I'm sure he'll play against Switzerland or Denmark, but why would you not stick with Ned as the starter at this point?

I think that unless you have a year when you have a definite starter like Demko or Gibson, you should rotate the goalies, and whoever plays the best starts in the knockout round games.

I think the schedule set up for one to play against Canada and the other to play against Sweden, then you split the next two games, and whoever plays the best through the group stage, you start in the knockout round games. It seems like the coach has made a decision on his starter after one game and he's going to stick with that goalie throughout the tournament. I think thats a bad strategy. Maybe I'm just a biased Ranger fan that wants Halverson to play.

Making a decision based on each player playing one game is a better strategy?

so here is the problem I feared...if something happens and we have trouble scoring and lose a top 6 player to injury or slump, we left home so many skilled guys.

I was upset with the redundant picks of Bjork, Hitchcock, Eansor, and Donato..four players picked for one energy line role isn't smart. DeBrincat goes down and now we are in scramble mode. And now I have to look at either Donato or Bjork in a top 9 role with Connor, Keller, and Roslovic sitting at home, that is crazy. Why they didn't go with an extra skilled player still makes no sense to me regardless of how long Alex is out or how the rest of the tourney plays out...just not smart selection. Yes, one player can make a difference, and having one of the names above would balance this out so much better and allow our 4thliners to stay in that role.

Now to be fair, I thought Donato and Bjork have looked fine out there for the most part..they bring some skill to that 4th line. But as of right now they aren't in the same league as the rest of the top 9 and it will show. I again see absolutely ZERO value for Eansor on this team, he plays okay on the pk, but offers little else to be here.

So we have to hope they figure out someone to gel with Matthews and Tkachuk if DeBrincat is out for a while, or this team might be in trouble.

Now this game was a great game for the US with tons of opportunities and chances. Simply dominated the play and yes the power play helped...but a lack of finish and getting to those rebounds is worrisome. I am pretty confident if they play like this the rest of the way we will make it to the final 4 but I also worry some confidence and lineup issues with Alex out could hurt us.

I don't know why I see anyone saying Milano has been invisible, he was everywhere out there again today. I thought Milano, Matthews, and Schmaltz were excellent again today...just missing some bounces. I thought Dvorack and White went invisible which cant happen but sometimes does when top line guys have to play secondary roles they are not used to.

Dvorack especially needs to step up. This is his time to shine and needs to be much more assertive with his play. This team needs him.

MacInnis also needs to step up as I wouldn't mind seeing them put him with Matthews and Tkachuk with Alex out.

I don't think this team needs to panic, but I am worried as another injury or slump will be backbreaking for a team that left home so much talent. You cant predict injuries but you better damn well be prepared for them.

I also want to see more of Krys. I thought he looked assertive and strong out there when he finally hit the ice. Not a fan of Fortunato, he does nothing for me...try Krys on that second power play unit and see what happens.

Overall the team played pretty damn good. They need to get to those rebounds better and need more of a killer instinct on the power play, but in back to back rough matchups, this team looks like a medal winner. I hope DeBrincat comes back and allows us to have that same top 9, if not we might have difficulties.

Defense and goaltending have been great overall...the two biggest question marks have been answered imo. Now we need to see this scoring team put up some numbers the next 2 games against inferior opponents and get the confidence they need...I better see 12 or more goals the next few games..hahaha.

Was super proud of our boys today. A lucky bouce here and there we win that game no problem. On my phone on my way home from NYC so I can't really type too much atm.

Also does anyone else think Keith Tkachuk looks... uhhh not so great?

I think having a couple energy guys is fine, as long as they have skill as well, for example a guy like Max Jones who should be on the team next year. I don't understand why we elected to bring guys like Eansor, Hitchcock, Danoto, and Bjork.

Eansor doesn't add anything to the team really. I thought Bjork and Danato had a couple good shifts, although I remember Bjork giving the puck away. Those guys played better against Canada IMO.

of the 4 "role" players we brought bjork seems to have the most ability.

After watching him a few times - I find it hard to believe he will make it in the NHL. for a player of his his stature you need two things

1) unreal sickhandling skills and shiftyness - like Gudreau or Patrick Kane

2) or be very hard to play against - like St Louis or Gallagher.

I do not see that. He has very good hocky sense and is fast but not roadrunner speed like Johhny Hockey or Kane.

I do not see hime as a 1st rounder. that is my opnion

I believe Keith has really struggled with concussion issues since retiring. Poor guy.

Hi, guys! What's your take on Matthews so far? I've seen two games and haven't exactly been blown away.

Being a fan of Anaheim, I suspect we'll have a decent shot at him in the upcoming draft.

Ciao!

Although he has not been producing, I actually have been blown away. You can tell he has that "flair" and is a threat every time he touches the puck. Lets not forget he's playing among professionals and not kids in Europe so that might be throwing off chemistry with his line mates as well. I'd argue that his hockey IQ has definitely improved since I saw him live in MTL for the WJ's last year.

Any news on Debrincat injury ? If it's long term I really like Boeser in that spot over Milano. I didn't think Milano Mathews Tkachuk line had as much chemistry. I do see the coaching being the thought process tho as it's very clear Schmaltz and Boeser have massive chemistry from their UND roots.

Good analysis!
Most importantly I agree, nothing to panic about! Beat Canada and dominated Sweden and would have gotten points if not for a poor line change.
Boys still adjusting to new roles.
Moving Milano up will help both the first line and the second line for various reasons
I like how this team is working together!!

Extremely proud. 3 goals against combined against like 2 of the top teams. Alex has been incredible as well as our top 4 D. Centers have take away the middle brilliantly and the PK has been awesome.

Once we get the right line combos and the guys in the right spots on Pp, I think our scoring will come along and I really like our chances.

Until then we r keeping the puck out of our net and to those that know the game, you will always have s chance to be victorious!

If there is a team I would pick to win the Gold this tournament. I am picking Team USA. I like the make up of this team to go all the way.

I agree with both of you.

I think Bjorks been the best of the 4. But the selection process is barbaric sometimes.

Some great players watching this game at home.

Connor might not have been watching too carefully... too busy getting ready for another excellent game for Michigan... winning goal in the 3rd and an assist, up to 12g 12a in 16 games, and easily leading his team in scoring as an NCAA freshman. Too bad he's not a "role player" though so that he could make the USA team.

I would agree that in the short time he's played so far in the tournament he hasn't really had a chance to show what he can do. It's too small of a sample size to draw any conclusions. I admit that my first thought when I saw him a play against Canada was jeez this guy is tiny. I remember seeing Gaudreau for the first time in college and my jaw dropped, didn't happen with DeBrincat but it's far too early to tell. People wrote off Gaudreau and St.Louis but they made it, so you never know. I certainly hope he does well, I love watching small guys defy the traditional "sizeists."

Ive liked his game in this tourney. He's being very patient imo. Last year, I thought Eichel tried to do too much.....the puck was constantly on his stick and our guys watched him for a lot of the tourney. Matthews has been much more patient in letting the game come to him. I suspect you'll see him break out against the weaker teams......he's just goung to be too big and skilled for them to handle.

I dont think you'll be seeing him though....I still think Anaheim is gonna make the playoffs. Now maybe San Jose collapses, with Boston holding their number 1...... :yo:

Yes. We needed that energy so much we needed 4 energy guys. In which 3/4 have been absolutely invisible.

Idk how anyone can select a team and pick 3/4 college guys for that final 4 spots. Even Eansor, who's a CHL guy. Isn't even good in the CHL, and half the time they don't even pick the CHL guys, and this year they do, and they leave Garland at home!

Who's 5x the player anyone on that bottom 4 is. It's just crazy to me. But whatver

Scoring isn't the issue. 4 vs Canada, and probably 10 against the Swiss. They ran into a hot goalie against Sweden. Connor and Garland wouldn't have made a difference. It was just one of those games. Held our sticks tight, pressed, and didn't get breaks. Yes, I would prefer both on the team over any of the bottom 4 and MacInnis.

The team will be fine, lets wait until the medal round before we get carried away.

Will reiterate what I said this morning. I really like this US team. Wilson has got them going today, they have let up on the pedal in the 3rd. But This US squad roster has all the elements to win it all.

The Stud D man in Werenski
Strength down the middle in Matthews and Dvorak
Wingers with size and skill to play it anyway you want.

If they get the goaltending, they should win gold. A lot of people don't like Ron Wilson but I would get a kick seeing him win the gold.
