Four players who stood out at the NHL combine

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/four-players-who-stood-out-at-the-nhl-combine/

top of the list, sitting at #14, is a forward that might be a nice fit

Travis Konecny, C, Ottawa 67’s
Aside from Jack Eichel, no projected first-round skater impressed more than Konecny.

Endurance and power: He wound up in the 90th percentile in both VO2 and Wingate peak power testing. He also managed 16 reps in the body-weight adjusted bench press, fourth overall in the field, tied with Jack Eichel. Konecny’s explosive jumps weren’t quite so impressive but still above average.

Given his work ethic and motor, you’d expect Konecny would be there in the aerobic elite but the other numbers make you sit up and take notice. He already climbed from 26th at the mid-term to 14th in the final Central Scouting rankings of North American skaters, so don’t expect him to be jumping anyone on his performance at the combine.

the other 3

Mackenzie Blackwood, G, Barrie Colts

Jesse Gabrielle, LW, Regina Pats (projected 3rd round)

Karch Bachman, LW, Culver Academy (87th in N. America)

Konecny has the heart that's for sure. But he is so small compared to the others. His write up reminds me a little about Hickey. Big heart, captain material.

I really hope Konecny breaks into the NHL. Everything I read about him, I love.

I know he's small but his vision and hands are magic.

Curious what you guys would think of the Kings taking Mackenzie Blackwood in the 2nd?

I think I'd prefer for them to wait until the 3rd or later rounds to find a goalie. Seems like they've done pretty well in those areas when it comes to selecting goalies. The last goalie they selected in the 2nd round (Christopher Gibson) turned out to be a bust.

Zatkoff was a 3rd rounder, Berube went in the 4th, and Bartosak and Dillon were 5th round selections.

Plus I think Dillon is the prime goalie prospect in the system given his size and performance this past season in the USHL.

Mentioned this earlier in the thread, but Yannetti said the Kings were planning on drafting Connor Hellebuyck in the 5th round in 2012 as well. Dillon slipped my mind, so that could definitely make goalie less of a priority.

I'd like it. We could use a highly regarded goalie in the system to keep pushing and challenging everyone. I don't think Berube is a future NHL starter, Bartosak is still raw and a couple of years off too, and the other kids are all a few years off for various reasons. Depends on who is still available there, the late first and early to mid second rounds are a mess in every mock!

I do think we pick a goalie at some point in this draft though.

Bummer, but I'm pretty high on Colin Miller, so all is well.

Alec Dillon was Kings prospect of the year according to The Hockey News. Seems like a little bit of a reach but what do I know.

Not if our scout was the one who thought he bombed the interview. That was a bit worrying.

Mehh, the last goalie the Kings got in the 1st round was Jonathan Bernier and he's done pretty good while none of Zatkoff, Berube, Bartosak or Dillon has done anything at the NHL level.

I think you rank your players and just take BPA, regardless of if its round one and a goalie or round six and a forward.

How can any goalie do anything at the NHL level when they are behind Quicky?

Because Quicky is 29 and any goalie we selected will take likely four years to even be a NHL backup and six years to be a full-time starter. Who knows where Quicky is at 33 or 35. He could be a top level netminder still, or he could be regressing. Additionally, if you buy into the theory that our 'window' will be closed by then, we could deal Quick if we have a competent netminder in the fold behind him.

Also nothing wrong with having a solid up-and-coming backup that you can deal later too. See, replacing Bernier with Jones, only to see JOnes/Scrivens get significant playing time. What if we had Berube behind Quick and Quickie went down with a season-ending injury? Can have a vet backup, which is nice, but also nice to have a cheap, young guy with loads of potential that you can parlay into more assets if Quick just keeps being Quick.

As bummed as I am about missing the playoffs it's kinda fun to be excited for the draft again. Last three seasons the draft felt like an afterthought and I did not read up on any prospects beforehand. Now I'm reading all kinds of articles and scouting reports. Summer is gonna be long and miserable though, ugh.

I hope that LA does not take a goalie with the 2nd round pick. Would rather take a gamble on a positional player.

if it's blackwood would rather take the 2nd best player available.
after the 2nd round have no issue drafting a goalie.

BPA.

Statistically speaking, the majority of goaltenders holding down either a starting or backup role in the NHL come out of the top two rounds.

Expect for the Kings with their starter from a 3rd round pick and a undrafted free agent as a backup.

If the Kings draft a goalie, I'd hope they wait until 3rd round or later. The Kings need more depth outside of the crease that will be ready way before any goalie drafted this year. Goalies are not a need right now.

It's rather revealing to see that there are just about as many undrafted goalies in the NHL as there are goalies drafted in the 1st round (and a little more than drafted in the 2nd round).
