It's mind boggling Finland has all the best goalies every year in every league and games, once they have offensive talent.. goalies sucks first time ever

Sure is. At least we shouldn't have so big scoring problems anymore in few years in men's. I would love to see the entire Pulju-Aho-Laine this year in EHT or some of them in men's World Championships.

Can any of them still play in U-18 btw? I know that Laine and Pulju are 17. Apparently Aho is 18 but born in same year or something. Not sure can you play in that tournament if you are going to turn 18 the same year? Or is the margin that if you are drafted you can't play in that tournament. That would be only Aho that can't play if that's the case.

To me, the choice between Kähkönen and Vehviläinen should not be even close. If a goalie can't handle the basic requirement for this level - as in, catch every shot he sees with 99% accuracy - his ability to pull the occasional game saver won't make up for that fact.

It's a valid point and true but watch Jalonen pick Vehviläinen anyways. This is one of those things stubborn Jalonen just does. One of them being forcing Hintz to play C.

Good luck to the Fins. Don't think you will need it. Not Canada's year.

Hey no jinxing here :). Canada is the favorite etc and Finland is fine with that.

Puljujärvi and Laine can still play at the U18's but I am not sure they will. Tappara and Kärpät are going deep in the playoffs so I think they won't be available.

I think VV will get the start, whether it's due to Jalonen's stubbornness or Kähkönen being injured. I have to say that if he's so badly injured that we can't play him in the QF, then he should either have been left at home or Larmi should've been the backup and Kähkönen the 3rd-string. Considering that VV has only managed to save less than 86% of the shots he's faced so far, I expect that in order to win the game, we need to engage Team Canada in an actual goal-scoring contest and try to win 6-5 or something similar.

My god that team was awful to watch. So much talent yet nothing to show for it. It seemed like the team didn't even have a game plan and the players just came in to play without definite purpose as if it was pond hockey.

God, don't even remind me... That tournament was a Via Dolorosa right from the start all the way to the relegation round. The team was in a constant state of panic.

It was the team with super passive PK? They plan was stand stilled pose front of your goalie

Anyone know why Puljujärvi doesn't have swedish citizenship if he was born in Sweden? Or did he have it initially but turned it down after a few years?

Does he speak swedish?

I think he was just born there to Finnish parents living in Sweden at the time and was raised in Finland. Don't think he even qualifies for Swedish citizenship.

However, I know absolutely nothing about his background so I am not speaking for a fact. It's just not noteworthy these days for a Finnish kid to have born in Sweden while having no other connection to the country.

His family moved to Finland when he was 4 and his parents are Finnish so maybe they just felt like he doesn't need a Swedish citizenship. I very much doubt he knows the language either. Someone probably knows better.

Alright, too bad. Don't the kids learn swedish in finnish schools anymore? From my experience, quite a few finnish people (excluding finnish-swedes) can make them themselves understood and "get around" with their swedish atleast. So I would be surprised if he doesn't speak some of it, especially if his parents have a history of living in Sweden.

Yes we do but most people don't have any motivation to learn Swedish so people end up knowing like three words and nothing else. And he has been a great athlete for his whole life so I doubt he's given school much thought.

It is still compulsory language in schools but I think when others did their homework he was practicing his shot. :sarcasm:

Well he dropped school as soon as it was possible by law and has been professional athlete since age 15. And don't think he had much motivation before it.

Well, he lived in Tornio until he was 13. Many people near the border speak good Swedish. Plus, he lived in Sweden when he was a little kid. So he could speak quite good Swedish. But really, I don't know. This is just guessing.

Rewatching the game vs Czech's and our defense was really good until Saarijärvi got sick. Czechs didn't really have any good scoring opportunities in the first period. One from sloppy line change and two from Siikonen's mistakes. Vehviläinen looked really confident in net too until the Czech's first goal. If they can play like that vs Canada, win is certainly possible.

Some kind of a health update from Jalonen:

Tshekki-ottelu oli Suomelle hankala vatsapöpön vuoksi ohentuneen pakkiosaston takia ja Miska Siikonen joutui tuuraamaan puolustajan tontilla. Jalosen mukaan terveystilanne on kohentumassa.

- Vaikea sanoa.

Finland had many years with very limited alents coming up. Now the recent years, you have had BOUNDS of amazing young players coming through the ranks.

As a Swede, this troubles me!, haha...

Even with less talented teams, you have always been a pain in our *****!

What's your secret and can you please share the wealth?? ;)

I have a friend that was born in Sweden and was even named Jan-Erik. His parents moved to Finland when he was a kid and despite having compulsory swedish in school he speaks like 10 words of swedish (Ja, den glider in, och so vidare) even though half of his relatives are Swedish citizens. Most of the Finns dont really learn how to speak swedish in school.

I read from a magazine that Pulju does not even speak English...

Oh, dont say that. I tend to read aftonbalet's website at work since i want to keep up with the news but i dont want to hear about the results of the previous nights NHL games before i can see them from Game Central.

The Swedish tabloids dont seem to care about the NHL, so thats convenient to me
