I get why some people might not like Arcade Fire, but I don't get how they could be considered "forgettable." For better or worse they basically created the modern indie rock scene. So many bands after have derived their style and sound from them. I think Arcade Fire is one of the best current bands in all of music, though.

Eh, them, Radiohead, The Strokes, The Killers... Whatever.

Broken Social Scene should probably end the Arcade Fire and Rush arguments.

Sorry, indie rock has been around long before Arcade Fire hit the scene. The Pixies, maybe? They won a grammy, sure, but I feel their musical influence is incredibly overstated. I just don't see it.

Christ I didn't say that Arcade Fire created indie rock. I don't think there's much similarity between the Pixies and Arcade Fire, though there certainly seems to be a bit of an influence there, as with practically every indie band after 1990. After Funeral blew up the indie music scene became overwhelmed by bands trying to write big, anthemic, over the top heart on their sleeve songs using lots of instruments and packing stages with too many band members. I think Arcade Fire marked a shift in the indie scene away from Radiohead as the major influence. Maybe it's a coincidence and things were taking a turn anyway, but I don't think so.

When you break down Arcade Fire songs into their individual parts I'm not really sure there's anything new there. More or less trying to imitate Bowie, Springsteen, and Byrne all at the same time. But the way it is all put together was certainly original at the time and the way Funeral was received both by music fans, critics, and other musicians seems to have evidenced that. That album absolutely sent shockwaves through the indie music world.

Of course a lot of the music they have influenced is terrible, but that's par for the course I guess. Just like for every Nirvana that the Pixies spawned, there was a Nickleback and a Linkin Park in there as well.

Funeral is one of the top 5 albums to have been released this century. #fancystats

How in the world are you figuring Radiohead as being a major influence on the "indie scene" at any point in time?? Please define the 90s indie scene just to clear this up a little.

I thought it was a tragedy that Jeremy Gara didn't make the final cut for Team Canada, he definitely deserved a spot over Lazar. Win looked pretty solid on D for USA though, he should be good for the Avalance. Or was that Butcher? Wait, what are we talking about?

Sonic Youth?

Sorry, I don't do indie rock.

But I still say Rush is the only good band from Americas Cap.

That's an absolutely ridiculous statement to say about a country the size of Canada. We have a great music scene here and are constantly producing more and more great artists. We may not have as many Canadians on the radio making top 40 hits but there's a TON of great music here and to say otherwise shows complete ignorance.

Or you're just trying to be funny, maybe. I don't know.

As for the arcade fire, I'm Canadian and I ****ing hate their music. If I could pick one band/artist to have disappear from existence as well as having their entire musical catalog cease to exist it would be them without a doubt.

...Kid A came out in '99. Also, influence lists are kind of a joke. Kid A is/was a token mention because it was relatively experimental as far as guitar rock goes, and it also happened to win a Grammy.

It's kind of like how Carrie Brownstein will mention Kanye or Run the Jewels as an influence if you asked her today. Please, you know Carrie Brownstein doesn't listen to hip-hop.
