Christ I didn't say that Arcade Fire created indie rock. I don't think there's much similarity between the Pixies and Arcade Fire, though there certainly seems to be a bit of an influence there, as with practically every indie band after 1990. After Funeral blew up the indie music scene became overwhelmed by bands trying to write big, anthemic, over the top heart on their sleeve songs using lots of instruments and packing stages with too many band members. I think Arcade Fire marked a shift in the indie scene away from Radiohead as the major influence. Maybe it's a coincidence and things were taking a turn anyway, but I don't think so.
When you break down Arcade Fire songs into their individual parts I'm not really sure there's anything new there. More or less trying to imitate Bowie, Springsteen, and Byrne all at the same time. But the way it is all put together was certainly original at the time and the way Funeral was received both by music fans, critics, and other musicians seems to have evidenced that. That album absolutely sent shockwaves through the indie music world.
Of course a lot of the music they have influenced is terrible, but that's par for the course I guess. Just like for every Nirvana that the Pixies spawned, there was a Nickleback and a Linkin Park in there as well.
Funeral is one of the top 5 albums to have been released this century. #fancystats
