GDT: 2015 Draft Day - Los Angeles Kings

Perhaps, though I doubt it. Can't see him having much ground to stand on to demand anything above about $1 million and you'll need to spend about that much to replace him anyways.

He/his agent did it before. Took until September to get a contract done, with even less ground to stand on.

The problem with the Kings backup goalie situation is that Quick already takes up almost $6 million on the cap. How much more can you invest in a position where only 1 guy plays at a time? Scrivens made close to the minimum when he was brought in. Jones made close to the minimum when Scrivens was traded. Berube or Bartosak would make the minimum.

Yes, if Quick gets hurt, the Kings have a few issues. In a cap world, after winning as much as the Kings have, it's difficult to cover every base. That's not to say Jones won't sign by the end of today for all anyone knows, but like Bernier, he may be a luxury the Kings can't afford.

They're trying to pull off a significant deal. He could be one of the assets. Nothing imminent Dennis Bernstein added,

@DennisTFP Do you see Deano trading Jones tonight during draft?

Jones ' contract called for a league minimum salary in each of the last three seasons. So how successful do you think he was waiting until September? Think he goes for it again? Maybe he's holding his breath that he's the goalie that breaks a nearly 20 year trend of not offer sheeting goalies, all the power to him I guess.

Bernier had arbitration rights. I don't believe Jones does if I'm not mistaken, and that played a bigger part in Bernier getting dealt. LA can get Jones signed for under $1 million a year I figure and if they can't afford that then we are in a world of hurt.

I don't think Salary is an issue with Jones. Jones probably truly believes he is ready to start in the NHL, probably asked the Kings to explore the option of trading him.

Jones would probably like to be on a team that he has at least a fighting chance to be named the number one. That's not an option for Jones in LA.

Jones does have arbitration rights this year. For a player signing at 18 years old like he did he needs 4 years professional experience. He now has 5. So he can take them to arbitration. He won't get much in arbitration though.

Also of note IIRC waiting until September was successful for Jones as the sticking point was a one-way deal not the value of the contract signed. I think he could have signed a higher AAV deal earlier but chose to wait until LA would give him a one-way. I might be wrong on that though.

Like damacles says I think it's playing time for Jones. Once you start getting to that 26/27 age and you've never been given a chance to be a starter it gets harder and harder to get that opportunity.

Maybe getting an extra year on his contract last time pushed up the guaranteed money he got. That would've worked out well for him if that were the case.

Bernier asked Lombardi to trade him a year before he ended up doing it. He wanted out because he wanted to play. Every goalie does, but every goalie can't.

It's not that the Kings can't afford Jones, it's that there are other needs. Every dollar counts. If added to that is Jones wanting to have a shot at being the #1 guy, then that just makes it more complicated. It's either play him more often, or give him more money. Quick gets paid a lot to play a lot, and the Kings have other things they need to do with the roster.

There isn't a big need for Lucic on this team when some of our bigger problems have not been solved. And I really hate Lucic. A crybaby loser like Backes and Doan. It would be a very interesting move.

Feels like we're discussing the same things in this thread, the "roster speculation" and the "around the league" ones. Could the mods maybe drive the discussion towards one thread? I don't know where to go :)

Bruins probably shooting for number 3 overall.

Take Noah Hanifin. Once Arizona lost out on 1/2 they have seemed destined to trade that number three pick.

A first and 2 2nds?!? Well, and a huge salary. But still.

Edmonton should have gotten in on that. Calgary whooped them there

Boston is gunning for Hanifin. They tried to get the 3rd overall pick this morning for Hamilton and that didn't work. Now they have 2 1st round picks that they can trade to Arizona. Hanifin played for Boston College and he's from the Boston area. It makes too much sense.

Also not sure how I feel about Lucic.

This this this. Maybe keep it all in the draft thread.
