Don't get how Lowry was so quick to mix the lines up in the first couple of games, and despite nothing working he stopped doing it when Canada was down in the third today to try and catch lightning in a bottle .. Maybe something to work with for Saturday.

My 2 cents...

* No excuses but the coaching has been awful. No control over this team at all.

* The team looks lost on the big ice. I see a lot of passes miss that would connect on the small ice.

* The team is undisciplined. Players have to know they can't take penalties, yet they do.

* The goaltending has not been good.

* We need a lead. If we fall behind to the Fins, you might as well turn off your TV.

Anyway, unless something big happens, we are dead in the Quarters.

The best part of the 3rd period was the pasta I had for dinner. Kevin likes his chicken spicy!!!

Really? He hasnt been standing out to me. Although, I dont know if its even fair to call anyone Canada's best defenseman

Sanheim and Dermott seem to be the only two capable of making a play. It's pretty sad. Chabot is a great skater, but not as good at distributing the puck or getting shots through as those two.

Sanheim and Dermott are easily the best offensive defensemen on the team, but for some reason the other 4 are played far more, even on the PP. Those two should get the PP time, one on each unit, and the majority of offensive zone draws... instead they get wasted on the defensemen who have little offensive creativity or shots.

Except for when you know, he is, like on the first Canada goal.

3 points, one back of Marner, two back of Strome.

He's been an important contributor at both ends of the ice.

This is what I'm getting fired up about

What is it with our national infatuation with grinders?

Why surround our top forward (Strome) with two grinders? I like Crouse and he shall become a good pro but he simply does not have the skill level to play top-6 minutes in this tournament. Virtanen should be in the bottom-6 as well. WTF.

Am I the only who wishes to see a Konecny-Strome-Gauthier line?

I don't even view Dermott as an offensive specialist, he's a great two way guy in the OHL and was in the training camp games as well. Short, but great mobility and at 207 lbs he's built like a tank, great first pass.

Hard to get a read on how good he is defensively at this level because the coach refuses to use him in those situations. Ditto for Sanheim. But Dermott did practice against McDavid every day for two years, so he certainly has some experience defending high end opponents.

Stats based arguments are pretty irrelevant over such a small sample size, especially considering he gets twice as much ice time as Dermott and Sanheim, and when the difference is a whopping 1 point.

Chabot has easily been one of the better dmen though.

nope

Take note HC, this is a 19 year-olds tournament. I still do think we have the horses to win though, but it's an uphill battle.

Wrong. Bob McKenzie repeating this every year does not make it so. Look at the Finns and Americans.

This team plays pathetically and there is plenty of blame to go around. Lowry's failures have been covered. What I don't understand is this - late in the first and early in the second, Canada started playing physically and started to control the game. This was the first time Canada played this way all tournament, and it's the best they've looked. At some point they just stopped, and proceeded to meekly play out the game. It's mystifying.

On the positive side, very good games by Konecny and Marner. Easily the best two Canadian players. Lowry finds a way to mitigate that though by shortening the bench so that Konecny's line, which was pretty effective, stopped playing completely. Konecny did have a shift further up the lineup, but it was literally only one shift.

Who is the starting goaltender after Blackwood's mediocre performance? I'm hoping for Blackwood, mainly because McDonald's ineptitude has been consistent for months. There is at least a chance that Blackwood is just a bit rusty. McDonald just isn't good this year.

Yeah, I wasn't saying they were only offensive players, I was saying that offensively they were the best two.

But even if Lowry doesn't trust them defensively, he should still be using them where they absolutely are the best on the team, at creating offense from the blueline. He's not doing that and it's hurting the team.

Agreed.

With the amount of ice time that Virtanen and Marner get, their production had been disappointing.

Marner is a top offensive forward prospect and he's leading Chabot by one whopping point.

Surprised that so much complaint is surrounding the defence, even if you disagree how they're being used I think they're the least of the worries. The offence to me seems so mundane, they just aren't generating nearly enough

I can't say I've been impressed with the defense as a whole on their breakout passes, and passes in transition .. Not crisp or accurate enough.

Certainly impacts the forward's ability to get scoring chances off the rush.

I agree with that - altho the D is struggling to move the puck to the forwards.

5 on 5 we're fine. But we can't seem to stay out of the box so...

If/when Canada falls behind against the Fins, I will walk away.

My lines for the rest of the tournament would be

Beauvillier-Strome-Konecny
Gauthier-Point-Marner
Crouse-Stephens-Chartier (shut down line against Finlands top line)
Perlini-Barzal-Virtanen
Quenville
