Some golden Juusela moments today:
-6 secs on the clock, Canada player with the puck behind the net: ''FINLAND IS GOING TO THE SEMIFINAL''
- He calls Puljujärvi Pulju and Nättinen Nätti
- His tone doesn't change at all when the opposition scores
- Every penalty Finland receives is a bad one

Yeah, that particularly stood out for me. Talk about jumping the gun way too early. The puck was behind the net in our d-zone at the moment, and Canada was able to create a decent scoring chance thereafter.

I think this is a positive thing. I hate the pessimism and super-depression that Mertaranta has after Finland gets scored on.

That's your opinion and I respect it. For me personally, I like when commentators compliment the nice plays of the opposition and show even a little bit of enthusiasm. Also the fact that he almost cried when Canada took the lead had me shaking my head in disbelief. Sorry btw for the off topic, from now on I'll comment only on the players of Team Finland.

These have been problem since the game against Russia

- They're losing all the faceoffs
- PK is bad, mmkay
- Defense is bad, mmkay

Sad that the AHL guys can't seem to step up. Kiddie line got three points each again against Canada. Where's Kapanen, Rantanen? This team could've been a gold contender if it played to its potential.

Your team is so fun to watch. I was rooting for you guys against Canada. Hoping for a Finland-USA final, but then I might have to root for a high scoring game with the USA winning since Saarela's a Rangers prospect and Laine's my favorite prospect in this draft. I want them to get points.

Also, please put Saarela on the PK more often. I find his defensive game to be subtle, but efficient. Doesn't he play the PK for Assat?

Anyone else see Zuccarello in Saarela? Pesky little guy with great playmaking ability.

Was screaming so much at Lammikko for shooting straight at the chest of the goalie on a great chance Saarela created for him in the dying minutes.

Vehviläinen is eligible for U-18 right? I wonder what will happen there and will he even be the starting goalie (if his team isn't playing Liiga playoffs). My guess is he will be. Maybe the 12k what ever home crowd was too much for him as he had never experienced that before and Kähkönen handled that better.

Yeah that was funny. I was sure Canada would score after that and Juusela would make himself look like an idiot.

Isn't Saarela much bigger though. Would really require a midget to be compared to Zuccarello.

Juusela doesn't even sound like a commentator, he sounds like a guy who sits in a bar and talks to his buddy and the TV set.

I would rather have that soccer commentator guy that is commentating USA-CZE right now commentating Finland's matches than Juusela. Matti Härkönen seems to be the name.

Maybe Veini just can't handle pressure?
But no, my theory is that Veini is a bit more raw, instinct based, old time goalie. He's closer to Jarmo Myllys in spirit, in high skill/intensity situations he gets found out and caught wanting, in liiga JYP's defence covers for most of his brain farts.
His Liiga stats are also deceptive, good, but behind a quite a good JYP team.

Kähkönen has very good stats as well, not just as good but almost, but Kähkönen has to play behind the worst team in the league. A team that fights for every point like bulldogs - Kähkönen getting those stats behind Blues - think of the numbers as way better than what they should be. For Kähkönen, brainfarts by defenders are commonplace.
Ergo, Kähkönen is the ideal goalie for Finland.

As a Canadian and a supporter of the Avs when the Oilers are out of it, I thought Rantanen was pretty well invisible in this game today. I agree that he will need to step up big time to get you guys past sweden and hopefully beat USA/Russia.

Best of luck. Definitely my team to cheer for now that Canada is out!

Juusela was fine.

Swedish team is scary good. And they have very good goaltending, so we'll see..

Vehviläinen is overager for U18's.

Can't believe he could took those hits and continue his attacks like nothing. It almost looked like the hitter got more damage than he. His physique is amazing for the player his size.

Yeah, him coming along the boards and just shrugging off the Canadian D trying to hit him at the end was amazing.

Yeah that's what I've been thinking too that JYP has made him look better and yes he is rawer individual like you said. If I was Jalonen it would've been a no brainer for me to choose the 19y/o goalie over the 17y/o if it's quite close between them skillwise. I guess it was about the U-18 tournament last year why Vehviläinen got so much trust from Jalonen, but that was just too much trust Jalonen has given him this tournament.

I don't see why a player has to be similar size to be compared to another player style-wise.

Well I understand your point, but for me when a player stands out so uniquely due to his size from the rest the size factor stands out over the playstyle.

I guess the thing that reminds me of Zuccarello in Saarela is that he's below average in size and still plays the game like a big player. He hits, is strong along the boards, and sees the ice rather well. He looks like a third line grinder and to some extent plays that way, but is also very underrated playmaker.

Could scouts have actually been right to prefer Ruusu over Vehviläinen then?

Could scouts have actually been right to prefer Ruusu over Vehviläinen then?

Maybe. Vehviläinen has been really solid before this tournament though. Maybe the home growd pressure was just too much.

Better luck next year.

VV's main issue seems to be his nerves, which isn't exactly uncommon in a young goalie. Many players on this Team Finland are capable of drawing energy from the loud home crowd, but they seem to have had the opposite effect on Vehviläinen. It happens, it's just unfortunate that it took until the 2nd period of the QF for our head coach to realize that.

The team is definitely a mixed bag. Aho, Puljujärvi, Laine, Juolevi and Saarela are all on fire. Those guys are an absolute treat to watch.

Then you have Rantanen, Kapanen and Vehviläinen coming in with great expectations and eventually under-performing. Mikkola and Keskitalo seem to be turning the puck over all the time. The fourth line has been fine, Björkqvist especially has impressed me with his power-game.

I hope Kähkönen gets the start against Sweden. Gotta love his poise and great positioning. He can play the puck effectively too.

Bad breakout passes and defensive turnovers have been killing us, as well as sub-par goaltending and PK. I know Kähkönen should help but I don't know if the other problems can be fixed with this personnel and in such a short time. If we can, I see us playing The US in the final. If not... well Sweden will expose us
