Mayor has the name, and I think he'll have an article on it soon.

i still think they wanted Zacha and when NJ took him it blew up. Dean has to be looking for his next #1C already. Kopi's isn't getting younger and then there is the entire UFA/salary cap hanging out there next summer.

Except the Kings dealt the #13 and decided not to move up before the draft.

The Kings were set to move up into the top 10, and pick up another 1st round pick and went to Boston about their pick and that's how the whole Lucic deal started. Lucic solidifies the top 6, maybe even the top 9 if Shore can hold down the 3rd center spot, which I believe he will.

They planned for the last two weeks to move up. Lucic becomes available and everything changed.

The implication was that things changed when the Devils took Zacha. The Kings dealt the pick before Zacha was drafted, so the pick was not what caused it to blow up.

At least that's how I interpreted it.

it very well may have gone down that way KP

my take is that DL and crew wanted Zacha and knew they had to move up to get him. they just couldn't do it on their terms and went to plan B, which worked out to be the Lucic deal.

either scenario could have happened, will have to wait and see if it ever comes out. perhaps Dean only saw a particular player from 5-13 that was worth the value of Lucic for one season and a Cup run.

i say Zacha simply because it is the obvious, Dean has to be looking for his next #1C that at some point will succeed Kopitar. whether that is 5 years from now or in a year (god forbid).

If Dean traded up and drafted a #1C I can't even imagine the posts on here.

"He's basically telling us that he won't re-sign Kopitar!!!!!"

It would be ugly.

Don´t know if this has been posted but our top two picks were drafted in the CHL import draft:

40. Shawinigan Cataractes: Alexander Dergachyov, C, SKA-1946 St. Petersburg (MHL)

54. Erie Otters: Erik Cernak, D, HC Kosice (Slovakia)

My impression from Dean's conference call and Yannetti's and Blake's video interviews and John Hoven's radio interview was that they had planned to try to move up until they found out Thursday night that Lucic was now available. I think that if he hadn't been available, they would have proceeded with the plan of getting a pick in the 7-10 range.

Though interestingly, there were a couple trends the Kings did break:
- Cernak is the first Slovakian born player Lombardi has drafted since joining the Kings
- This is the first year the Kings didn't draft a player who participated in the Top Prospects game.

I imagine there are several teams that haven't drafted a Slovakian player in several years, not stunning. I also imagine it wasn't desired to not get any of the guys from the Top prospects Game as those are the best and brightest of the draft year quite often.

Not stunning, but it's also a bit surprising when a player does get drafted. A top 8 nation not getting drafted in 9 years under the tenure of one GM is a bit interesting. Similarly, yes, getting the top prospects each year is pretty common, but not drafting from there at all is equally interesting.

These are two relatively common things you can count on that didn't happen this year.

Slovakian hockey is in the toilet right now.

Look back about 12 years ago.

Ziggy Palffy, Marian Hossa, Marian Gaborik, Pavol Demitra, Jozef Stumpel, Peter Bondra, Zdeno Chara, Lubomir Visovsky, Miroslav Satan were all high end players at minimum.
