although some discussions are "facts be dammed" affairs).

In order they are:

AHL contract? Thiessen is the one I don't know. He's been around so I assume he's under contract already.

I could be wrong, but I don't there is any meaningful difference for the team's sake between ATO and PTO invites. If they like a player they are free to sign him to whatever level of contract they want, regardless of the try-out agreement.

Thought he said in a Dogpatch interview that he was going to start making cuts tomorrow before the game.

*Edit*

Side dishes
--- Tortorella plans to make his first round of cuts Thursday prior to the exhibition game against Nashville. The club is off Friday and the coach wants to thin the roster to between 35 and 40 players when it resumes practice on Saturday. The Jackets opened camp with 66 players, including those competing at the World Cup.
