I don't like the idea of having players that are actually gonna be on the team (Hicketts, Marner, Strome...) sitting in the press box watching while some guys who won't be on the team are playing in these tough CIS games. You already have a shortened timeline to get these guys playing together, why waste it by having them watch on the sidelines.

They should be in this game.

they're gonna have 3 games against other countries in Finland too before the tournament starts, the first goal is picking the best team, you do that by getting the best look at all the borderline players before you make the first cuts, you have to give those players a couple game chances before you tell them to go home, otherwise just as well to cut them before you start.

University hockey interests me. I didn't see the game, but...

How would this CIS team do against:

- Full strength Canadian juniors (not including NHL players) or other WJC teams
- NCAA team (i.e. BU)
- AHL?

I understand that they're older (by 2-3 years), but it still feels strange that a bunch of these guys who I never heard, bar a few, can take on and beat these high profile draft picks and players

UNB, who is one of the top university teams in Canada, has beaten Portland (AHL), Boston College, and Maine this year, and they tied Harvard. All of those games being on the road. They usually do pretty decent against NCAA teams, but they are an exception.

As a whole though, in any given year the NCAA usually wins about 80% or so of their games against CIS.

The only time I can remember a single CIS team playing against a WJC team (outside of these Canadian games) was when Alberta beat Denmark 5-0 and 8-3 in 2011.

Alberta beat the WJC team 4-1 3 years ago.

Yup...I was just trying to think of non-Canada games.

Here is a list of some previous games taken from the CIS thread...

Dec. 14, 2004 at Winnipeg: Manitoba
Manitoba Bisons 4, Team Canada 2

Dec. 15, 2004 at Winnipeg:
Team Canada 6, Manitoba Bisons 3

Dec, 15, 2006 at Calgary:
Calgary/Lethbridge 5, Team Canada 4

Dec. 15, 2009 at Saskatoon:
Sask./Regina 4, Team Canada 2

Dec. 17, 2011 at Calgary:
Team Canada 7, Calgary/Lethbridge 4

Dec. 12, 2012 at Edmonton:
Alberta Golden Bears 4, Team Canada 1

Dec. 13, 2012 at Calgary:
Team Canada 2, Calgary/Lethbridge/MRU 0

So instead of evaluating players, Team Canada should simply dress everyone on reputation and roll with that line-up?

Interesting decision.

On the contrary. Players shouldn't be feeling entitled to a spot. Even if it is Strome, Marner Crouse or whatever. They should be right there with their other teammates fighting for a spot. While the teammates they'll be on the frontline with are fighting for a spot on the team, they're basically watching high above in a deluxe suite. I just think it forms a disconnect between them. Similar to the 2013 WJ Canadian team.

You realize they have to many players to dress for these game? Would you rather them not play the guys that are battling for final spots?? You're argument makes no sense...plus these guys will get pre-tournament games in Finland.

So are you suggesting they dress all 29 players for the game or something?

The players who are fighting for spots need to be out there for both games. Depending on how they feel about guys like Barzal and Beauvillier maybe they could have been taken out to get some other guys a game, similar for Sanheim could have been taken out, but you need to give the guys who are not guaranteed a spot 2 games. As much as you want to suggest Marner, Strome, Point, etc should be out there as if they're not guaranteed a spot, they are and you can't dress 29 players so those guys get the time off, they're be time for them to gel as a team in the other 3 pre-tournament games.

I honestly don't get what they can do differently or exactly what you actually want them to do because dressing 29 players isn't going to happen also this is exactly how they picked the team last year.

I'd rather they make better options other than having the supposed locks of the team watching up in the pressbox like Kings while their teammates are battling for spots on the very same team all of them are trying to make.

I agree with what you've been saying.

and it doesn't mean dressing 29 players, either. Surely not all 12 forwards out there are currently battling for a spot. I'm sure some already have one.
