I would love to be able to grab Zach Werenski at 7 or 8 with our first pick and then move our two seconds to move up and grab Jansen Harkins in the mid 20s. That would be am incredibly successful draft day in my eyes.

I would be really hesitant to take any D out of the US (outside of Hannifin).

Since 2008, only 6 USHL/USDP defensemen were drafted in the first round:

Trouba
Matheson
Skjej
Murphy
Forbort
Leddy

IMO, unless the player is an absolute stud, you don't take a defensemen in the top 15 of the first round.

Most D take a ton of time to develop, and you never know exactly what you're getting with them, until well into their development.

I personally always liked Jim Rutherford's "you don't usually take a D in the first round unless it's a stud" philosophy

Provorov is the best d after Hanifin imo Giodarno is a comparable. He's also one of the biggest risers of the first round. Havent seen Kylington play because he was injured though.

Going into this year he was a late first now hes a 7-15 pick. Look at Zibby's draft and how many people are probably shooting themselves for not taking d men. We have Landeskog and RNH then a whole bunch of forwards who havent gone as expected.

You can grab skilled forwards in the second round who are closer to nhl ready then a dman drafted into the same spot. We have Hamilton and Brodin who are already top paring dmen from that draft. Top ten is not to low to grab soon to be nhl ready dman.

Definitely. A dman should be a stud and have an offensive game.

Players like Griffin Reinhart should not being going in the top 20.

There's always exceptions to the rule.

But I think if you go back, almost 50% of defencemen taken in the first round, are barely serviceable.

Same thing applies to Cowen then. I remember being pissed that we did not draft the next Peter Forsberg: Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi

Cowen benefited a lot from being in a mans body in a boys league his physical ability was off the chart compared to his peers. He also was coming off injury and then had another injury hurt his development.

The defensemen of around tenth pick. Provorov, kylington and Werenski are all cerebral players who happen to have good physical ability but still nowhere near Cowen's.

Cody Ceci - 15
Jared Cowen - 9
Erik Karlsson - 15
Brian Lee - 9
Andrej Meszaros - 23
Tim Gleason - 23
Anton Volchenkov - 21
Chris Phillips - 1
Bryan Berard - 1

by my consideration, we have made one, maybe two bad DMan picks in the first round - those being Brian Lee (obviously) and Bryan Berard (arguable, and turned into Redden).

I trust the Sens with drafting DMen, even in the first round.

can't you say that about any player? usually the player you take in the 1st rounder is a player you think can be a stud

Maybe in the top half... Leafs are just an example of a team that has recently made a habit of picking decidedly non-stud fwds in the 20-30 slots (Biggs, Gauthier). Biggs was a bad pick, Gauthier I think a pretty good one. You cant always swing for the fences, even in the first round.

If the sens fall in the 9-12 range I could see them snatching Mathew Barzal. He could be the steal of the draft since he has been hurt for much of the year with a knee injury. He has absolutely amazing vision, speed, and hands. He has been compared to Nugent Hopkins and Duchene. What I like about him more is that he studies the game, he watches hours of film, learning what he did well and what he needs to improve upon. He might not be the biggest being around 6'0 175 but he has time to grow, and his style of play doesn't require him to be large to be successful in the NHL.

Ideally the sens finish with a pick in the top 6 to draft one of McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, Marner, Strome, Kylington.

trading two 2nds will probably get you a low 1st by which time konecny will be long gone

konecny has been rated from mid first to high second konecny isnt a good enough scorer ala Marner to make his size not hurt him imo

i think he goes top 15 (like Barzal) we saw what he can do last year and while having a slow start he is getting hot. He should have a hot 2nd half

Has anyone seen this before? Basically just a random "draft lottery" generator, but it apparently keeps up to date with the standings. A fun waste of time.

The game I'm proposing is everyone click on the "Run the Lottery" button until they get the Sens... gives a good idea of how long the odds are of us getting the McDavid pick.

For the record, I had to click it 27 times before we got the pick.

I got sens after 10 clicks
