Just take the best players. Age shouldn't be a factor. Experience helps, but even then in some cases an 18 year old may be more experienced than a 19 year old.
If the talent level is close then I think you take the older player. Especially if he's built big, the '97s are much stronger than the '96s overall but a team full of 18 year olds can cause problems in my opinion. The Russians have always been a dangerous team and they bring in a full team of 19 year olds, I think having the skill of 18 year olds and the grit, strength of the 19 year olds is a good mix. It's 19 year olds with skill not just grit either. Guys like McCann, Lemieux, Point, Hawryluk who have put up a lot of points in the CHL and also play a style of game that gives opponents problems. Players who pressure the puck and can skate.

Sure, but the problem is that the talent level isn't always close. We've seen too many examples of players not making the team due to their age (or draft status) and little else. Picking an arbitrary number like 5-6 18 year olds indicates that talent isn't even being considered from year to year.

A lot of '96s. The defence looks pretty deep and mobile, I think Sanheim, Fleury, Hicketts are the locks on defence. Two of Dunn, Dermott, Carrier, Juulsen would be great #6-7 defencemen IMO. Mobile, two-way defenders. I think it might a surprise to some that there is no Chychurn but the '96/'97 group are fairly deep.

He hasn't played U18 yet. He's on the camp roster for Hlinka.

Yeah, I know HC usually has all the prospects go through the program of excellence phases of U17, U18, and U20. But if he is a legitimate player to play for the U20 team and better than anybody else on the U18 roster shouldn't he play with the U20 players? :dunno:

Yeah, maybe they'll take the high road and pull a Tyler Myers!

If you mean the Tyler Myers from his rookie year, and hopefully the one who's looked good in Winnipeg, then yes. ;)

Because Hockey Canada and USAH officials sat in a backroom and agreed that we'd take the Hlinka tournament (A team = win) and USAH can have the IIHF April U18 tournament. The CHL cooperates for the U20 tournament, and in turn Hockey Canada doesn't put any stress on the CHL and its schedule for player availability in April. Whoever is available is available.

Not being invited to the summer camp doesn't rule him out for the real camp later in the season. He's definitely a lock for the subway series.

Yeah, I know but I guess they want him in the U18 Hlinka team instead of at the U20 camp.

Hlinka > U-20 camp in terms of importance.

As far as I can recall, only McDavid and Tavares have never gone through the Hlinka tournament, and thats because both played in the U-18s at age 15, and were immediately available for U-20 selection

Stamkos, Mackinnon, Hall, Duchene etc all played the Glinka and were then invited to the U-20 selection camp

Looking back at team Ontario in the 2013 under 17 challenge and notice that 6 players from that zone area picked for the WJC selection camp this year were not even picked for the under 17 team. Goes to show that players can be missed or is there more to the story. Obviously players can be missed but a national tryout 2 years removed shouldn't miss that many zone players.

Looks like the Islanders drafting was based on who was at the Canadian selection camp. Barzal, Beauvillier and Vande Sompel

Ill be honest, despite all logic, GENERALLY, 18 year olds invited to summer camps end up being good players.

Guys like Gallagher, Hudon, Petan, Barrie, Eakin are all guys who Hockey Canada invited to camps at age 18, but went outside the first round.
